Cavs 2010-11 season (official thread)

I'd so love to come away with Chris Singleton somehow....Not saying the guy is anywhere as good as Durant, b/c he isn't, but defensivley the guy is just a beast. I love the idea of a 6'10 SF who can guard the perimeter as well as the paint.

If we could get Irving, Kanter, and come away with another first rounder and address SF, it'd just be insane.

I've seen several mocks where Charlotte takes Singleton at #19 so it'll be interestingto see if Cleveland has any ideas on re-entering the first round assuming the use #1 and #4.

I'd love Singleton as well, but they would probably need to get a pick in the 15 to 20-something range to get him. It would be awesome if he dropped to the 2nd round pick, but that is doubtful. Usually there are teams in that range that will look to sell picks so let Gilbert do what he does best.

Spend money on the Cavs, God blessed us with Gilbert as the owner:)

Cavs = not fucking around

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2011/news/story?id=6603100

Already owners of the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to sweeten their position by securing the second pick as well, according to league sources.

The Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.

The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, along with their fourth pick, to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' second pick.

Cleveland would then buy Hamilton out of the $25 million remaining in the last two years on his contract, leaving the veteran shooting guard free to sign with another club as a free agent. Chicago would be one of the likeliest destinations.

Maybe I don't understand the economics of the NBA salary cap; but why would Detroit give Clevland their no. 8 pick to just to take Hamilton off their hands? Is trimming $25M off the payroll better than having the no. 8 pick? Why can't Detriot just buy out his contract and keep their draft pick?

Because they don't have Gilbert as an owner:biggrin:

It's probably not just a cap thing in this instance. It's probably a payroll thing. I can't imagine the economics of running an NBA franchise in the city of Detroit are looking all that rosy. Being able to get out from under a big contract like that without having to front the cash themselves might be a big deal for them.

Meanwhile, Dan Gilbert = BAMF. I like this aggressive approach, even in a draft that is considered to be week like this one. I think it might be reaching a point where picks in this draft are being undervalued. If everybody want to sell right now, the Cavs could do very well for themselves by being smart buyers.

From a player personnel perspective, would folks here rather have Irving + Williams or Irving + Kanter or some other big? Could a move to #2 just be to circumvent anybody else trying to get in and take a player like Kanter ahead of them even though many have felt he might still be there at #4?

Reportedly 24 of 30 NBA franchises lost money last year. To take 25 million off the books is significant, including 14.5 million this year.

It is purely financial.

Just as the move for the Clippers this year was. We essentially bought the #1 pick for 8 million b/c they wanted Baron Davis's contract off teh books. We didn't get their first rounder solely b/c they liked Mo Williams that much.

The NBA has a lot of franchises in dire straights until the new CBA is worked out.

i think i would rather have williams then kanter. but thats b/c i have only seen williams play and i like what i see out of him. i dont know about you guys but he reminds me of gerald wallace.

also i am not too sure that the cavs would have to trade with the wolves to get williams. i really dont think the wolves will ultimately pick williams b/c they have beasley already and kanter makes more sense for them (but they are horrible at drafting so who knows). if that were to happen williams falls to #4 for the cavs and they still have the 8th pick and can get alex burks.

I'm fairly confident if Minny stays at #2 they take Williams and look to deal him later. Minny wants desperately out of the pick though, and are hoping to make the deal pre-draft.

In the event they stay at #2, I think they're just looking BPA for highest trade value.

That is why Kanter may make it to #4.

1. Irving
2. Williams
3. Knight
4. Kanter

you may be right. but kanter makes sense for the wolves. he measured in at 6'11. hes a center, which is exactly what the wolves need.

Bump this up to the top (Damn the Heat thread is getting more time than this one.)

Draft is Thursday, 7:00 PM. What rumors are you guys hearing about what the Cavs might do with their selections?

What I'm hearing is:

1 - Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke

4 - Enos Kanter (Center) OR Trade OR Kanter and trade to Bullets for # 6 and 18.

* If trade happens then

6- Jonas Valanciunas (Center)

18 - Klay Thompson, SG or Alec Burks

Don't hear too many rumors about 2nd round slections but:

32 - Reggie Jackson, PG (No rumor but hoping)

54 - Jamie Skeen, PF (No rumor but hoping)

Also multiple rumored trades with Andy, Sessions, Davis, Hickson and the TE. too many to put up here.

Thoughts??

Thompson will be long gone by pick 18, and most likely Burks too. I think Reggie Jackson will get taken in the bottom of the 1st.

FWIW, here is Chris Ford's latest mock released today.
Kyrie Irving 1 (1)

Analysis: Two days before the draft, the Cavs are still claiming they haven't made up their mind. ESPN's Ric Bucher reported the Cavs had settled on Irving on Monday, but while the report was running on the ticker, owner Dan Gilbert was meeting with Derrick Williams in Cleveland.
While sources continue to point toward Irving's being the No. 1 pick, Williams' camp is holding out hope that it has a chance. Could the Cavs still have concerns about Irving's toe? Or are they worried that at No. 4 they can't get a solid big man?

Enes Kanter 1 (4)

Analysis: We had Jonas Valanciunas in this position last week. But on Monday, we reported that Valanciunas' buyout with his team in Lithuania would prohibit him from coming to the NBA next season.
The Cavs love Valanciunas, but do they love him enough to draft him even if he won't be coming to the NBA next season? I doubt it at No. 4. The Cavs have been exploring a number of trade possibilities to move down a few spots in the draft. If they stay here, I think Kanter is their guy.

Chandler Parsons 2 (32) PF Florida
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=cle
If the Cavs get a point guard and a big man early in the draft, don't be surprised to see them reach a bit for Parsons here. He has great size, is very skilled and has been one of the best workout players in the draft.

Jereme Richmond 2 (54)- SF Illinois

Richmond is an athlete and little else right now. But as a long-term project, he still has major upside.
