Notre Dame's highest-paid coach is Charlie Weis

The sting of the Charlie Weis era can still be felt in South Bend. Notre Dame paid football coach Brian Kelly more than $600,000 in bonuses during the 2012 calendar year, according to the university's new federal tax return, which for the first time also listed a Fighting Irish football assistant coach from that year as one of the school's highest-paid employees. ... [Weis] continues to receive more money from the school than any current athletics employee. Weis received nearly $2.1 million in 2012 as part of an ongoing separation agreement that, according to the return, includes additional annual payments through December 2015. Weis became Kansas' head coach in December 2011, and he made another $2.5 million from KU for the 2012 season.

Yeah, Kevin White was a dumb ass. Weis already had a pretty large buyout. The very first year he almost beats USC and the NFL buzz starts to happen. White caved to pressure and gives Weis a ridiculous contract, then high tails it to Duke a few years later. Still, Weis probably has a partial hand in some of Kelly's early success, he did a decent job not leaving the cupboard bare. He brought in a lot of highly recruited kids, he just did a horrible job developing many of them, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

He was a great recruiter, even after most of the country had recognized he was a coaching fraud he still reeled in four and five star studs. I remember domers crowing about winning the recruiting NC every year. Problem with Weis--even more so than his abysmal game day coaching--was that he was comically inept at developing that talent. Tressel used to turn 3* recruits into first rounders. Fat Bastard turned 5*/USA Today All-Americans into second day picks.
