Cincinnati Bearcats (Juggalos official thread of Faygo)

Hats off to Kelly and UC

Neat little stadium in the middle of a growing campus housing area. Parking is a bitch in the area, but hey, parking at OSU ain't a walk in the park either.

Think of all the negatives UC has had to conquer to get where they are right now: a city funded school until the state took over in the 70's, there were no dorms and thus no campus life. Like Kent State, everyone took off for home on Friday, only at UC home meant somewhere in Cincinnati. Like Kentucky, the history, the fans and the media were interested only in the basketball program. They were never on TV unless they were getting steamrolled by Penn State or Alabama. They couldn't draw any of the local football talent from what is, at worst, the second strongest HS football area in the state. They had to compete for audience with the Bengals and Reds. Hell, Kroger was giving away tickets to their games just to try and get butts in the stands. They changed conferences every decade and MAC kept trying to bring them on board. When they finally signed onto the Big East the basketball fans had a shit hemorrhage because they weren't going to rip off 20 win seasons playing Syracuse instead of North Dakota A & M.

Now the pro teams both suck, the basketball program HAD to get rid of Bob Huggins and the thugs he recruited and the football program took advantage of the situation. I don't blame their fans (most of whom just got on the bandwagon) for mouthing off. I'd rather have them yakking about UC then their default position, Notre Dame.

Cincy has come along way, and it's a development that I generally support in the context of University System of Ohio. It does, however, get a little annoying to hear them take some solid, but not stellar, improvements in the athletic department and the overall university and act like they are, in any manner, challenging Ohio State.

What's interesting to note is that without Rutherford B. Hayes insistence on founding Ohio State, UC would never have come into existence. While there was a rather small sectarian college that can be tenuously argued was the predecessor of UC, what really became UC was a political compromise that Hayes made with Cincy politicians to get Ohio State created, located in Columbus and positioned as the state's flagship campus.

To get them to sign off on this, Hayes supported and signed a bill creating "municipal universities" in cities of over 150K population--at the time only Cincy. This allowed the Cincy community to tap into an unused endowment that they were sitting on and combine a couple of small colleges into the University of Cinicinnati. In effect, UC was the politically compromised afterbirth of Ohio State's founding.

Yeah, but, I'd rather have them yakking about UC than their default position, Notre Dame.

Anybody who thinks "Vision Quest" is one of the all time great sports movies is a complete fuck tard. The day he fellated Matthew Modine for his role in that flick for 3 straight hours was the day I stopped listening.

You got beat up by a wrestler in HS didn't you?

And here we go:

CBS

Ohio's best: No. 13 Buckeyes or No. 14 Bearcats?

CINCINNATI -- While Ohio State fans up in Columbus debate whether their team is the best in the Big Ten, folks down south are asking a much different question three games into the season: Who's the best team in Ohio?

Buckeyes? Or Bearcats?

In years past, it would have been a ludicrous question. But Cincinnati's impressive 3-0 record and Ohio State's spotty 2-1 start have left the two teams nearly dead-even in this week's Top 25 poll. Ohio State is No. 13, followed by Cincinnati.

Bearcats? Or Buckeyes?

"Hey, if we ever have to strap it on with them, we're going to win," Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead said Tuesday, not even flinching when the question was raised.

Head coach Brian Kelly coached at Grand Valley State in Michigan and Central Michigan before coming to Cincinnati, so he knows all about Ohio State's lore and how fans get wrapped up in the program's history. He also knows it stings when a Cincinnati player hears that a fan chose to watch Ohio State lose to Southern California 18-15 on Sept. 12 instead of watching the Bearcats win again on a different TV channel.

"I think as long as you're in the state of Ohio and you're not looked at as an equal or partner, you're going to play with a chip on your shoulder," Kelly said Tuesday. "And I'm not saying we should be looked at as an equal or a partner. But our players sense and feel that every day by who they talk to and who they see at the mall and, 'Did you see the Ohio State-USC game?' 'Yeah, did you see our game?'

"So they're going to carry that [chip], and I'm certainly not going to tell them to change the way they think because as a coach, I kind of like that role that we have."

Pead knows well that his opinion will be anathema to the Buckeye fans who inhabit every corner of the state. He grew up in Columbus, where he topped one of Ohio State's greatest players: Pead broke two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin's career rushing record at Eastmoor Academy, then had to choose between the two schools for college.

Cont'd ...

So are we eligible for the Orange Bowl this year? Or is Cincinnati eligible for the Rose by any chance (similar to how Texas played in the Rose Bowl against Michigan in 04-05)?

Enough of the pleasantries, anyone who really thinks that Cincinnati would line up and beat Ohio State, say I.

Is Pete Carroll coaching the Buckeyes?

Is there any plausible scenario where these teams could play this season? Obviously some bowl match-up, but BCS or otherwise, anyone have ideas on how it could be settled on the field? I'd just like to see both teams play, and keep it out of the media.

I actually thought Brian Kelley's comments were perfect. In that article. He admits that UC is the little brother without saying, but intimates that the goal is not to be. He took no shot at Ohio State. Its hard not to like Brian Kelly.

My understanding is that if Cal goes undefeated and goes to the MNC, and USC isn't attractive enough for the Rose Bowl selection committee, then they can pick an at large team. If this scenario comes to pass I would be more than happy to see Cincinnati take that role.

I agree that Kelly's statements are in line, as a coach I would want my players to stay motivated, much like Brewster's "chip on the shoulder" comments. However, I do tend to believe that if the media were to ask a tOSU player about Cinci, it would be a response like "They are a solid team, they'll be a challenge..." I would think it would come across more classy than what Pead said. It's not wrong for Pead to be motivated to beat Ohio State, and maybe the media baited him, but it makes him sound bitter and arrogant, without having the chance to actually settle it on the field of play. Just respect your opponent, imo he doesn't show that here. If you want to be at that level, you need to act at that level.

A Rose Bowl would be possible, if Cal made it to the BCS Title game. But the Rose would get one of the first two replacement picks, and although they may bypass a 2-loss USC to avoid a tOSU-USC rematch, Cincinnati would be an unlikely choice (unless they were undefeated and BCS #3 or #4). So if tOSU and Cincinnati both ran the table, there's a chance they could meet in Pasadena.

An Orange Bowl matchup is possible if Miami goes to the BCS Title game, and the Orange Bowl gets a replacement pick (they are tied to the ACC Champ unless that team is BCS #1/#2). But it's doubtful they would take a 2-loss tOSU (a 1-loss tOSU would be in the Rose Bowl, possibly the BCS Title game if chaos reigns). The Orange Bowl would love to host tOSU, since it's been over 30 years since the Buckeyes have been there, and they get first choice this year (after the #1 and #2 teams are put into the Title game and the bowls that 'lose' those teams get replacement picks.
