Salary cap set, LeBron cashes in

Cavaliers star to earn about $43 million in next three seasons

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - LeBron James' paycheck is now set, and it's big.
The NBA finalized its salary cap for the 2007-08 season on Tuesday, upping it about $2 million from last year to $55.63 million.
Last summer, James signed a three-year maximum contract extension, which now kicks in with the start of the new NBA fiscal year. The value of the deal was not certain until the league set the new cap.
The numbers show James will earn about $43 million in the next three years, starting with a salary of about $13 million this season with annual raises of about $1.4 million each year.
James has an option for the 2010-11 season that is worth roughly $17 million.

CAVALIERS BRIEF

Moves raise chance
of signing Varejao
The likelihood of free agent forward Anderson Varejao returning to the Cavaliers increased dramatically with several events around the NBA on Wednesday.
The Orlando Magic got Rashard Lewis for six years and $110 million in a sign-and-trade deal with the Seattle SuperSonics. But the Magic were unable to create enough salary-cap space to keep promising big man Darko Milicic and renounced his rights to complete the deal. Several media outlets then reported that Milicic quickly reached a long-term deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hopefully they can get Varejao to sign to something similar to what Gooden got, although I would like to see it be a longer deal than 3 years. It's good nobody has the type of money to spend as the earlier rumors stated. Worst case senario is that Varejao gets pissed off and takes the one year deal to be a FA next year, but it seems like he would be dumb to turn down 18-24 million for 3-4 years hoping to cash in next year.

Cavaliers' point guard crusade resumes

Mike Bibby target again with Gooden and Jones as potential trade bait

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Cavaliers' pursuit of a point guard has heated up again.
According to multiple league executives, the Cavs and Sacramento Kings have restarted talks to bring Mike Bibby to Cleveland. The two teams nearly completed a deal shortly before February's trading deadline and have been in discussions again over the past several days.
A version of the deal was close to happening Thursday, sources said, in a three-way move with the San Antonio Spurs.
The Cavs were believed to be after the rights to Argentine center Luis Scola as well, which the Spurs own. When the talks broke down, the Spurs dealt Scola and reserve forward Jackie Butler to the Houston Rockets.

TALKIN' CAVS
Varejao likely to be back for lack of other offers
? It might take a while. In fact, it probably will, but Anderson Varejao seems headed back to the Cavaliers. It's just like the situation with Drew Gooden a year ago. He is a restricted free agent, meaning the Cavs can match any offer he receives. Gooden waited and waited, and in the end, he signed a three-year deal with the Cavs because he had no other choice. Other teams knew the Cavs would not allow Gooden to walk away. Same with Varejao.
? Here's how to view Varejao -- he's a super sub as a big man. A key to the Cavs' success has been having four big men who do different things. Zydrunas Ilgauskas can score and block some shots. Drew Gooden is the most athletic of the big men in terms of rebounding, shooting and inside scoring. Donyell Marshall's shooting fell off, but the Cavs still like him as a part-time player. Varejao draws charges, rebounds, brings energy and is learning how to score inside.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Shannon Brown scores minutes in the NBA summer league

Sunday, July 15, 2007 Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Shannon Brown, not Daniel "Boobie" Gibson, spent his rookie year on the bench this past season. It was Brown, not Gibson, who was the Cavaliers' No. 1 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
It was 2006 second-round pick Gibson, not Brown, who was the star in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to lead the Cavs to the first NBA Finals in franchise history.
Brown insists he had nothing to prove during the Las Vegas Summer League that ended for the Cavs on Saturday night. But it was Brown, not Gibson, who was leading the Cavs' summer league team in scoring at 18 points per game before Saturday.

At this point, I'm less than optimistic for next season.

I'm only slightly worried about our frontcourt, but other than that, I see no reason why we won't be a top two team in the East. Gibson will be a year older, Shannon Brown should be healthy. Lebron hopefully will be pissed about the Finals.

We still need to resign Varejao and Pavlovic, but this offseason went about as well as it could have. There weren't any elite free agents, and it's ridiculously hard to trade for superstars in the league.

You can't make moves in a buyer's market, which is what the NBA is right now. No one is going to just give up players to the Cavs simply because we need them. For the most part, free agency is where big deals are done, and the Cavs won't have enough cap space to do anything significant for two years.

Until then, our core should be enough to keep us elite, as long as we augment our talent with good free agent signings(i.e. no more Damon Jones or Eric Snow type contracts).

Cavs will prob be a 3-4 seed next year and try and turn the light switch on down the stretch....i doubt booby lives up to the hype next year, i like sasha but je isn't a legit 2, and z keeps getting older

This managemnt is fooling themselves if they think this team is loaded enough to just repeat.....i'm happy with the run from last year, but everyone will be complaining come early exit time next season
