CB Shawn Springs (All B1G, All-American, B1G DPOY, OSU HOF, Pro Bowl, All Pro)

Redskins | Struggles in secondary
Thu, 5 Oct 2006 08:19:12 -0700
Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins have allowed 17 passes of 20 yards or more after four games this season, which ties them for second worst in the league, and the secondary has become a primary area of concern. "We've got to do a better job of playing together," said CB Shawn Springs, who could be out several more weeks with a groin injury. "With all the new guys, we've got to do a better job of not worrying so much about what the other team is doing, and do a better job of knowing what our assignment is. The new guys have got to get all on the same page and the whole secondary has to play as one. That's the reason those big plays are there."

Springs close to returning to Redskins lineup
ASHBURN, Va. ?Shawn Springs took part in practice for the third consecutive day Friday, giving the Washington Redskins hope that their best cornerback will make his season debut Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
"It'll be a game-time decision," coach Joe Gibbs said. "He looked real good this week."
However, the Redskins could be without their top two defensive tackles. Cornelius Griffin and Joe Salave'a did not practice this week.
Springs had surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle eight weeks ago, then strained the groin in his right leg when he first attempted to return to practice three weeks ago. He came back this week and intercepted a pass during drills on Thursday.
Without Springs, the secondary has struggled. The Redskins are ranked 28th against the pass and have allowed more plays of 20-plus yards than any team except Green Bay.
Springs remains listed as questionable, and he will only play in a reserve role if he is deemed fit to suit up against the Titans.
"It'll be a boost whenever he gets back in there," Gibbs said. "Now should he play, you're not talking about anybody who's going to start a ball game. But he's going to get some snaps."
The news was not as good along the line. Griffin, who injured his hip and quad last week against the New York Giants, sat out practice again Friday and was downgraded from probable to questionable. Salave'a, who earlier missed two games with a strained right calf, is sidelined with a strained left calf.
If neither plays, the Redskins will likely on a rotation that includes promising rookies Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery. Backup end Renaldo Wynn can also move to tackle.
Two other defensive starters, defensive end Phillip Daniels (back) and linebacker Marcus Washington (hip), returned to practice and remain listed as probable.

Saints | Springs critical of team after Week 6 loss
Mon, 16 Oct 2006 07:26:04 -0700

Les Carpenter, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins CB Shawn Springs (groin), who made his season debut in Week 6 after being sidelined with a groin injury, was critical of his team's performance Sunday, Oct. 15 versus the Tennessee Titans. "The biggest thing is we need to find guys who want to go out and whup somebody," said Springs. When asked if this meant he thought the team was too soft, he shook his head. "Softness isn't the word," Springs said. "You have to be able to do something good, you've got to explode and go make plays." Titans RB Travis Henry rushed for 178 yards against the Redskins Sunday.

Gibbs Says Redskins 'Counting' on Springs

Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday that despite the Redskins' interest in several free agent cornerbacks, veteran Shawn Springs remains part of the team's plans and "I'm counting on Shawn being here next season."
Springs said he would like to return to the Redskins if he is paid the $6.8 million currently due him in 2007. But he said he believed the possibility of him playing elsewhere next season still existed.

The Redskins were nearing a deal with free agent cornerback Fred Smoot, a teammate of Springs's in Washington in 2004, last night and free agent corner Travis Fisher (St. Louis) is scheduled to visit Redskins Park today. But Gibbs said this should not be interpreted as meaning that Springs would be departing the Redskins.
The veteran cornerback has been the subject of recent trade talks, however, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, and a source close to Springs believed it was possible Springs could approach the Redskins about parting with some money due him in order to secure his release so that he could test the free-agent market.

Taylor, Springs Are Early No-Shows

By Howard Bryant
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 9, 2007; Page E01

While the majority of the Washington Redskins' regular players were in attendance at the team's first organized activities of the offseason yesterday, two absences were noteworthy: Neither safety Sean Taylor nor cornerback Shawn Springs was at Redskins Park.

Springs said he planned to attend the voluntary workouts later in the month, but wanted to remain focused on his Arizona training.

"My situation is cool," Springs said. "I'll be there in a couple, few weeks. It's not a statement about anything. All it has to do with is that I'm getting my work in here."
