We won our homecoming game that year 139-36. The work ethic of the team will be unparalleled. Plus, he's a psych major, so he'll know how to get in the kids' heads.

That is all good to hear but with the hand that he has been dealt for this season and probably for a few more seasons, I do not think that conditioning and psychology are going to help much. We need some players and we need them bad. Hopefully, he can break out his psychology forte when recruiting.

this is partly why the big ten just doesn't have enough to produce consistent title winners/contenders. look at the list. save for brey and few, it's composed of either big ten coaches or coaches with big ten histories. to win at the highest level, it's almost a necessity to get in dirty with the aau, which is worse than the college football recruiting scene. in some ways, i completely understand how and why matta's recruiting leveled off. losing bazley, for example, was a foregone conclusion.

Yep. I think his disgust with the seedy underbelly of the whole AAU scene played a big part in him burning out. Couple that with chronic back issues, and it's a recipe for a rapid descent.

The best way to challenge the AAU factories like Duke, UNC, Kentucky, et al for the crown is to have a coach with a solid system that doesn't have to rely on the one-and-done superstars to challenge those big boys. It doesn't happen often, but Nova did it in 2016, and we've seen a number of those programs make deep tournament runs. I think Holtmann is one of those coaches.

To me the game plan for Chris to lead OSU hoops to a title is to get them to be like MSU and Wisconsin, be a good, consistent program which achieves something (B1G regular season or tourney title or Sweet 16+) at least once every 3 seasons, but having a better local talent pool to rely on and provide stars to put them over the top when the area produces the rare star like Sully.

For some college basketball coaches, playing second fiddle to football at a school like Ohio State could be a turnoff. Chris Holtmann is of a different mindset.

After being hired as the Buckeyes' head basketball coach on June 9, Holtmann acknowledged the fact that Ohio State is without question a football school, something he added did not bother him.

"I love it. Love it. I think it’s great," Holtmann said during his introductory press conference. "I think it adds to this place. I think it was exciting to me, to be quite honest with you."

Having been in Columbus for more than three months now, Holtmann is utilizing some of the best resources Ohio State has to offer. One of those resources? The head football coach.

Since he was hired, Holtmann has had a chance to pick Urban Meyer's brain. He said that one of the biggest takeaways from his meetings with Meyer has been the football coach's passion for Ohio State.

"He has met with a few (basketball) recruits and you get to see him sell this place," Holtmann said at halftime of Ohio State's football game against Oklahoma. "I have enjoyed taking a step back and listen to him communicate how and why this place is so special. I think that can be really helpful.

"He has shared some great information and insight into what makes this place special and what makes a kid choose Ohio State."

So far it appears the Holtmann isn't winning the "recruiting wars". Hopefully he gets some good advice about recruiting (and uses it) from Urban.
