CB Doran Grant (Official Thread)

Michigan Rivals- Premium Subscription required

Grant says that this was his 2nd visit to the Big House, he visited there last season when Michigan took on Michigan State.

Was very impressed, said Michigan was already in his top 5 or 6, but that they have moved up his list.

He's visiting Ohio State next week to see them take on USC. He plans on taking another trip up to the Big House in November for the Ohio State game.

Said he didn't spend a lot of time with current players but that he did get to hang out with Justin Turner who he knows a little bit. Said that he spent time with some of the recruits, including fellow Ohio JR CB Greg Brown who he met for the first time on the trip.

St. V-M's Grant cornering market on work ethic, talent
By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Sept 16, 2009
Beacon Journal staff writer

On this particular school day, lunch wasn't very special for St. Vincent-St. Mary senior football player Doran Grant.

Inside his crumpled, brown-paper sack was a basic ham and cheese sandwich, Doritos, a honeybun and a bottle of water.

''I pack my lunch,'' he said proudly. ''It's nothing special.''

But Irish coach Dan Boarman has been around football long enough to know when he's coaching a special player.

It's not often that a player can play wide receiver and running back, take snaps at quarterback. play in the defensive backfield and be an impact player at each position. But that's what Grant does and that's why so many Division I colleges are recruiting him hard.

''He's being recruited by most of the major [Division I] colleges,'' Boarman said. ''What makes him special, in my opinion, is how hard he works at everything he does, whether it's with the weights, working with the defensive backs, the running backs or at quarterback. He takes everything to task, and he does everything to the best of his ability.''

Defensive coordinator Mark Murphy sees a long future for Grant in the defensive backfield.

''He's the best cover corner I've ever coached in high school,'' said Murphy, who played 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers as a safety and was inducted into the Packers' Hall of Fame in 1998. ''A lot of players play the position with pure speed. But as you start learning technique, and if you have speed, you're going to be a great corner.

''The thing I like about him is he's always looking to improve his technique. Even when he jams [a receiver] at the line of scrimmage, his technique with his foot and hand placement is sound. He can open his hips and change directions when he needs to and he makes his adjustments when he back pedals. You need to be able to do all of those things as a cornerback because if you take one misstep, you're going to get beat.''
Murphy also likes Grant's demeanor on the field.

''He's a humble, level-headed kid,'' Murphy said. ''That's what you need when you play that position because there are times when you're going to get beat, and there are times when you're going to have great success and he stays on that even keel.''

Grant has the size (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) and speed (4.37 40-yard dash) that colleges like, and most likely he'll play cornerback in college. Grant, who finished third in the state last year in the Division II 110-meter hurdles, has already been offered scholarships from Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Georgia, and said the attention has been overwhelming but fun.

''It's kind of what I expected,'' Grant said.

SVSM edges Archbishop Hoban, 14-10

Tim Rogers, The Plain Dealer, September 19, 2009 6:18 a.m.

St. Vincent-St. Mary battled Archbishop Hoban and itself.
Hoban battled St. Vincent-St. Mary and itself.

In the end, it was another link in the storied rivalry between the two private schools in Akron on Friday. It was disjointed and fragmented, but you won't hear the Irish whine following their 14-10 victory in front of 10,235 fans (9,983 paid) in the first high school football game played at InfoCision Stadium.
. . .
Junior Doran Grant, who is being recruited by the likes of Ohio State and Stanford, scored his third TD in two years against Hoban when he turned a 15-yard reception from junior Oliver Hildebrandt into a 78-yard touchdown with 3:17 left in the first quarter. Grant caught the ball between two defenders and was off to the races.
"When I secured the ball, I could feel I was going to break free," said Grant, who scored on an interception and a fumble recovery last year against the Knights. "This is incredible. I just wanted to take it all in and perform to the best of my abilities."

Two of the top seven juniors in the state of Ohio will watch the Irish play USC, include defensive end Chris Rock (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and defensive back Doran Grant (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary). Both have already received a scholarship offer from the Fighting Irish.

Grant was offered at Georgias camp after getting moved up with the older recruits and continuing to make plays. He says he's open and lists Ohio State, Illinois, Notre Dame, Georgia, Michigan, LSU, Michigan State, and Cincinnati as his early favorites. A key factor will be early playing time and he feels he could get that at Georgia.

Georgia offered the day this talented junior camped in Athens and they were the second school to offer him. He liked what he saw at Georgia and hopes to return in the near future.
