Sounds like Luke Jackson is looking really good and Hughes is playing some PG. A lineup of Hughes, Jackson, James, Gooden/Marshall, and Z is sounding pretty good.

Cavs get defensive again, win

Jackson slows Pierce in victory over Celtics

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sports writer

PITTSBURGH - Even in the context of the preseason, the Cavaliers played a game devoid of much excitement Tuesday.

Absent was the usual highlight-maker, LeBron James, who sat out with a mild chest strain.

Besides, with the Cavs playing the second night of a back-to-back and the Boston Celtics playing their first preseason game, it wasn't an evening of heroics.

That didn't stop Cavs coach Mike Brown's pulse from quickening because his still-budding team continues to follow his defensive lead. More effort and teamwork on the defensive end allowed the Cavs to win for the second consecutive night, beating the Celtics 96-86 in front of 8,122 fans at Mellon Arena.

After falling behind 17-2, not unlike the dizzying first quarter Monday in Washington when the Cavs also trailed by as many as 15 points, they gathered themselves, tightened the screws around their basket and steadily pulled out to a comfortable lead.

They held Boston scoreless for a seven-minute stretch in the first half and allowed the Celtics to shoot just 40 percent for the game. It was the same recipe as the night before and all last week in practice -- intense defense with plenty of rotation and and backside help.

``I don't care if we win or lose,'' Brown said. ``The things I look at are effort, help, communication and trust on the defensive end of the floor.''

The center of Brown's adoration was second-year swingman Luke Jackson. Getting the start for James, Jackson was assigned to cover Celtics' star Paul Pierce. It wasn't pretty early, with Pierce getting the best of Jackson with several moves as he put up nine points in the first quarter.

But Jackson settled down and allowed his teammates to come to his aid and gave up just nine more points to Pierce the rest of the night. It was still a game-high 18, but cooling Pierce allowed the Cavs to mount a comeback and take over.

``My hat's off to Luke,'' Brown said. ``It was great he stepped up to the challenge. Paul handed him his rear end in the first half and I thought he came back and tried to do the things we're talking about and relied on his team to help him.''

Jackson also scored 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, had a pair of steals and a pair of blocks in the win. He scored 12 points and made a couple threes in the preseason opener on Monday.

``That was a challenge,'' Jackson said. ``(Pierce) is an All-Star. Starting my first game it was exciting. I just tried to approach it like any other game.''

As for James, he strained the muscle during Monday's victory and felt some pain during warm-ups on Tuesday. It being just a preseason game, team doctors suggested he take the night off. He's expected to be out on the practice floor for a light workout in Cleveland this morning.

In a way, winning without James was a little boost.

``There will be days when key guys aren't in so we have to be prepared for the situation,'' said Larry Hughes, who had seven points and three assists. ``We're focusing on not taking any nights off, not taking any plays off.''

Damon Jones drew the start at point guard and played well, picking up five assists and two steals with no turnovers. He went just 2-of-8 on 3-pointers and scored six points.

Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas each turned in solid performances with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Donyell Marshall came off the bench and was impressive, making 3-of-6 3-pointers and scoring 13 points.

Dribbles

Swingman Sasha Pavlovic left the game in the second quarter with a hip pointer. He is listed as day-to-day, but could be out awhile... Ira Newble (foot) and Jahidi White (quad) both sat out but might begin full practice Thursday and could play Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers.... Before the game, James said he hadn't yet decided if he'd play for the U.S. in next summer's world championships in Japan.

I know it is preseason, but it is a good sign they can win a game without James.

They should have enough talent as a team to make up for losing any single player for a short period up time. Jackson and Pavlovic can fill in for Lebron and do a good enough job that the other players can compensate and keep playing well. If Lebron had gone down for a long time last year the team would have fallen apart.

Pavlovic better shoot better than 1-4 from the ft line. He better start putting in extra time at the line. Shooting 68% from the line won't cut it for a guy that's a shooter first and nothing else second.

James not sick about his game

By Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND - He spent two days in the hospital last week.

He practiced only two days this week.

He still has traces of pleurisy, which sometimes makes his chest ache and robs him of his usual never-ending endurance.

Yet he scored 26 points as the Cavaliers defeated Memphis 88-84 in a preseason game Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena.

Guess LeBron James is feeling better.

James played his first game in nine days, and it would seem he'd be rusty and winded. There were moments when that seemed true.

Then came crunch time.

Yes, this was the preseason, but both Cavs coach Mike Brown and Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello decided to use most of their regulars and go for the win.

Here's what James did in the final 2:31: He scored nine points. There was a 25-footer for three points, a 20-footer for two points and he was 4-of-4 at the foul line.

Talk about a good closer; James slammed the door and declared victory.

It might have been just an exhibition game, but James didn't want to lose. Earlier in the game, there were times when he seemed to be breathing heavily. He's not in top condition following the battle with pleurisy.

But he was on the court for 33 minutes, and he seemed stronger at the end than at any point in the game.

``It's easy to take LeBron for granted,'' Brown said.

Brown said James ``busted his butt'' in the past two practices, so he decided to let his star have a good dose of game action.

It seemed that James was intent upon making a statement the moment he stepped on the court. In his first four minutes, he scored seven points.

There was a 19-footer from the wing.

A smooth reverse left-handed layup in traffic.

A sweet 3-point swish from deep in the corner.

Wasn't this guy supposed to be resting?

In the second quarter, James had another left-handed reverse layup.

Now a quick timeout: Hey, kids, James can jump over the scoreboard, but he can make layups with both hands. Nice, fundamental layups, grazing the glass, dropping through the net.

It's called fundamentals, and James believes in them, just as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird did before him. This is not to put James in the same class as the basketball-blessed Trinity -- at least not yet.

The approach is the same -- lots of steak with all that sizzle.

James showed that late in the second quarter, when he took 1-2-3 dribbles, floated in the air and banked in an 8-footer from the left wing. As James matures as a shooter, he is using the backboard more often.

That's something else every young player can emulate.

After that middle-range shot, James tossed in a 20-footer from behind the backboard -- a ridiculous turnaround. Near the end of the half, it was a superb swish from 25 feet for three points.

The Cavs have improved tremendously on defense. They are committed to stopping teams from driving to the basket. They are drawing charges, making determined double-teams, usually at the right times.

``But we haven't done much with offense,'' Brown said. ``You can blame me for that.''

Don't.

If the Cavs get their defense together, they will eventually score. But right now, the team needs more movement, more variety of plays. They sometimes fall back into the old habit of the end of last season, throwing the ball to James and standing around waiting for him to do something.

And as one reporter mentioned to James, he looked pretty sharp considering all that.

``If you think that's sharp, I'm not even 100 percent yet,'' he said.

``I was winded and, sometimes, breathing hard. I can do a lot more.''

That's the best news of all for Cavs fans.

I was at the game last night.

Eric Snow, while supposedly training hard in the offseason, still stinks. He really shouldn't even be on the team. He can't shoot, can't dribble while being guarded and his passing stinks. His first shot again was an airball. In fact, 2 of his 4 shots hit nothing. There's no way Brown can start him.

Jones didn't do much, but had a couple steals, and assists. He just looks like Isiah Thomas compared to Snow.

Pavlovic still can't shoot off the dribble. If he gets an open pass where he can shoot right away, then he can hit a couple. If he needs to dribble first, he couldn't hit the ocean while standing on the beach.

LBJ took a few bad shots, but is still head and shoulders above everyone on the court. He could use some time working on his free throws. He missed too many early in the game.

Drew Gooden has got even better. His defense was amazing. He was busting his can all night trying to play defense. Brown's system seems to be working for him. His shooting and rebounding was very good.

Hughes looks good. He just has the look of a player (if that makes sense). Skinny legs, though.

Luke Jackson will hit alot of 3 pointers this year, but like Pavlovic, he's better shooting directly from a pass. He'll contribute nicely this season.

Pao Gasol is right on. That boy is good.

The new arena announcer is extremely annoying. It's Ronnie Duncan, who was a sportscaster on channel 19 for a while. Screams wayyy too much.

Since you are the first person I know of who has seen the Cavs this year what do you think the lineup will be? Do you think that Jones brings more to the table than Jackson? I've heard a lot of good things about Jackson and I've also heard that Hughes looks better at PG than Jones. Without seeing them play this year it sounds like a lineup of Hughes, Jackson, James, Gooden, and Z would be good with Jones, Pavlovic, and Marshall coming off the bench as the main subs. I just hope they can get another big man to step up until Wild Thing gets healthy.

Jackson , imo, is more valuable off the bench than as a starter. His shooting will help keep the team in games when the starters need to sit. He's improved his passing and rebounding and adds more than just a potential scorer.

I could see Hughes as a pg, no doubt. I'm sure he could handle it.

I see Jackson, Marshall and Pavlovic as the main reserves.

If you notice, they spread Z's minutes out between Gooden, Henderson and Marshall. They can get away with doing that against most teams because there are so few decent centers in the league. I think Jafattie White will get more pt against the big boys: Shaq, Wallace, for no other reason than to use up some fouls.

They should be fine until Varaejo comes back.

Now, if they were to get rid of Snow(unlikely), I could easily see Hughes as the pg and Jackson as either sg or sf, depending on what's best for LeBron.

Their change in defensive philosophy is clearly evident.

Good to see the new coach is getting on Lebron to make sure he does the little things. The Cavs need to learn to play as a team and give 100% effort on both ends of the floor.

In his defense, LeBron scores 30

James fails to get back, draws coach's ire, leads way

By Tom Reed

Beacon Journal sports writer

TRENTON, N.J. - LeBron James thought he had been fouled midway through the fourth quarter on a baseline move that resulted in a turnover.

He lobbied for a call. He glared at the nearest official. He stood indignant as the play headed to other end of the court.

Nobody seemed sympathetic to James' protest, least of all Cavaliers coach Mike Brown.

So after James made a pretty spinning basket moments later, the superstar was summoned to the bench for a reminder about hustling back in transition.

Say this for the rookie coach, he allows no defensive lapse to go unnoticed even when it's committed by one of the NBA's elite players. James got the message, and his teammates got the victory -- beating the Philadelphia 76ers 106-102 -- in a preseason game Thursday night at Sovereign Bank Arena.

The win was not secure until guard Eric Snow made a key defensive stop on a driving Allen Iverson with less than 10 seconds remaining and the Cavaliers nursing a two-point lead. James grabbed the rebound and converted a pair of free throws to finish with a team-high 30 points.

Snow's play on Iverson, who tallied 36 points, drew a high-five from his coach. But 10 minutes after the game, Brown was lamenting an inconsistent effort that enabled the Sixers to shoot 48.9 percent from the field.

``You are not going to hold everybody to 39 percent or under 90 points, but that said we've got to bring the effort,'' Brown said. ``We took a lot of plays off this game.

``... Right now, we look good in spurts, but that's not the mark of a good team.''

James likely would agree. Playing in his second game after missing a week with pleurisy (an infection of the lung lining), James logged 36 minutes and hit 11-of-23 from the floor.

The All-NBA standout said he had no problem with Brown's friendly reminder about playing both ends.

``I got to respect Coach for that and get back on defense... instead of standing down there and crying about a foul,'' James said. ``I got a bad habit with that, but I'm working on it.''

It was James' first appearance in Trenton since Feb. 8, 2003, when he scored 52 points for St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Prime-Time Shootout. ``The last time here the fans were cheering for me,'' James said, smiling.

The Cavaliers (4-2) received a balanced effort offensively. Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Damon Jones had his best shooting night, scoring 14 points on 5-of-10 attempts.

Larry Hughes sat out the second half for precautionary reasons, nursing a finger injury he sustained Saturday night against Milwaukee.

Marshall sits

Forward Donyell Marshall missed the Sixers game with tendinitis in his right elbow. Marshall said the injury isn't serious and that he would have played if it had been a regular-season game. Marshall said it bothered him Wednesday night as he shot 2-of-10 and scored eight points in 28 minutes.

Rivera released

The Cavs released rookie guard Filiberto Rivera on Thursday, but Brown said the move did not solidify a spot for fourth-year point guard Mike Wilks.

Brown has been pleased with Wilks, averaging 5.0 points and 12 minutes, but he cautioned that the team has options, which include keeping an extra big man and using Larry Hughes as the third point guard behind Eric Snow and Damon Jones.

Clock watcher

Brown said ideally he doesn't want any of his players averaging more than 38 to 40 minutes per game. This might come as news to James, who led the league last season with 42.4 minutes a game. The coach said he hasn't broached the topic with the players.

Dribbles

Ira Newble missed his sixth consecutive game with a foot strain.... Martynas Andriuskevicius (flu-like symptoms) did not make the trip.... Sixers forward Chris Webber (right quad) missed the game.... Ilgauskas on the new dress code, which he supports: ``It's not like they are making us wear tuxedos.''

Hawg,
Did you see the sentence about keeping Hughes as the third pg ? Not bad. Maybe that can lead to Hughes being #2.

Jones seemed to have a nice game last night.
5-10fg, 3-4 3fg, 1-1 ft. He got the start, too, so we may have seen the opening night starting lineup in that game.

Jackson had another bad shooting night with 1-6 from the field. He needs to more more away from the ball to get to those open corners. He seems to be a better shooter from the corners than the top. He should also drive to the hoop more to draw fouls. His foul shooting would be a nice addition to the team ft%.
