Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

CHRIS HOLTMANN, OHIO STATE ASSISTANT COACHES EARN EXCEEDINGLY POSITIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

Ohio State entered the 2017-18 season without many expectations. The program had just missed the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, and Gene Smith decided to move on from Thad Matta.

In came Chris Holtmann, who was fresh off his third straight NCAA tournament appearance. Led by the first-year coach, the Buckeyes blew their preseason critics away. They went 25-9, finished second in the Big Ten and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Unsurprisingly, performance reviews of Holtmann and his three assistant coaches – Ryan Pedon, Terry Johnson and Mike Schrage – were overwhelmingly positive. Eleven Warriorsobtained the evaluations on Friday through a public records request.

“Chris made the most amazing transition into OSU on all levels,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith wrote in Holtmann’s review. “Integrations into the Buckeye culture of the department. Interacting with fans and supporters of the program was excellent! Embracing former players and building the trust of the players he had to lead represented exemplar performance. Creating a culture of competing at the highest level in the classroom and on the court!”

Holtmann was given an overall rating of “exceeds expectations” by Smith in the undated review that was completed before June 29.

Gene Smith's handwriting may be crap (above)...; however, he did hit a "home run" on the Holtmann hire.

From the Penthouse to the outhouse
That's a little reactionary. This year's team simply isn't very good. Matta's last couple classes were largely disasters, and we're feeling it now. Hell, he took essentially the same team that got run by Rutgers in the B1G tournament and got them to 25 wins. Next year sees an influx of much needed talent. I suspect we'll be pretty formidable.

Coach Holt is now 3-0 vs Archie Miller at IU, and 2 of the 3 games have been in Bloomington.
This year's team has a lot of issues and I'm not thrilled with how a couple of guys have developed since last year, but I'm confident we ended up with the better coach.

Need to spend this offseason teaching Kaleb how not to commit so many dumb fouls every single game. And maybe teach Jallow how to play a little offense.

Well let's be honest, you're not going to hire a Tom Izzo or Bo Ryan most of the time. Holt could maybe do a much better job in coaching the fundamentals, but overall he has had a very positive impact and has clearly done better coaching OSU than Archie has done with IU.

In the grand scheme of things, without a coaching change, this year's team probably would have been NIT at best. They are still being held back by some down recruiting classes and transfers. This season was supposed to be one of the biggest down years that Holt would have at OSU. If he can get to 20 wins with this team, despite playing 11 games versus teams currently in the top-25, it should go down as a very good coaching job.

No offense to Justin but I thought that Holtmann could have given a much better response to the question of why he played Justin so much during the Northwestern game. I think the majority of the guys that are on the bench are "engaged" in the game and hope that their teammates perform well. Just thought that this was a poor response. I think he should have said he earned it in practice and was ready to play. Just my opinion.

“I had been thinking about potentially even starting him this game and I just felt like he was really engaged on the bench in the first half,” Holtmann said. “When you’re a coach and you see a guy who hasn’t played a whole lot and he’s engaged in the game what he’s telling you is ‘Hey I’m fully invested in what we’re doing right now’ and when it’s February, you want dudes who are fully invested in what you’re doing.

“You want guys who are fully invested in the growth of the team. If you’re not fully invested, then I’m probably not going to give you a nod there and he is and that’s why he got the nod and he responded well.”

Maybe sending a not so subtle message to those that are not "fully invested in what you're doing".

Like, what’s a guy to do with that group? Last season gave a lot of false hope in regards to just a snap of a finger and all is well. Luckily, better days are not all that far off.

So let’s fire Holtmann!
