SKULL SESSION: JEFF OKUDAH LOOKS LIKE A CREATE-A-PLAYER, J.K. DOBBINS MAKES IT KNOWN HE DOMINATED THE GAME, AND SHAUN WADE'S NEXT UP FOR BIA

PROTOTYPICAL.
One of my favorite quotes from Damon Arnette – and good lord, there are many – is when he called Kendall Sheffield an "action figure" after his first practice as a Buckeye following his transfer.

He was not wrong. Sheffield did look like a damn action figure, which meant he just fit right in amongst all the other Super Solider-esque individuals who look like they were assembled in a lab for the sole purpose of playing football.

Like Jeff Okudah.

Soon after arriving at Ohio State last year for his only season with the Buckeyes, he met Okudah.

The first impression was a lasting one.

“Looks like a made-up video game character,” said Hafley, now Boston College’s head coach. “He’s got the size, the length, the speed and crazy acceleration for how big he is. When I got there, I saw it. I saw it on tape.”

...

This was a guy who longed to win the Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented to the nation’s top defensive back. He made a screenshot of the award statue the wallpaper for his phone before he had ever intercepted a pass in college, before he became a feared defensive back, before he had even played as a full-time starter.

Okudah was a finalist for the award.

“And he should have won it,” Hafley said emphatically. “It just shows you. He does not want to be ordinary. He wants to be the best. That’s just the guy’s mindset and it’s probably been that way forever.”

To that last point, it already quite clearly bullshit at the time when Okudah lost the Thorpe Award to a dude who wasn't even the best defensive back on his team. And with Okudah becoming the highest-drafted cornerback in the past 23 years and Grant Delpit going in the second round as the ninth defensive back taken, it got sooooo much worse.

Thieves.

9. JEFF OKUDAH, 2019
With a season still fresh in everyone's minds, Jeff Okudah's junior year has been the most recent set of evidence towards the Buckeyes' claim to DBU. El Jefe was rarely targeted but finished the year with nine pass breakups and three interceptions.

The Texas native was a consensus First Team All-American and was snubbed for the Jim Thorpe Award.

Jeff Okudah already impressing Lions veteran cornerback

It can’t be easy for rookies entering the NFL in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has prevented the first-year players from interacting in-person with their new coaches and teammates.

The first time most of the league’s new crop of players will be with their teams is whenever training camp begins. It remains to be seen whether camps will get started in late July like always.

But Detroit Lions first-round pick Jeff Okudah is already making an impression on a veteran within his position group.

"I feel like he's coming in here pretty confident in his ability," Justin Coleman said of Okudah during a Zoom call recently. "But he's also hungry. I can see that he wants to learn everything possible. He's asking questions and stuff when we're in the Zoom meetings. He just wants to know more. Coaches going over plays and he'll ask questions about certain things that doesn't even have to do with cornerback. It just shows he knows a lot about football.”

Coleman, the six-year veteran corner who signed with Detroit as a free agent in 2019, knows what his message to Okudah will be when the two finally meet in person.

"I'm just really going to say, compete to the end," Coleman said. "Because as you know, it's professional level. Guys are extraordinary. Sometimes I've seen where rookies are there, they're on the play, they're right there at that moment, but just didn't make the play, couldn't get the ball out, so I'm just going to say he just has to compete to finish, because that'll take him a long way.”

The Lions selected Okudah out of Ohio State with the No. 3 overall pick. He was the sixth Ohio State first-round pick as a defensive back since 2016.

"For me, I try and take bits and pieces from different guys who have came in the league," Okudah said on his approach to the next level. "So, I'm always looking at the top corners in the game. (Richard) Sherman, I like his route recognition, Stephon Gilmore with the technique that he plays with. Patrick Peterson, I like his ball skills.

"So, I try and take little bits and pieces to add to my game like that. I watch hours of film study, and I will reach out to them to try and pick their brains a little bit and just asking them to drop a little nugget on me every now and then."

Three Buckeye DBs Selected to BTN’s All-Decade Team

Jeff-Okudah-Celebration.jpg

Three of Ohio State’s great all-time defensive backs – safety Malik Hooker, safety Vonn Bell and cornerback Jeff Okudah – were among those chosen on Wednesday to BTN’s Big Ten Football All-Decade Team. Hooker was a first-team choice while Okudah appeared on the second team.

Okudah is one of just four Ohio State defensive backs to be awarded unanimous All-America status and the only to do so while playing cornerback. Okudah was a finalist for the Thorpe Award, which honors the nation’s outstanding defensive back, and started every game for the 13-1 Buckeyes. He intercepted the first three passes of his career – vs. Miami and two vs. Nebraska – and had nine pass break-ups and two forced fumbles to go along with 35 tackles (29 solo).

In April, Okudah was selected No. 3 overall by the Detroit Lions and became the highest-drafted cornerback since Shawn Springs in 1997, who was also taken No. 3 overall.
