Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

Yes it is. If he gets canned next year, it likely won't be because of the defense. I've gathered that tOSU people generally think highly of Ash. Anyone care to share thoughts on how you think he'll do at Texas?

Herman's biggest problem is Herman. The arrogant mensa asshole persona only works when you're winning. He's already the de-facto OC at Texas. Not sure anyone outside of his comfort zone (read: sycophant) would want to take over this offense. It has some really good pieces, but sputtered way too often this year. I hope he proves the fanbase wrong, hires a really good OC, and cedes control. Hope in one hand, shit in the other, etc.
Ash turned our secondary around, but most kindergarteners could have improved what Withers had left behind. Ash and Fickell combined for some very solid defenses at OSU. I do not recall any Buckeye fans being disappointed with Ash.

You still have Beck on your offensive staff. LOL

He inherited a woeful defense. Very oklahoma esque, in that there was plenty of talent but they rarely executed at a competent level (at least by OSU standards).

Many were hoping he'd come back to OSU right now, with the giant loss of Jeff Hafley last week (DB coach -> Boston College HC). There was a schematic concern there though that he wouldn't mesh with Mattison's style, and obviously Texas had him lined up and probably gave him more responsibility.

Can you elaborate on the schematic concern? The pessimism around UT football is so bad right now that there's a sizable group of people who keep describing Ash as a "lazy comfort hire," and bringing up what happened at Rutgers as an indication of how crappy he is as a head coach. I read back a few pages on this thread to see what the tOSU reaction was to his dismissal. Anyway, that would be a valid criticism if we'd hired him to be HC, but by any objective measure, Ash was a quality hire for DC. Best? I don't know, but I don't see how anyone can be too negative about having him run your defense. He will be getting a ton of responsibility and autonomy, so you're right there.

I would LOL too if I had no connection to UT. In 2019, Beck/Herman had a returning junior Heisman candidate QB who passed/ran for over 40 td the previous year, 3 excellent receivers, a veteran OL, and above-average running backs. That's usually a recipe for a top 10 offense. The 2019 O wasn't horrible, but it was just as much of a problem as the D.

Beck is a good recruiter though, so maybe Herman makes him TE coach or something.

Fit, not concern. It does not mesh with the existing DC, so it did not go anywhere (without knowing if he liked UT more anyway).

Part of the reason the pre-ash defense was so terrible was because of conflicting schemes.

Ash's 2014 defense was pretty good, and quite good when you compare it with 2013. It humiliated Wisconsin and Oregon. It struggled with Derrick Henry (thanks for taking the ball away Lane!), but was very opportunistic and had some game-changing plays, like the INT by Bell or the pick six by DE Steve Miller.

You aren't hiring a head coach. It would be a dreadful hire to replace Herman.

He was stolen and was missed, but OSU retained their CB coach and the DB tradition continued.

Agreed.

To put it into context, in the CCG vs Sparty, Braxton ran for 142 and Hyde added another 118. That should be enough to comfortably put them away (and they almost won if not for bad playcalls to get a 1st down). But instead Sparty did whatever they wanted, and Josiah Price went uncovered the entire night (just to make sure no one confused their efficiency as the byproduct of their NFL talent at other positions).

A week before that against a 5 loss Michigan team, they put up 526 yards of offense, almost 400 on the ground. They barely survived a 2 pt conversion failure to hold off for the victory.

The secondary was surprisingly weak, especially since they had plenty of talent (and would produce a 1st round CB after that year).

The next year they played far more sound football, implemented rugby style tackling, and overall leapt many levels in terms of maximizing talent. Journeymen like Steve Miller and Curtis Grant took big steps forward to becoming solid role players (as starters).

That defense was just as impactful as the OSU offense, which received more of the fanfare.

The irony here is that he helped Urban get outside of his tendencies and run a more balanced attack. After he left, Urban promoted his rock star OL coach to an ill-advised appointment at offensive coordinator and they wasted the most stacked roster in OSU offensive history.

Braxton Miller and Curtis Samuel were the 5th and 6th options, depending on whether they were even on the field.

Was 2015 really the most stacked roster in tOSU history?

That 1998 team was LOADED. As was 1996. And 1995.

Yes. The 2015 team smashed NFL draft records. 2 top 5 picks, 3 in the top 10, 5 in the top 20, 12 in the first 4 rounds. Also produced arguably the top WR and RB in the NFL. Then you look at the back-ups and what they became and it's pretty clear that roster was stacked.

Ash runs a quarters defense made famous (at least in the Big Ten) by Narduzzi at Michigan State when they were fielding their best teams circa 2013-2015. Narduzzi went to Pitt in 2015 and Michigan State has been hurting since.

Ohio State’s current DC, Greg Mattison, with the blessing of Ryan Day, runs something significantly different.

1984: almost the entire starting lineup made NFL rosters, multiple future All-Pro and Pro Bowl Players, the guy who should have won the Heisman, and one future NFL Hall of Famer. Earl still found a way to go 9-3 with them.

That team had great talent, but it did have significant holes. All four starters in the secondary were freshmen. The DB coach that year, Gary Blackney, went on to become the DC. Neither in 84 nor in any of his other years was the DB play anything to write home about. In fact, it sucked so bad that Dick Fenlon famously (and erroneously) predicted that Chuck Long would throw for a thousand yards against them. Jim Everett certainly torched them, as did many lesser quarterbacks. William White was fine while he was at Ohio State. If he'd had decent coaching and played in a decent scheme we might have seem glimpses of the guy who went on to the NFL career he had.

Worse than the porous secondary though was the defensive line. The Earle Bruce era recruiting was ok at some positions, but it was abysmal on the defensive line. It is a disgrace that Spielman and Pepper Johnson had to play behind that DL.

Chris Ash could very well be a solid hire for UT, or he could be just another bust much like Mike Stoops with OU after he had a long, depressing stint with Arizona.

Chris Ash runs Quarters D (Cover 4/3 Under). You'll see lots of press man at the LOS on the boundry side, bracketing of other teams' No 1 WR, and a mix of zone. Ash ran it at Wisconsin when he was Bielema's DC a decade ago, and it's the same D that Pat Narduzzi ran at Michigan St back when they didn't suck. Urban's offenses typically struggled to score against it, which is why Urban coveted getting a DC to run it in 2014.

Clever call Coach Herman, tie your hottest seat season to your new DC. Knowing that if i remember, didnt UT lose a few top would be starters?

Tom Herman Shakes Up Texas Staff After Disappointing 7–5 Season
DEC 1, 2019
Texas coach Tom Herman shook up his staff Sunday, firing defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and demoting offensive coordinator Tim Beck after the Longhorns struggled to a disappointing 7-5 record in a season they were expected to contend for the Big 12 championship.

The Longhorns began the season ranked in the Top 10 but are now unranked as they await their bowl destination after losing three of their last five games.

Also dismissed was wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Drew Mehringer. Inside receivers coach Corby Meekins will no longer coach but will stay in the program in an administrative role.

Beck will stay on as quarterbacks coach through the bowl game, but his status beyond that was unclear.

Herman said he was “very disappointed” in the season and said that 7-5 “will never be our standard at Texas.”

“I take full responsibility for any and all of our shortcomings and know we need to do a better job coaching across the board,” Herman said. “With that said, I do believe the future is very bright.”

Staff changes were expected. Herman said last week the program was in “full evaluation” mode and signaled several assistants could be let go.

“These were very difficult decisions and certainly not an indictment of them as coaches,” Herman said. “I just believe we need a fresh set of eyes and infusion of new ideas and energy to help us grow across the board.”

Much was expected of Texas this season after a 10-4 finish in 2018 that included a dominant victory over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

The University of Texas is the flagship school in a very talent rich football state. Second place is not acceptable at UT and Herman was and still is on the proverbial "hot seat". Last December he saved his job (at least temporarily) by firing several assistant coaches including the DC (i.e. he threw several assistants under the bus to save his ass).

Chris Ash 'is the best there is in the country'

You really wouldn't expect him to say anything else.
