Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Ohio State beats Indiana, and the Buckeyes have the better coach and a brighter future: Doug Lesmerises
Thursday, Holtmann wore two pairs of pants on the sideline at the United Center in Chicago.

His own, and the pair he had coached off of Mille

Indiana has a lottery pick freshman in Romeo Langford and a veteran star in Juwan Morgan. This was the season for the Hoosiers to rise up, the way Ohio State did in Holtmann’s first season when the Buckeyes finished second in the Big Ten.
Holtmann had more to work with last year. And Ohio State won 25 games while Indiana won 16. Miller had more to work with this year. And Ohio State has 19 wins and Indiana has 17.
Miller’s biggest recruit, Langford, was on the court Thursday and may be done in Bloomington. Holtmann’s biggest recruit, D.J. Carton, is arriving next season to run the offense. Indiana next season is bringing in the No. 18 and No. 155 recruits in the nation. Ohio State is bringing in the No. 28, No. 42 and No. 45 recruits in the nation.

Ho!tmann took some lumps and showed some warts this season, but he still coaches a marginally talented roster to the NCAA tournament, making him 2/2 after tOSU missed two straight. It hasn't been pretty, but a lot of people said going intp this season that reaching the dance would make it a success. And here we are.

I'm not gonna judge too harshly based on this season and I'm anxious to see what he can do with next years class along with some of the young guys that showed flashes at various points this season. Plus, C.J. Walker coming on to provide a steady vet presence.

just imagine how great ho1tmann will be when he learns how to coach the end of games. 8D

seriously, though, outstanding job. some minor quibbles that at time felt like major quibbles, but i couldn't be happier. really impressive gameplan, especially from the standpoint of defense and tempo. a+++ at denying isu transition opportunities.
Ho!tmann will always be compared to the legend he replaced. It's an unenviable position to be in and a very difficult legacy to follow. But hopefully fans see that it's a totally different sport than it was 13-14 years ago when Thad took over.

My twenty cent analysis through 2 seasons...

Hol!tmann is a superior game planner.
Matta had an edge drawing up specific plays at end of game situations
Ho!tmann has a slight edge managing rotations (I give him a bit of a pass this year because of an oddly constructed roster partially due to the end of the Matta era)
Matta has a slight edge recruiting-wise, but again, recruiting is a different animal now than when Thad was reeling in the "Thad-5"

This is only year two for Ho!tman, so a lot could change of the next couple of years. But, despite the ups and downs this year, I still think we're in very good hands going forward. The win over Iowa State just reinforced that for me.

Matta was a superior recruiter going strictly by the numbers, but he had no clue how to develop team chemistry. The last 7 years were increasingly dysfunctional.

I think the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 teams had exceptional chemistry, then you had a Final 4 team, then you had a team that was headed down the toilet and Thad really turned them around--all the way around to a 2-seed and Elite 8.

After that it was more a lack of sufficient offensive talent and poor post play. But yeah the last two teams were bad on all levels, including chemistry.

Holt has been approaching building this program exactly how he should, build the depth, get versatility of talent and grit and win with a less aesthetic brand of basketball since the star talent had dried up in the last few years. Then get the stars and take it to the next level.

Matta was great at building around star players, his system catered to star talent as well as any in the country, but in-state talent dropped and there are so many cheating coaches paying off the top talent anymore that top recruits stopped coming to OSU (including a couple of recruiting losses to Coach K on guys that would have been perfect fits and could have stayed midwest with OSU) and the program gradually declined year after year as the talent dwindled. Almost have no choice to try and win unless you have the Holt strategy when there aren't many high-ceiling in-state prospects.
