Scout$--Conley De-Commits From Michigan

Oregon is out and he is in process of setting tOSU official.

Last night at MGOBLOG their reading of the tea leaves was that because he hadn't talked to the OSU staff following the game; and was still committed, with no Oregon offer, that he was all skunkbear from here forward. Them boys had me convinced that he had just weaseled OSU out of some free football tickets to see MI., and never really had any interest in the Bucks. Well what a difference about 20 hours in the news cycle makes!:)

He fooled a lot of people (and I'm not saying he did no intentionally). I don't think I'm letting anything premium out when I say that even Bill Greene admitted to this whole situation being pretty bizarre and having him fooled. Just saying the weasels at MGoBlog weren't the only ones surprised.

The issue is he is trying to be respectful...no disrespect to Bill Greene, but he lied when he said he left the game early.

Mattison was at his school today, and Gareon let him know he was no longer a commit, face-to-face the way it should be.

It's actually pretty refreshing he would rather lie to the recruiting services than be disrespectful to a coach who has spent 3 years on you. Gareon was also likely lying when he told the services he did not speak with tOSU coaches.

I didn't read anything over there, but this was actually what crossed my mind when I read that he didn't talk to the staff. I don't follow recruiting a lot, but I figured with the situation here there would have been an effort for the staff and Conley to meet up at Saturday. Glad to see Ohio kids staying home though.

I noticed yesterday that Conley made first-team All-Ohio as a WR. Assuming that he signs with the Buckeyes or any other school is there a possibility that he might play WR in college or is he too good of a DB to switch to WR or does a coach just wait until they get him on campus.

ESPN - Oregon not offering Gareon Conley?

11/27

ESPN 150 CB Gareon Conley, who expressed strong interest in Oregon while being committed to Michigan, decommitted from the Wolverines on Tuesday.

"Coach [Greg] Mattison was at my school today and we told him [I was decommitting]," Conley told WolverineNation's Tom VanHaaren. "I felt like I did it too early and didn't wait to see what else would come. I like Michigan, but I like other schools too, and I want to visit them."

Whether that opens the door for Oregon is another story. On Monday night, Conley wrote on his Twitter account that the Ducks weren't going to offer him because they wanted a safety.

Uhhhhh, maybe I'm under a different illusion here......isn't it harder to play cornerback than safety? ya know, covering the WR right off the line rather than picking them up when they've broken free? I keep thinking that CB's hips and quick turns, whereas a safety is more closing speed and hard hitting with someone coming straight at one.....

Bottom line, I would think it's easier to take a CB and turn them into a safety than vice versa, and ergo a good CB is a scarcer commodity. I figure I'm missing something here, based on Oregon's position on Conley, but what am I missing?

I think it is more about Oregon not wanting to fly Conley out from Ohio and spending time on him this late in the game when they have little-to-no chance with him

My understanding is that he's good enough to contribute at either position, and a decision (WR v. CB) would be made after he arrives. Ahem, if he commits. Would probably depend on where he's needed more...
