Chad Johnson (official thread)

Well Marvin did draft Leon Hall..

Leon Hall had a good year. But that's the problem with Bengal draft picks. They all look promising in year 1 (Hall, JJ, Thurman, Bustin Smith, Madeau Williams) and instead of getting coached up, they get "bengaled" by incompetent position coaches and end up being mediocre or average NFL players by year 3.

The national media can babble about Johnson all they want, but the real reason this team struggles has nothing at all to do with him - it's Moronic Marv's inability to fix the defense, 5 years running.

Are you a pessemist because you're a bengals fan, or are you a bengals fan because you're a pessemist?

:p

Justin Smith just isn't going to be great pro bowl caliber DE, solid number 2 DE but not deserving of the coin he's getting. Thurman was good when he actually played. Leon Hall is terrible.

I know this is getting away from Chad, but you have to admit the defense was plagued by injury. Give me Pollack, Jeanty, and Brooks.. throw in Thurman, and you've got some playmaking linebackers. Maybe unproven, but lots of potentail. Let Erik Henderson come off the edge. When you are consistently playing Corey Mays, Dahani Jones, Anthony Schlagel, and the other people I can't even keep up with, what do you expect? They can't make other teams, but start for the Bengals due to injury. The front 4 aren't really even average, so you have no pass rush, and no ability to blitz. It would take a defensive backfield full of Champ Bailey's to defend the pass. You start dropping 7 to help, and then find yourself giving up 5 yds. per carry. Next year I'm excited about the potential of having healthy linebacker corps and maybe big Vern coming off the edge. Get the defense off the field, Chad back on it, and maybe we can keep him happy. WHO DEY!

I'll agree to this "Leon Hall had a statistically good year."

Of course Statistics don't count the times he was beaten on pass routes leading to scores - which did happen at inopportune moments on a regular basis. From NFL.com

attachment.php

12 pass break-ups, 5 interceptions, 68 tackles.

What about the other side of the coin?

From SI.com - November 7th.

Cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall, first-round picks the last two years, have been torched on a regular basis. Most recently Joseph was abused for 165 yards by Bills receiver Lee Evans. They're capable of one day becoming a good set of corners, but right now -- on this team, with such putrid pass pressure -- they're in over their heads.

And therein lies the other side of the problem for the Bengals - Hall is likely capable of doing better (as is Jospeh) if the rest of the Defense is also raised from it's current level of malaise.

Ocho Cinco: 'I'm in love with Belichick'

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson continues to shower the New England Patriots organization with praise.
Colleague Mike Reiss wrote in Thursday's edition of the Globe's Super Bowl Insider how Johnson joked to a Boston reporter, "I'm going to be playing for your team next year," before putting his hands together as if praying and looked to the heavens.
We caught up with Johnson at Madden Bowl XIV Thursday night in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he continued to compliment the Patriots, paticularly coach Bill Belichick.
"I'm in love with Belichick," he said.
"We hit it off since we met. I think our first time meeting was down in Hawaii (for the 2007 Pro Bowl)... I have a lot of respect for him. Not because of what he's done with that ball club, but for what I've learned from him in our own personal conversations, on and off the field."

Dispatch

As Chad Johnson continues to try to talk his way out of Cincinnati, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that it would take an $8 million hit against the salary cap if the Bengals trade or release the receiver before next season. The amount is based on Johnson's signing bonus and previously paid incentives, which are prorated against the cap as long as the player is under contract with the team.

Moody Johnson faces uncertain future

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports
February 8, 2008

KO OLINA, Hawaii ? Chad Johnson alternates between charming, petulant, funny and selfish as quickly as waves hit the sand at this beachside resort where the NFL's finest have gathered for the annual Pro Bowl.

One minute, he sounds as if he's open to staying with the Cincinnati Bengals. The next, Johnson insinuates that he needs a change of scenery. Even more, the Pro Bowl wide receiver insists that he is not a problem child, but a misunderstood individual who just wants to win.
"Me? Controversy? Please," said Johnson, whose AFC squad takes on the NFC in Sunday's Pro Bowl. "I do one thing: I show up on Sunday and make plays." Johnson made plenty of those this past season, producing a career-high 1,440 yards on 93 catches with eight touchdowns. But since Cincinnati's disappointing 7-9 has come to a close, there's been all kind of buzz surrounding his future.

News - Monk speaks - Cincinnati Bengals

But it turns out the Anti-Chad is a big Chad Johnson fan and he'll gently remind you that even he once belonged to a celebrated and celebrating fraternity known as "The Fun Bunch."

"Chad is a great guy. I like him. How do I explain it?" Monk said. "Yes, he talks and, yes, he's kind of out there. But it's not really about him. he's having fun and that's really what the game is all about. Having fun. Encouraging each other."
