CB Gareon Conley (D.C. Defenders)

I understand much better now the phrase "raw athletic ability" that has been used describing this young man. IIRC he got into football later than most kids. Seems like he has a rather high ceiling to my untrained eye. That one handed grab at 1:54......:yow1:

If this class wraps up as expected I'm simply amazed at not only the overall talent but the exceptional amount of versatility. It just amazes me how flexible this class is in terms of possible positions for these guys.

That's just how they coach the WRs at Massillon

To be honest, there were some pretty amazing plays in that film from a technical standpoint. He highpoints the ball, does a great job trailing the post to get the deflection without interference, and the play at :58 is what really stands out to me...comes up and shows press man, keeps his feet moving in the flat, then jumps the quick out for the INT. Most high school players would sit flat-footed in the flat and not make that play, but he keeps the feet active, which enables him to get the INT.

And then you have the physical ability. Gareon can flat out fly and has uncanny ball skills. I like his willingness to come up and be aggressive in the run game too. I also think we might have our edge man to block kicks and punts...he gets back there in a hurry. Imo, no way does he play WR at the next level. He is a good high school WR who would need a ton of work on his route running and receiver skills. Plus 6'1-6'2 WR's aren't all that rare. Rather I see a 6'2 long corner with great range and fluid hips, excellent ball skills, excellent closing speed on the ball and ball carriers, someone who shows the ability to play multiple coverages effectively on film, a willing tackler, and still has a high ceiling even with all those skills. That is extremely rare to find in a corner.

Some insiders have said that they think Gareon is the best DB in this class and to be honest, I scoffed at that notion considering Woodard and Burrows. After seeing Gareon's improvement and balling out at the highest level of D1 Ohio football, I am inclined to agree. It is obvious why the staff knocked down his doors and gave him the offer. I cannot be any more thrilled to have Gareon in the 614 and not up north.

@BillBankGreene No more visits for Gareon Conley. Talked to him today, he said "I'm done with recruiting. I'm all Buckeye." Video interview coming

Pretty sure this was already known, but just confirmation from The Bank.

Scout Video $ - Conley Interview

Part I
Part II

Talks about how he has progressed since his Junior year and his love for football. Said Ohio State felt like home on his visits and once again refers to himself as an Ohio boy. Raves about Coach Meyer & Coach Vrabel and said he committed to Urban before the 12-0 celebration. 100% Buckeye and won't be taking any other visits. Talks about his expectations for the UA Game, where he will be playing Corner. Doesn't have a preference where he plays at OSU & will report in the summer.

Very easy to like this kid & great work by The Bank, as always.

ESPN - Something to prove

12/30

Gareon Conley, CB
(Massilon, Ohio/Washington)
Conley was a virtual unknown when we first evaluated him and invited him to be an Under Armour All-American last spring. The Ohio prospect was a Michigan commit back then, but he has since switched and committed to Ohio State. The bottom line is he's been a good prospect all along. We place value in tall, long corners who are only going to add bulk. He can match up with big receivers but has the fluidity and hips to transition and hold up in man-to-man coverage. We look forward to seeing how he holds up against speed and shiftiness on the perimeter. We would expect him to prove he belongs as his film has indicated he has been worthy all along.
