Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

Does he fit in with our current defensive philosophy of giving up easy receptions and poor tackling? Not sure I like this hire unless he's comfortable with the bend and break defense we have been running.

I don't know much about him, but he seems to be more of a bend an opponent over and break one off in their ass kind of a coach.

Ash's quarters scheme shut down OSU in 2012. He and Fickell's approach fit better. And I would be surprised if Ash made the move without play calling responsibility.
As I said, would be shocked in Ash making a lateral move without getting play calling responsibility. He's done it for years.

What's weird is that Wisconsin people are surprised, and say he plays his guys 10 yards off the line as well. But then you look at his 2 years at UW listed above and they're 4th and 18th in the country. Interesting

I don't care where they play as long as they react to the ball. Sometimes I wonder if our guys know there is a ball... at all.

He's pretty much the polar opposite of everything that has driven us insane the last 2+ seasons...

Definitely encouraged to hear that. I would love to see a defense that is both aggressive and fundamentally sound. Doesn't seem like too much to ask at a program like tOSU where you will have the edge athletically in most games you play, so you should be able to afford some risks that other programs can't.

I like this hire. Never considered him because I didn't think he was a legitimate candidate. OSU just got better defensively today with the additions of Coach Ash and Coach Johnson...they will both bring an intensity and coaching advanced techniques to their respective position groups...and I think Ash will be given the keys to the car, so to speak, when it comes to his role as coordinator.

Even if he does playcalling, the fact that Fickell fits in better with Ash will make things a lot better and more coherent. I always felt Withers's style of defense was far too different than Fickell's to work and Fickell had a hard time trying to call plays that were more geared to what Withers wanted, etc.

Smart football likes it so I like it. Now for the true test to see how hardcore of a Buckeye fan you are---are you going to watch the 61 minute dry erase board x's and o's video of Coach Ash he posted on twitter?
