CBF40'S Look at '09 recruiting

crazybuckfan40

Head Coach
Ok lets get this started again this year. We all know we can put our guesses in terms of the class that we might land and any other thoughts that you might want to add on guys that I missed.

Commits are colored and offers are all bolded.

QB's - If we do get Pryor which most do believe we will, then it will depend on whether or not guys like Henton and Bauserman leave. I would think that we would bring 1 in, but it might be difficult to land a stud if we do in fact land Pryor.

Russell Sheppard - Don't think there is a chance here, but he has listed us and is one of the best in the country.

DeVontae Payne - Ranked in top 100 of rivals, Has great height for a QB, but is still a little thin. He has a lot of raw talent, but right now that talent hasn't portrayed into any offers.

Morgan Newton - Ranked top 100 in rivals, but not a whole lot out there in terms of interest in tOSU.

Kevin Newsome - Not a lot out there, might be a Va Tech lean.

RB's - With us not taking a running back in this class other than maybe Thomas getting some play there in situations I think it is a no brainer that we would like to take 2 next year. I would love for a big name stud, and I think we have the recruiting pull to pull that off with Beanie leaving after this year. Brown has already said the depth chart look enticing. There are not really a whole of names out there with lot of info, but I am sure they will surface.

Bryce Brown - Kid can pick his college, and that is why I think it is a long shot.

Dante Marsh - An Ohio kid from Howland, and not much out there.

Bud Golden - An Ohio kid from Sycamore, received his offer, still not a lot of info about his favorites...Really like his film and hope that we can pull him in...

Justin Kollie - Not much info, but he has impressive junior film.

Larry Caper - Said if we offer he will visit. He is getting interest from most of the big names in the country.

Hersey Jackson - Seems to have some interest in us, but not sure how we are interested..

Fitzgerald Toussaint - He is my favorite player in state at RB. He has a ton of speed to burn and if he is really at 180 or so and could get up to about 190 then with his film I have seen and his speed I have to think there is a very solid chance for an offer here.

FB's - I would say with us brining in Martin this year that 1 should be enough, and unless they see Homan as a LB or DE, then we would be set. But if that is the case we might take a look at others.

Adam Homan - Got an early offer and chose to follow his brother to tOSU. Kid is a hard nosed player and will fit in nicely here.

Mike Marrow - In his recent update he said he was watching the rb's at practice so maybe they are looking at him as a FB. He is another tough hard nosed kid that could play DE or FB if he were to get an offer, and I feel there is a solid chance of that happening.

WR's - With us taking 3 last year, and 3 the year before, I think we might go with 2 this year.

James Green - teammate of Howard and Sabino at Krop high school?he has nice measurable for a WR, but not much else out there on him.

Chris Fields - Seems to be the top receiver in Ohio, there is a lot of talk about whether he will receive an offer soon or have to wait till camp. I will say sooner rather than later. He has stud written all over him and he was ranked in the rivals 100.

JeRon Stokes - Really liked what I saw with Stokes. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get an early offer, but he could also play DB. Not real sure where we would stand if he got an offer, but you would have to think we would be near the top.

Corey Brown - Has some early interest in us, but I don't look for him to leave the state of PA.

Marlon Brown - Big time WR, probably not going to happen, but worth the offer...

Kraig Appleton - He is the only receiver on the board that has an offer. He might be an early lean to Illinois, but I think that there is a solid chance for us here, if we push him hard.

Duron Carter - Cris Carter's son so you have to feel that he is going to get a long look, his sophomore film was fairly impressive for a sophomore. If he were to get an offer I would say it would be at camp, and you would have to think we would be the favorite if we were to offer.

Desmar Jackson - If he decides to play football he could be a highly rated WR, didn't play last year but there is talk that he might play this year.

Ricardo Duncan - Originally from Lima, now playing in Michigan somewhere? He has some ability, but not sure on interest.

TE's - I think there is a chance that we might go after 2, but probably just 1. I believe we lose Brandon Smith and Nicol, so we will only have Ballard and Dillilo after that, so we might look for 2. But for sure 1.

Dion Sims - Might go the basketball route, but he is a top 100 player in football at TE?He showed some early interest in us.

Edward Hazelett - He has great size for a TE at 6'9'', and has some interest in us?Not sure if he might get an early offer or not, but I wouldn't mind seeing one.

OL - If we land Jenkins this year we will have a solid 4 this year. We already landed one for the 09' class in Mewhort, and we have an offer out to Hall who you have to think we are the odds on favorite. So I would say we might go after 4, but 3 for sure maybe 4.

Jack Mewhort - He has great size, there isn't much film out there but he received an early offer, so you have to think he has lots of skill.

Marcus Hall - Kid is a bookend tackle after he gets some time in a program. He has received the early offer and you have to think we are the odds on favorite to land him.

Chris Watt - Kid is a stud OL and already received an offer. Excited to see his highlight tape, and I think that we have a solid chance to land him.

Nate Klatt - An Ohio boy, that will be at camp fighting for an offer.

Ricky Harris - Really likes the Bucks, has an offer from Illinois. He might be better suited for the dline, but either way I would like to see him receive an offer.

Pat McShane - Another Ohio boy, that will probably be at camp fighting for an offer.

Eric Shrive - He has some solid offers already, not sure about our interest. Probably the best lineman in PA next year.

Kyle Koehne - Another guy with some solid offers, and we are showing interest. Word is Tress might have been in school today.

Chris Freeman - Just another Ohio boy, that will probably be at camp fighting for an offer.

DE's - I would love to follow this class up with another 2 to 3 DE's. Would love to land a stud or two here to add to depth that we are trying to rebuild, especially after this years class that we hopefully add Wells as well.

Julius Ferrell - I think his best position is DE, because he is going to outgrow the LB position. Already has an offer from Illinois, would like to see us extend an offer.

Jack Lippert - One of the top players in PA. Not sure on how hard we are going to pursue him, but he has a lot of talent, and would like to see us make a push for him.

Melvin Fellows - Verbally committed to the Illini already, but we are not going to go down with out fighting. Kid is a stud we have extended an offer, but don't look for a final word for a while as he has said he is going to take all 5 visits.

Craig Drummond - He is going to be tough to get out Illinois, but kid is a stud, and is worth going all out for.

Jonathon Newsome - From the Ville' so you have to like our chances especially since he has an early offer...

DT's - Another position where I would love to add some more depth getting 2-3 guys. I would like to add another stud on top of Simon to follow up this years class with Rowell, Mobley, and GG. We already landed the best DT that we are after which is a good start.

Corey Adams - There was talk that there was an offer, but not quite yet, I think it is just a matter of time, kid is an OOS stud, and he seems to really like us.

Johnny Simon - The best player in the state and we have already got him locked up and hopefully he wants to do some recruiting to make this class really good.

Trae Tiller - Not a whole lot out there and plays at a smaller school, but he had huge numbers, probably a kid they will want to see at camp, but one to keep an eye on for sure.

LB's - We just continue to load up on LB?s. We already have Klein and Whiting committed. We landed two guys this past year. I think that we might go after a 3rd in this class because of the number of guys out there with interest in us. There are also a lot of kids that I left off this list.

Storm Klein - Already committed and he is a hard nosed kid with a lot of ability. Probably will be better suited for the Mike.

Jordan Whiting - Top 100 kid that was really infatuated with our program and committed early.

Petey Smith - Top 100 kid with an offer in hand already. The staff is very interested in him.

Anthony Fletcher - Same school as Sabino and Howard, said last year during their recruitment that if he was to get an offer he would commit to us.

Dorian Bell - Another top 100 kid that has an offer. He is a top 15 nationally type player and would be a huge coup, but he is going to have everyone after him.

Will Studlein - Another tough hard nosed Ohio kid that is going to make someone a player, but it might be hard to find the room for himi.

DB's - We only took Howard and Domicone this year and think both could very well end up at the safety position. So I think that we will go after 2 CB's and 2 S's.

Darrell Givens - Another out of the state of Maryland. He is friends with Lamarr Thomas, and I think that we have a solid chance here.

CJ Barnett - A lock down corner from Ohio. I think there is a solid chance that this one doesn't last until summer.

Dale Peterman - Another Ohio kid that might get a look for an offer, probably at camp.

Patrick White - Another Ohio kid that has said he is going to try and use camp as a way to get an offer.

Justin Turner - Michigan was the early leader, but that was with Llyod Carr. I still think it is going to be an old fashion Michigan/tOSU battle, that I really hope we win out on in the end. Kid is a great athlete and would be a beast in the back end of the secondary. Also he has said that he expects offers from both on signing day.

Derell Mason - A guy that has really been hard to get a gauge on in terms of our interest. He has been talked up as one of the best in the state, and while he has been impressive, it is hard to really get a feel on it, and also some have questioned the grades. Should know more about this in the coming weeks, in terms of our interest.

EJ Banks - Big time player out of PA...Cousin of Joey Galloway so you have to like our chances...

Denicos Allen - He could be a S/LB hybrid, but could also stay at safety I think?I was really impressed with his film and thin there is a chance that he could earn an offer at camp.

QB - Not sure
RB - Larry Caper
RB - Fitzgerald Toussaint
FB - Adam Homan
WR - JeRon Stokes
WR - Chris Fields
TE - Ed Hazelett
OL - Jack Mewhort
OL - Chris Watt
OL - Marcus Hall
OL/DL - Ricky Harris
DE - Melvin Fellows
DE - Not sure
DT - John Simon
DT - Cory Adams
DE/DT - Trae Tiller
LB - Storm Klein
LB - Jordan Whiting
LB - Too many to choose from right now
CB - Darell Givens
CB - CJ Barnett
S - JT Turner
S - Derell Mason
S/LB - Denicos Allen

That would give us 24...Not a class for of a ton of headliners, but a load of solid 4 stars to go along with this years class and they should go together and make for some very dangerous teams in the future...Another thing to think of is we might try and take a look at either a kicker or punter so Ben Buchanon doesn't have to try and do both in a couple years...

Here is something I found posted from RB that I figured would fit in here...

RBO7OSU said:
QB- I would think we take a QB next year (assuming we get Pryor). Seems many are high on Payne though I have only seen limited film on him. Great size though and I would think we would be in shape to take someone more raw. Barkley is a longshot, though he is very talented. Sheppard is going to be sick but I highly doubt we get a real look with Pryor. I would think we would have a good shot if he were recruited as an athlete, being so closely related to Eddie George. Top 100 Rivals Tyrik Rollison lists interest but I haven't heard much about him.

RB- Looks like there are some decent prospects out there, though many are under the athlete category. I'm with Wad in thinking Mason is best suited on defense, though he is a possibility at RB. Turner from Massilon looks like a star but also looks best suited early on at DB. Bryce Brown is extremely talented but is a longshot at best. I would love to see us get involved with Cierre Wood and he is so talented both on offense and defense. Caper is intriguing though I'm not sure how interested he is. At an early glance it looks as though OOS may be a possibility and we'll probably have to wait for some names to surface.

FB- It looks like the staff may want to take a FB or LB/FB mix in '09. I'm not sure if Studlien would qualify but he, Marrow, or Homan seem to be good options. I think Marrow could be a future bulldozer at FB if we are willing to use a scholly on a FB.

WR- Looks like we are in on some real talent for '09. I would love to have get Chris Fields and Je'Ron Stokes. Both are highly rated and appear to have good potential left. Dion Sims looks like a stud and could end up at TE. On top of that, we have a nice little pipeline to Orchard St. Mary's. Corey Brown from Gateway is one that Bob L really likes and I would suspect that we will be recruiting him.

TE- Nobody has popped up for '09 quite yet it seems. Hazlett is an intriguing prospect at 6'8 and I think the TE from Ursuline is for '10.

OL- We look to be pretty set for '08 here but a couple '09 studs sure wouldn't hurt. I really like Rick Harris early on, though I'm thinking he may be a camp offer. Leon Hill from Ill. popped up recently as interested in OSU and he is worth looking into at 6'6 330. Marcus Hall figures to be a top OL for '09 and you would have to think he is an OSU lock being from Glenville. Cameron Iluicci also seems like a good prospect. More names should pop up be we apear to be in on some good ones early on.

DL- Looks like we could have a great DL class for '09. Simon has to be in the top 3 in the country at DT (I think he could go toe to toe with Forston, Thompson, and Tyson this year personally) and he loves the Bucks. Corey Adams would make a great tandem with Simon and it doesn't hurt that we were his childhood favorite team. Jack Lippert looks like Gholston Jr. and I would love to see us land him. Craig Drummond from Illinois just popped up in the Top 100 as another top DL interested in us. Marvin Fellows is a DE who has great size and will likely get a look at camp.

LB- Hands down the most stacked position for us in '09, epsecially with Storm Klein and Jordan Whiting already committed to OSU. I am really listing all the other positions summaries to get to this one. I really think we could end up with 5 LB types in '09. I love Klein's burst through his tackles and Whiting has excellent athleticism. I have seen some sophmore film on Studlien and I could see him being an OSU recruit. Now with his junior year over, it sounds as if he may be the real deal. Count me on board for wanting Studlien in '09. Here is the shocking thing though...I like Julius Ferrell slightly better on film than Whiting, Klein, and Studlien! Ferrell has astounding athleticism for his size and is just nasty. I don't know how he wasn't a top 100 player on Rivals really. I also think Ferrell is a good LEO candidate. Then you have Dorian Bell who is just a great talent you would never pass on (though the Hale situation can't have helped us much with him I wouldn't think) but I could see him at other positions. Beyond Bell, you also have Petey Smith from Florida with an offer and Quanthony Fletcher from Krop who wants to follow Sabino and Howard to OSU (remains to be seen how highly sought out he will be though). Then you have Jelani Jenkins from MD. and Willie Ferrell from FL. who just showed up with OSU interest on the Rivals 100. That Adam Homan guy doesn't look so bad either. Needless to say it should be exciting to see how '09 shakes out at LB.

DB- A lot of instate names thus far but I haven't been able to watch many on film. I really like C.J. Barnett...he has great size and instincts. Reminds me of Malcolm Jenkins quite a bit. If he has improved on his speed, an OSU offer wouldn't surprise me at camp. Storm Timson looks to be a prospect to keep an eye on. Justin Turner appears to be the main man in Ohio for '09 at DB, if that indeed is his future position. It also appears we may be in good shape early on for Darrell Givens from Maryland...great size and I can't wait to see his film. Denicos Allen also could be a sleeper at safety, though I think he is a LB in a safeties body. My main man at DB would have to be Darrell Mason though. I think he has future star written all over him.

Overall: It is way early but I thought I would go ahead and throw out an '09 wishlist of about 20:

QB: Devontae Payne OH
ATH/RB: Justin Turner OH
FB: Mike Marrow OH
WR: Je'Ron Stokes PA
WR: Chris Fields OH
WR/TE: Dion Sims MI
OL: Ricky Harris OH
OL: Marcus Hall OH
OL: Leon Hill IL
DL: John Simon OH
DL: Corey Adams AZ
DL: Jack Lippert PA
LB: Storm Klein OH
LB: Jordan Whiting KY
LB: Julius Ferrell OH
LB: Dorian Bell PA
DB/ATH: Darrell Mason OH
DB: Darrell Givens MD
DB: CJ Barnett OH
ATH: Quanthony Fletcher FL
- Plus, I can't wait to see the interest we get down in Florida after some more names start to pop up after this year's success.

Great read and I can't say I disagree with much on there. I definetly am on board with you on Toussaint...I think he is going to blow up at camps and combines, should he go. He is an absolute burner you make room for. We have some big name guys that are intriguing that I would like to see where we are at with like Shrive, Stokes, and Sheppard. Tyrik Rollison. the dual threat QB from Texas is one you might also want to keep an eye on, though I doubt we get too much of a look with Pryor coming in. Also, we have 2 DB's with Howard and Domicone but I wouldn't count out Harris yet. I still think he is a Cane but I'm holding out the slightest of hope. In any event, good work as usual CB40.

Consider me an "under rock dwellar," what's up with Torrence?

You probably haven't see it posted, but we have addressed this a number of times...it's not going to be discuss here until the issues have been made public...until then, look elsewhere for your answers.

I for one really like Stadelmyer...6-1 and runs a 4.46...I think the staff will want to see some senior film to see how he progesses. No doubt he is a combine warrior and has put up some great numbers (2,800+ yards last season) but I don't know if he will get an offer from OSU. I could see him playing at somewhere like Indiana or OU...

Yeah I thought about putting Rollison on here, but then I really thought that if we were going to go after a QB it would be someone more in the area, and if we were looking to Texas it would be to go after Sheppard...

Not hopeful on Harris, I think he likes the program and all, but have always seen him as being a Cane...

Understandable on both and I think Rollison is a bit overrated in the first place. He is a good player but his running ability is nowhere near as impressive as Sheppard's and his arm strength is questionable. Besides, I believe we are pursuing Newton and Payne first. I still would love to see us pursue Sheppard as an athlete though.

I can understand where your coming from on Harris...I like our odds right now but after the visit to UM, I'm not so sure we get him.
