CB Ashton Youboty (CB Coach Purdue)

Bucs Add Corner Depth with Youboty

A third-round pick of the Bills in 2006, Youboty has played in 43 NFL games with seven starts, most commonly filling the nickel back role in Buffalo

On Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the signing of sixth-year cornerback Ashton Youboty to a two-year contract. The 27-year-old Youboty played his first five NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills before becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Ashton Youboty had one interception in five seasons with the Bills, where he mostly played cornerback in nickel packages. The former Ohio State standout shared the Big Ten lead in interceptions in 2004 with four.

TAMPA ? CB Ashton Youboty was on the Bucs' radar when he came out of Ohio State in 2006, but he didn't find his way onto the team's roster until Monday.

Tampa Bay signed the free agent to a two-year contract with the hope he could add depth and increase the competition in the secondary, where Aqib Talib and Myron Lewis are missing with hamstring injuries.

Youboty spent five seasons with the Bills, who made him a third-round draft pick. His role has been mostly at nickel back, but the Bucs aren't wedded to anything. Youboty is expected to play Thursday against the Patriots.

"The sooner the better," he said Monday, after joining the Bucs for afternoon practice. "I already have a grasp of the base concept. I'll pick up the nickel (position) as time goes by and see what happens."

Youboty, 27, said Buffalo's scheme under defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was very similar, so he's familiar with many of the concepts. He likely will step in and create competition with players such as Lewis, Elbert Mack and seventh-round pick Anthony Gaitor.

Because Youboty's deal contains no guaranteed money, the Bucs aren't under any financial pressure to keep him on the final roster. That probably made the deal very appealing to the Bucs, who were surprised he wasn't already on another roster.

"When a talented guy like Youboty doesn't get picked up, we're going to make room for him and get him on the squad," said defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who scouted Youboty before the 2006 draft.

Youboty has played in 43 games, including 13 last season. Whether he can duplicate that in Tampa Bay is up to him.

"We'll just get those guys out there and let them compete," coach Raheem Morris said. "Right now, there's an opportunity to see some other people. We always talk about long-term thinking. ? You never know what's going to happen."

Bucs Youboty remains patient in new situation

The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- As a veteran cornerback thrust onto a new team after the start of the preseason, Ashton Youboty needs to make something happen fast.

Or not. It helps that he already knows the Buccaneers' defense pretty well.

"There's no urgency," Youboty said Tuesday after intercepting a pass in his second day of practice with the Bucs. "I think It's more about responsibility and knowing what you're trying to do, where they need you and playing within the scheme of a defense.

"Football is like chess. They teach you about the pieces and you know where they've got to be. They just do their jobs and the guys who make plays turn into rooks, pawns or whatever."

The 27-year-old Youboty signed a two-year contract with Tampa Bay on Monday. He played his first five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, most of it using the Tampa-2 defense with which he is now reunited.

"Even going back to college (at Ohio State), I've just tried to be an aggressive corner. So I'm familiar with all of this, the footwork . . . we ran the same things, but there are some unique differences in where they want their players to be."

New Bucs corner eager for chance to impress

TAMPA, Fla. -- Life is moving at a rapid pace during this NFL preseason. Because of the lockout, there's less time for teams to assess their newcomers, fewer opportunities for players on the periphery to impress their coaches.

So when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the New England Patriots at 7:30 ET Thursday in their second 2011 exhibition game, and first in the friendly confines of Raymond James Stadium, this is the time for many players to take advantage of whatever chances come their way in hopes of making the final roster.

That's not exactly the case for newly signed cornerback Ashton Youboty, the former Buffalo Bills veteran out of Ohio State who signed earlier this week.

The Bucs know plenty about Youboty, having scouted him heavily coming into the NFL draft in 2006. And they've seen loads of videotape on him from his five seasons with the Bills, for whom he played a career-high 13 games last season, primarily as a nickel back.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder certainly wasn't a splashy free-agent signing on a club that purposely steered clear of that big-ticket market. But he adds some depth and competition, given the hamstring injuries bothering Aqib Talib and Myron Lewis. He also could prove helpful should Talib face any suspensions stemming from his legal troubles in Texas this spring.

The Bucs jumped at the chance to bring him in. One reason is his familiarity with the Tampa Two coverage scheme that the Bills employed, with some tweaks of their own.

"During my career and even back in college, I've just been an aggressive corner," he said.

"I love playing man, and I've just gotten so much better at the zone coverage -- the Tampa Two defense four years straight. Being able to learn a 3-4 defense, being able to learn and experience that -- but now I'm back in the Tampa Two so I'm familiar with all of this. We ran the Tampa Two (in Buffalo), but they had unique differences in where they wanted their players to be.

"Now I can see where the baby was born."

Jaguars fill final two roster spots with CB Ashton Youboty and DE George Selvie

Submitted by Tania Ganguli on November 15, 2011

The Jaguars left their roster at 51 players yesterday after placing cornerback Rashean Mathis, offensive lineman Eben Britton and and linebacker Kyle Bosworth on injured reserve but only signing one player.

They will fill the roster today with cornerback Ashton Youboty and defensive end George Selvie.

Youboty played his first five years with the Buffalo Bills after playing at Ohio State where Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker coached. Tucker was very involved in recruiting Youboty to Ohio State.

Youboty seeks role

Cornerback Ashton Youboty, who wasn?t re-signed by the Bills after the lockout and then was cut by Tampa Bay, said he?s eager for the opportunity with the Jaguars, who signed him earlier this week.

?You only get so many opportunities to show you have the talent that got you in this league in the first place,?? he said

Del Rio said, ?We?ll give Ashton a chance to come in here and kind of see where he is as a player, teach him how we do things, let him compete and then determine where that goes.??

With both starting cornerbacks out, the Jaguars will have to defend the Texans? Pro Bowl WR Andre Johnson, who is coming back from a hamstring injury, with backups William Middleton and Ashton Youboty.

Youboty signed with the team on Nov. 15 and played 23 snaps in sub packages in Cleveland.

?It?s part of the business,? Youboty said. ? We play a violent sport and you?ve got to be ready.?

This will be Youboty?s eighth start. He was mostly a backup in his first five years with the Bills. He was cut by the Bucs at the end of training camp this year.

?I feel comfortable in the scheme. I think I know the defense well enough to go out there and compete,? he said.

?You?ve got to go out there and apply technique and fundamentals,? defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said. ?Everyone has talent. [Johnson] is a special player. We know that.?

Tucker coached Youboty at Ohio State.

?I feel good about him,? Tucker said. ?I have confidence in what he can do. He looked good in practice and he played more than 20 snaps last week. He was very, very solid in our practices and they are pretty competitive.?

Rare defensive score

Cornerback Ashton Youboty, making his first for the Jaguars in place of injured Derek Cox, scooped up an Arian Foster fumble on the Texans? second offensive play and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.

?We were in a zone coverage, and our defensive line did a good job of pushing inside the pocket, and he had to bounce outside and made a move in front of the receiver, and I made the tackle. I saw the ball on the ground and got up and ran with it,? Youboty said.

It was the first touchdown of Youboty?s career.

?At the end of the day, it doesn?t matter because we didn?t win,? he said.

Dec. 26, 2011 - by John Oehser - Youboty becomes 10th Jags' defensive back to be placed on IR
The Jaguars? move to place Ashton Youboty (hamstring) on injured reserve means the team now has placed 10 defensive backs on injured reserve this season. With Kevin Rutland also out last Saturday, Morgan Trent and David Jones finished the Jaguars? loss to the Titans at corner.
