Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

If you consider the circumstances and context of what I'm about to post, it's not as bad as it looks, but still, not the most encouraging stat ever.

From Steve Helwagen:

"In two seasons, OSU is 3-10 against ranked teams under Holtmann. In eight seasons as a head coach, Holtmann’s teams are a combined 16-25 against ranked teams."
OSU has had a poor record vs top-25 teams for the last several seasons now, the last year when they were decent was 2013. The one constant on every team since then has been a lack of teams with multiple talented scorers on the same squad. I would expect a rebuilding team with no player who has a prayer of making the NBA to fare poorly vs top-25 opponents.

I think the reality is the talent overall at OSU is very similar to the best teams in the B1G, the only difference is teams like Nebraska, Purdue, and UW have a better star player.

I think this season's end is harder to accept because they started off playing better than expected. OSU probably beats Wisconsin today if Kaleb doesnt get himself suspended, and lock themselves in the tournament - not sure Holt is the person to blame there.

so minus kaleb, winston, carsen, happ, the nazi, etc., it was your belief prior to the season that osu's talent would match the other teams?
Star players make all the difference in the world in college basketball. Did Coach K suddenly become a bad coach after Zion sprained his knee? If you are so interested in such small sample sizes, you could make a pretty compelling argument against Coach K this year.

you didn't answer the question. so, again, i'll ask...

perhaps i should remind you, dz, that before the season started, no one else here set higher expectations than you did. so it's a bit odd to read now that our middling season was a foregone conclusion due to the obvious talent drain when you assumed before the season started that we'd get at least a 9-seed in the tournament.

If they had Winston or Edwards, and Kaleb didnt get suspended, then yes they could have been near the top of the B1G this season. I guess I am an optimist by default, but they could still have gotten a 9 seed if Kaleb hadn't gotten suspended.
