Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

not posting this with any intent in mind. just curious how it looks when all grouped together.

players who have committed to and played for ho1tmann:

young - major role
jallow - medium role
ledee - transfer
washington - major role
muhammad - transfer
ahrens - minor role
diallo - no role yet
carton - transfer
gaffney - transfer
liddell - major role

10 committed recruits. 4 transfers. 4 players with medium/major roles.

certainly wouldn't label carton or muhammad as "misses." as such, ho1tmann's so-called hit rate of recruits developing into players with medium/major roles would be 6/10. not sure how that stacks up against ho1tmann's peer group, but my guess is that 60% is close to standard.

the remaining 4 players are ahrens, diallo, gaffney, and ledee. it's questionable whether any particular player proves to be at least a moderate producer in college.

CJ Walker doesn't count? Since Carton left because Walker is a hit, I would think a fair analysis wouldn't overlook him. Keyshawn Woods? I probably would overlook Andrew Dakich if I was making a list myself. Three of the better players on the team next season are transfers, so it is a very incomplete analysis to leave those guys who transfer to OSU off a list. Clearly Holt plans to have collegiate transfers bringing experience every season, that is a constant we have seen and I think it is by design.

I get it, your list is of past players, but clearly the coach's strategy is not solely to rely on high school recruits, in fact some team leaders are coming from the transfer ranks, so your breakdown is missing something important.

first, where did i say that i was making a fully exhaustive list? if you want to make your own list, then make your own damn list. lord knows the board needs some content during this long, dead period. perhaps you'll get your own "well ackshually" pedant to respond.

second, transfers are not at all recruited like high school players. that's partly why i didn't list them. i'm not comparing a high school player you recruit for 4 months to a year or more to a college player you recruit for a month or possibly just a week. recruiting sotos took just a couple days. completely different scenarios.

third, if you're a head coach who gets to watch a college player play a season or two of college ball before you decide to recruit him, your hit rate better be high. damn high. much higher compared to the hit rate for conventional high school players. why would justice sueing be compared to ibrahima diallo?

finally, everyone and his brother have obviously noticed that our teams lean on transfers. perhaps we have leaned on them so much that they've formed a wholly separate group that could be compared only against themselves.

i have doubts whether porter will shoulder a major role, but i'm confident that sueing, towns, and sotos will. that would make 6 out of 7 ("hit rate"). heck, if porter has a medium role, that would make it 7 out of 7 based on my previous post's standard. compare that to a probable 6 out of 10 for ho1tmann's conventional recruits. that difference is another reason why i didn't consider transfers in the quote you disagree so much with.

To me it says (maybe) Holt doesn't connect with the younger guys the way he does older transfers

In accepting the All-In Challenge, Holtmann will raise money for Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, World Central Kitchen and No Kid Hungry in order to help provide food for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He's auctioning off a game-day experience that includes a meal with Holtmann and the staff, locker room and shootaround access, tickets to a game and an autographed basketball.

From the Fanatics posting:

Attention, Buckeyes fans: the Ohio State Men's Basketball team is inviting you and a guest to Columbus for an exclusive game day experience. Dine with Coach Holtmann and team staff the night before the game and head to the Value City Arena in the Jerome Schottenstein Center the next day for a behind-the-scenes tour of both the arena and practice facility. You'll even have locker room access before and after the day's game and get to spend some time on the court for a shootaround with the team. Claim two seats for the game and, when the final buzzer sounds, head home in high spirits with a basketball autographed by Coach Holtmann. 100% of the money raised through this Game/Auction will go directly to Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, World Central Kitchen and No Kid Hungry.

The opening bid is $3,500. Stevens raised $150,000 with his challenge, which included an all-access game-day experience package and a basketball signed by the entire team.

Holtmann, Ryan Day and Gene Smith teamed up to collectively donate $175,000 to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund in April.

Dude is a damn good coach.

He’s got his team playing tough and playing TOGETHER. This 2021 squad lacks any superstars yet they have 6-7 guys that can get double digits on any night.

You can watch how they play that they are very well coached.

This guy was a home run hire. Just wait to see what he does with higher and higher end talent.

Don’t worry. When the Buckeyes lose a couple of games down the stretch, and they most certainly will with the schedule coming up, we’ll be questioning him.

I wouldn't be so sure about losing too many games down the stretch. Starting to have role players get comfortable in their roles. Another positive for Coach Holtmanns job done this year in my opinion

Iowa and, ugh, scUM are just gonna be incredibly difficult match-ups presuming those games get played. Not that I think they are much better teams overall, I just don't like how we match up against them. And plenty of other tough games, too. The B1G is no joke and it is relentless in terms of teams that can beat you.

But even if we lose a few more games in conference, I hope it won't mean a lot of unhappiness or complaining (though who am I kidding, the complainers are with us always). I think right now we are having a pretty good season considering all the health/injury issues and only two T100 guys on the roster. And I do think the future is bright.

My comment had more to do with the brutal schedule coming. The only game left that’s close to a gimme is probably at Penn State, and we know how that went the first time.
