I like this point, however:

Needless to say, I didn't know anything about Ohio State, or Kentucky, or any of that stuff. Like the Beach Boys sang all those years ago: "Be True to YOUR School". So, when I went to Nippert Stadium and sat there with all of 14,000 half-hearted "fans" on a gorgeous Autumn afternoon, I really wondered why two-thirds of my dorm-mates would prefer to sit inside and watch Ohio State on TV. "Why go to UC if you'd rather root fort Ohio State?" was the way I looked at it.

It must suck to be so dispassionate about your own school that you would rather not go to games, instead choosing to watch (and root for) someone else's school on TV. I'm glad I never was, nor will be, in such a position.

The Buckeyes went into the 61 and 62 games ranked #1 in the nation and the top seed of 16 teams - the tournament had not expanded to 32 teams yet.

Jerry Lucas was injured late in the semi-final game of 62 when he was undercut by Len Chappel of Wake Forest. He played the next night with a mild sprain in his knee.

I had Fred Taylor for his basketball course and we managed to get him to talk about the Lucas - Havlicek- Nowell years - his observation was that the 60 team was better because of the other forward - Joe Roberts. Don Devoe, Doug MacDonald and somebody named Bobby Knight tried to fill out the second forward spot, but the drop off in talent there hurt them. Add also that Dick Reisbeck, the other guard in 62, was no Larry Siegfried. As Taylor stated, "Dick thought defense was something that went around de yard."

To provide a baseline for comparison, and based on data from http://www.databasesports.com/ncaab/collegepage.htm?teamid=180 it looks like OSU has three victories over higher seeded teams (hopefully 4 after today). They beat 9 seed Kentucky as an 8 seed in 1987, and 1 seed Auburn and 3 seed St Johns as a 4 seed in 1999. The reason it isn't higher is that OSU is typically a high seed themselves. So typically, OSU had to win at least two or three games just to get an opportunity to beat a higher seed. When they were a 1 seed, obviously they couldn't beat a higher seeded team. Huggins' teams faced a similar challenge through the 90's, although to a lesser extent. Smaller programs like to pull this statistic out because it usually favors them. In short, I think it's a BS statistic.

We would actually go to Nippert and nap on the sun-warmed bleachers during the UC football game after going to Kegs-n-Eggs at Big Reds. That is if the Ohio State game didn't coincide.

I keep thinking tOSU was a 5 seed in '99, not a 4. Anyone else remember it wrong? :lol:

Good thing this policy wasn't around when Art Long was in school.

Freshman forward Octavius Ellis was dismissed from Cincinnati's basketball team on Friday because of an incident at a downtown nightclub the previous weekend.


The university said it is punishing Ellis even though no charges will be filed by police. A bouncer said he intervened in a confrontation between a Cincinnati basketball player and another patron at the bar and got hit.
