Future looks bright as OSU returns 17 starters

Tedd Ginn Jr. is the top returner for Ohio State.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Ohio State football fans would feel a lot better if Ted Ginn Jr. were an NCAA investigator and not just one of the fastest and most dangerous college players in cleats today.

Despite predictions of gloom and doom for a Buckeye program beset by off-the-field problems, Ginn forecasts sunny skies for 2005.

"We should have a great team next year," the fabulous freshman said shortly after OSU capped an 8-4 season with a 33-7 rout of Oklahoma State in Wednesday's Alamo Bowl. "We've just got to go back in the weight room and then go on the field and do what we didn't do this year."

After a three-game slide in the middle of the season, there wasn't much the Buckeyes didn't do right on the field. They won five of their last six games, outscored Michigan and Oklahoma State 70-28 to finish the season and all but guaranteed themselves of a final Top 20 ranking after disappearing from the polls for five weeks.

Seventeen of 22 starters will return from a team that took its cue from Ginn and amassed 1,079 yards over its last 10 quarters, beginning with a second-half rally that just fell short in a 24-17 loss at Purdue.

Speed became the Buckeyes' calling card down the stretch, with coach Jim Tressel taking the shackles off the offense and playing to the strength -- escapability -- of Ginn, wide receivers Tony Gonzalez and Santonio Holmes and quarterback Troy Smith, who went from immortal against Michigan to ineligible for the bowl game for breaking NCAA rules.

"There's a lot of kids here who run track here or have that potential and a lot of speed," said Ginn, a national champion high school hurdler and Olympic prospect. "You don't have to go to Florida to see it."

The impact Ginn's speed made in the Alamo Bowl was evident beyond his six catches for 78 yards, his 40 yards rushing and the five-yard touchdown he scored while lined up at quarterback.

Ginn was indirectly responsible for Ohio State's first touchdown -- a 23-yard pass to Tony Gonzalez from Justin Zwick on the third play from scrimmage.

"I was actually expecting to throw the ball to Ted," said Zwick, playing for the first time since he started the first six games, "but they were very cautious of where Ted was. So they jumped him and Tony ran a great route and made a great play."

Cowboys punter Cole Farden was so rattled by the threat of Ginn adding to his collection of four punt return TDs that his first kick traveled 17 yards, setting up a field goal that boosted Ohio State's lead to 10-0 early in the first quarter.

On that same drive, a pass interference call in the end zone prevented Ginn from making a 41-yard scoring catch.

Watching Ginn at work has convinced Tressel he is doing the right thing by giving his players the green light to run track for the Buckeyes.

"Our track team has some guys who can go," Tressel said. "Lining up against them everyday is good for speedwork. Anytime a guy can compete, we're for that.

"The strength and explosiveness it takes to run the higher hurdles in college will be great for Teddy. A guy like Santonio, it wouldn't hurt him to work on that."

Smith, like Ginn, had much to do with Ohio State's late-season transformation. Taking over for an injured Zwick, Smith led the Buckeyes to a 4-1 record, passing for 791 yards, rushing for 325 yards and accounting for eight touchdowns.

Smith wasn't nearly as elusive off the field. He got caught taking money from an Ohio State booster, resulting in a suspension that is expected to include next year's season opener against Miami of Ohio.

Smith's transgression, coupled with bowl-week charges of lewd behavior against wide receiver Albert Dukes, are the latest in a series of incidents that give the perception of Tressel and embattled athletics director Andy Geiger presiding over the Columbus chapter of Camp Run Amok.

In light of Smith's suspension, the NCAA is expected to turn up the heat in its ongoing investigation of program improprieties alleged by former tailback Maurice Clarettt.

That might explain the cryptic message Tressel delivered within his look to the future after the bowl win.

"We're going to have difficulties and challenges," he said. "I think we have the kind of people (coming back) who can handle those challenges. A game like this (Alamo Bowl) means you are a step closer to realizing that."

In addition to a tarnished reputation, the 2005 Buckeyes will have to overcome the departure of two-time All-America kicker Mike Nugent. The Groza Award winner converted all four of his field goal attempts in the Alamo Bowl, making him 65 of 74 over the last three seasons, including eight of nine from beyond 50 yards.

The only losses on defense are end Simon Fraser and cornerback Dustin Fox. Fraser was the Alamo's defensive MVP, but that honor said less about him (he had three tackles) and more about the balanced effort that night and potential for the future.

A.J. Hawk flashed his All-America formas the Buckeyes held Verand Morency, the nation's eighth-leading rusher, to 20 yards on eight carries. Cornerback Ashton Youboty broke up three passes, linebacker Bobby Carpenter made a TD-paving interception on the game's third play, tackle Joel Penton recovered a fumble that led to another score and safety Donte Whitner, just a few weeks removed from arthroscopic knee surgery, led the Buckeyes with eight tackles. "There's no secret," said Tressel, a combined 6-2 against Michigan and bowl opponents compared to predecessor John Cooper's abysmal 5-18-1 mark. "Our guys keep working hard. When we do well, we still evaulate ourselves, so we don't get too excited. When we don't do well, we're not afraid to look in the mirror and say we have to do things better. "Our guys do a pretty good job of studying what it takes to win. Our guys keep the shovel to the ground and keep digging."

Strength & Speed

It is a *od-*amn shame that Tress has no clue about Strength & Speed Development, and even a worse shame that his staff does not know.

I am glad to see Ted Ginn, Jr. run track, and I hope the rest of the team follows suit. This is the only way that their physical abilities will be refined going forward with this staff.

Go Bucks!

haha, yeah that's true. Maybe we can just keep a document of all of the most ridiculous posts from those other sites (BN, ESPiN...) and use them when people make less ridiculous but annoying posts, and then either replace their posts or post again for them.

Or we can just do what you said, and replace it with a quip from the Mr. Teapot random quote generator...

IMO, we have the toughest schedule in the league. Texas is by far the toughest non-conference opponent, and at Minn, at PSU, at scUM is as tough as any road shedule in the league. If the offense can perform at the level of the Alamo Bowl consistently-not an unreasonable request,IMO, we can run the table.

Let's just thank our lucky stars that we don't have to deal with Wisconsin or Purdue this year. Wisky should be down this year, but they have been our daddy's for too long now. I'd much rather play texas at home than wisky anywhere.

hey BFS....think you could do up a nice schedule that I can print out and put on my wall here at work? i usually find some crappy looking one and write all over it.

ill pay you all the vCash i have
That idea is music to my ears, green chiclet to you :) (you know you're obsessed when you get ecstatic over a request to put in a lot of hours on another graphic design project)

Yeah, I'll start thinking about what I want to do for that project. And unlike everything else, this is a project that I could probably do in the meantime (as opposed to my itching desire to work Wells, O'Neal, Lenix into a piece of work)
