Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Ohio State men’s basketball: Expectations ramping up for Chris Holtmann’s third season

Chris Holtmann hadn’t been Ohio State’s men’s basketball coach long when he popped into a Barnes & Noble near his Upper Arlington home. The Buckeyes, reeling from a season that saw them miss out on the NCAA and NIT tournaments, weren’t expected to do much in Holtmann’s first season.

Staring him in the face was a full-color reminder. The cover of Athlon Sports’ 2017-18 preview magazine featured Indiana’s Robert Johnson on its cover and a headline reading, “It’s Miller’s Time at Indiana,” a reference to newly hired coach Archie Miller.

“In Columbus, in my neighborhood, the college basketball preview comes out and it has a team in our league that was at that time not even picked to finish in the top four or five, but (still) none of our players were on the cover,” Holtmann said. “They had a team from our league’s player on the cover. I thought, to me, that was a significant statement about how relevant our program was at the time.”

The Hoosiers, picked ninth in the magazine, drew the cover ahead of the Buckeyes, who were picked 12th with the explanation: “Chris Holtmann left more talent at Butler than he inherits at OSU.”

Clearly expectations were low. But two seasons later, Holtmann and the Buckeyes will enter the offseason with drastically different projections. After consecutive NCAA Tournament experiences while navigating a hole blown in the roster thanks to the disappearance of the five-man 2015 recruiting class, Holtmann has a core group of experienced players that includes just one senior and will combine with a top-10 recruiting class.

The national expectations have raised correspondingly. With rosters in flux as players test their NBA draft stock, the Buckeyes are widely projected as a preseason top-25 team next season. Although Holtmann dismissed the concept of rankings in April — ”(they exist) so people can click on them,” he said — the thought of higher expectations isn’t something the coach is shying away from.

“Well, I went back and checked last year and C.J. Jackson was on the cover,” he said, before deadpanning, “I felt good. Got warm and fuzzy inside.”.....

Near the end, Holtmann was asked when he would bring Ohio State a national championship. The Buckeyes have won just won, and it came in 1960.

“That’s the only thing I’m obsessed with every day,” he said. “I understand it’s really, really hard to do. I would like nothing more than to bring that to this fan base. We’ve got some work to do, but I think we’re moving.”

...

The 2019 USA Basketball Men’s U19 National Team training camp, which will be used to select the roster for the 2019 USA Men’s U19 National Team, will take place June 15-17 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

...

Holtmann will undertake his first USA Basketball assignment and will enter his third season as the head coach for Ohio State University. In his eight seasons as a head coach, he has compiled a 159-109 (.593) overall record.

“Representing USA Basketball and working with some of our country’s best young players is an honor and privilege,” Holtmann said. “USA Basketball has assembled a tremendous coaching staff and I look forward to working alongside them and helping in any way.”

In 2018-19, the Buckeyes finished 20-15, marking the sixth-consecutive season teams under Holtmann have won 20 or more games.

In his 2017-18 debut season at Ohio State, Holtmann was named 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Buckeyes to a 25-9 overall record, a No. 2 finish in the Big Ten regular season standings and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to OSU, Holtmann was the head coach at Butler University from 2014-15 to 2016-17, and Gardner-Webb University from 2010-11 to 2012-13. While at Butler, Holtmann was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2017 and led Butler to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons.

SKULL SESSION: LOOKING AT JULIAN FLEMINGS FILM, CHRIS HOLTMANN IS UNDERRATED, AND OHIO STATE'S BEST TRADITIO

UNDER-RATED *CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP CLAP CLAP*.
I remember how terrified I was when the Buckeyes were looking for a new head basketball coach in the middle of the summer. I thought it was going to be a disaster and that every good option had already landed somewhere else (namely, Archie Miller).

But as we've since grown accustomed in these here Skull Sessions, I was an idiot who was wrong. The Buckeyes ended up getting the best-possible guy for the job, and two years in, fans probably don't appreciate him as much as they should.

In fact, Myron Medcalf of ESPN has Chris Holtmann as the No. 6 most under-appreciated head coach in the country.

6. Chris Holtmann: Since accepting the Ohio State job in the summer of 2017 following Thad Matta's dismissal, Holtmann has won 45 games and finished within the top 25 in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency rankings in both seasons. Last season, he ended a challenging 2018-19 -- top players CJ Walker (shoulder injury) and Kaleb Wesson (suspension for violating athletic department policy) missed a total of four key games down the stretch -- with a win over Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was his sixth consecutive 20-win season, a streak dating to his final season at Gardner-Webb in 2013. Though the Ohio State football shadow trumps anything that happens on campus, Holtmann is off to an impressive start. And with next year's incoming fleet of talent, Ohio State should be a top-25 team again.

I think the hardcore Buckeye fans genuinely do appreciate the hell out of him, and the casuals only see results, which haven't happened yet. But they will come around when the deep tournament runs inevitably come, sooner than later.

BASKETBALL: HOLTMANN UPDATES INJURIES, TALKS SCHEDULE

IMG_5881-27gdmyt-530x353.jpg

Basketball season is over two months away, but head coach Chris Holtmann is already breaking down what his team needs to improve upon before they tip off Oct. 30 against Cedarville.

“When you have a young group, no assumptions can be made on what they may or may not know,” Holtmann said. “How we want to do things, our expectations, it just can’t be said enough.”

A major theme for the Buckeyes this season will be their inexperience.

Several starters return from 2018, including junior forward and scoring leader Kaleb Wesson. However, with a trio of four-star prospects from 2019 and two transfers from other schools, new faces will fill key roles for the Buckeyes this season.

As the summer draws to a close, Holtmann hopes to get those new faces in the groove.

“Overall, [we’re] just ready for this month-and-a-half grind here before practice gets rolling,” Holtmann said. “The summer is so important because you’re trying to set the tone with your young guys.”

The fresh talent will be tested early, with marquee nonconference matchups against Cincinnati, Villanova, North Carolina and Kentucky — all of which finished the 2018-2019 season receiving votes in the AP poll. Kentucky and North Carolina both finished in the top 10.

It’s no wonder that on Wednesday, Holtmann called this schedule the most challenging he’s dealt with as a coach. Experience should come for the freshmen in short order.

Holtmann also took time to detail his team’s health status.

Sophomore forward Justin Ahrens dealt with a back injury over the summer and missed significant off-season workout time as a result. Junior guard Musa Jallow has also been limited due to swelling in his ankles from an unknown cause.

“Justin’s still coming back and still limited in what he can do right now,” Holtmann said. “He’s lost some weight so we’re monitoring that pretty closely.”
