[FONT=ARIAL, SANS SERIF]One of the successful Wayne High School programs emphasized at the Huber Heights City School Board meeting on May 11 was the Wayne Mentoring Program.
The Freshman Solutions program addresses the concerns of incoming freshman. This improves on the previous two hour orientation was not sufficient to address needs and anxieties of incoming students.
Wayne Principal John Allen, Melissa Page, Cheryl Fenton and Nancy Baker addressed the board and are some of the staff members who have been instrumental in instituting this program two years ago along with Selena Crace. Student mentors Donnie Evege, Brandy Wright and Breanna Phillips also addressed the board
The program had 125 junior and senior mentors this year to assist freshman and is expected to have 175 next year. These mentors are trained to be role models and to help respond to bullying in the schools.
Bus transportation is provided each year to bring students to kick-off day at Wayne High School, which will be Aug. 21 this year. It is estimated that 50 staff members were involved last year in various aspects of the Warrior Kick-off.
Warrior Kick-off helps to establish a sense of personal connection among attendees. It helps to make each participant welcome and an integral part of the Wayne student body.
Freshmen are introduced to student mentors and also receive class schedules and tour the building. In addition to hearing from several administrators, they are oriented about important issues by upper class students. They also receive a back-pack, called a “spirit package” with various materials included for which the students pays $15. Nearly 500 freshman attended the Warrior Kick-off last year.
There were about 200 parents that attended the parent component of Freshman Solutions last year. Parents are also involved in answering parent questions.
Wayne Superintendent William Kirby told the leaders of the program that they have taken it to a level in two years which is “fantastic.”
“We appreciate your efforts and support your efforts as well,” said board member Carl Fisher.
In a related piece of legislation, the board accepted a donation of $20,000 from the Ohio Dept. of Education’s High School Critical Transitions Grant that will be used for the “Freshman Solutions” program at Wayne and to develop short-cycle assessments in mathematics and science.
Andy Ballauer, Huber Heights City Schools Content Area Supervisor, told the Courier how this grant amount would be divided. He indicated that $1,400 would be used for the Freshman Solutions mentor training while $8,813 would be utilized for Freshman Solutions supplies. This includes incentives for attendance and academic achievements such as clothing, electronics and other youth oriented rewards.
The remainder of the monies will be used to assist eighth, ninth and 10th graders to do well on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) in math and science. This will involve 22 content area and special education teachers, to realign and develop short-cycle assessments. Grant monies must be obligated by June 30 and spent by Aug. 15.
