Chris Holtmann (ex-tOSU Bball coach, HC at DePaul)

Men’s basketball: Chris Holtmann building excitement around Ohio State in inaugural season

To say excitement surrounding Ohio State’s men’s basketball team last season was dim would be an understatement.

Despite playing in the 10th-largest home arena in college basketball, Ohio State averaged the 24th-most fans per game last season (12,324) and was only at 64.7 percent capacity throughout the season (106th out of 351). The Schottenstein Center also failed to exceed 70 percent capacity in the 2015-16 season after finishing with 76.9, 86.5 and 86.7 percent in the 2014-15, 2013-14 and 2012-13 seasons, respectively.

First-year head coach Chris Holtmann hopes to return to the years of a packed Schottenstein Center. Though Butler maintained consistent success before Holtmann arrived, the head coach brought a new level of excitement around the program, steadily increasing arena capacity from 81.0 percent his first year to 89.7 percent his second and 91.8 percent his final season.

I thought that they were going to tear down St. John in a couple years if not sooner. I will have to go find that thread:biggrin:
No definite date planned, on the back burner with so many other construction projects going on at OSU. They basically said the demo project, which costs millions, would wait unless a donor ponied up the cash to get it torn down sooner.

CHRIS HOLTMANN BUYS OHIO STATE STUDENTS CANE'S CHICKEN

It's been smooth sailing for new men's basketball coach Chris Holtmann thus far. His team is 2-0 and hosts Texas Southern tomorrow night.

Wednesday, Holtmann put in the yeoman's work required to increase the student culture around the hoops program, which had dwindled in recent years. He spent his lunch hour buying Cane's for students:

Naturally, Buckeye left tackle Jamarco Jones wanted in on the deal:

OSU Director of Compliance Paia LaPalombara confirmed NCAA rules allow Holtmann to purchase a big box combo no slaw extra toast (The One True Cane's Order) at an event open to all students.

He is going to mix and match until he finds a starting lineup that he has comfortable with. Also, not afraid of pulling guys when they do not live up to his expectations.
One thing that's very noticeable about Holtmann (especially when compared to Thad Matta) is that he's not afraid to mix up his starting lineups. He did it again on Saturday, starting C.J. Jackson, Williams, Jae'Sean Tate, Bates-Diop and Wesson against William & Mary. With the way Tate has been used, that's a pseudo three-guard lineup.

Holtmann has said his lineups will be fluid. Injuries have been a factor, but he's been mixing it up, trying to find the right starting and closing lineups, and yanking players in-game if he doesn't like what he's seeing.

Holtmann pulled Bates-Diop early in the first half after some lazy defensive play. That's pulling the best player, just to send a message.

"I wasn't playing well in the first three or four minutes, and he treats us all equally, so he pulled me," Bates-Diop said. "I went back in and picked it up. ... He wanted me to get back on defense. I was jogging back. Their big man got a transition dunk that one time. That's what did it for him. ... I think it helped re-set my mind."
