Cincinnati Bengals (Just Burrow In)

Kiper was super excited about Hill for the Bengals. FWIW.

Maybe the Bengals chose Hill b/c they needed a slot defender. Cine's and Hill's numbers are similar. Both had 2 int's, e.g. Equal in speed.

Hill was a reach. He’s a good player, and maybe his skill set makes him a 1st rounder in the NFL 20 years ago, but not in todays NFL. You don’t need a run stopping nickel, which is what he did best in the Big Ten. Good WRs tie him in knots. Johan Dotson had him tripping over his own feet and his hips pointing 180 degrees the wrong direction routinely.

People rave about Hills closing speed. Yeah… there’s a reason that that is what wows you with his tape.

I agree with most of what you said and I'm trying to put aside my blind hatred for the evil he came from. And I think I have. It's just not a great pick unless Cincy is convinced Bates will not be back after this year. Which leads me to this.

We just told Bates to fuck off. I'm not really sure what is going on with his negotiations, but this doesn't sit well with me at all. Bates was the heart of everything last season and the guy I would overpay just bc of his leadership. I think he's a big piece of the heart with our defense and I don't think this move will be well received on our defense. I hope I'm wrong, but even if Hill is amazing, the downside is just too much imo.

In sum, about the worst pick we could make there.

We really need an outside corner.
Hill seems to be a good slot-corner. However, slot corners do not demand 1st round capital.
My recollection of Hill's time at ttun was that they tried him out at outside corner and a more traditional safety his Fresh/Soph year and he stunk up the place.

The Bengals must be projecting him to develop at other positions.

Bates is gone. Most Bengal fans can’t remember that the team had two pretty good safeties the year they drafted Bates. While there were other players I personally would have taken, I at least understand. Bates wants top 3 money. Higgins is due soon. They need to extend Burrow. Chase will get a fat extension before his rookie deal is up. you cant sign all 4 to max deals. i credit the organization for being proactive. its almost Patriot like.

I'm ok with drafting a safety, just not where we did it. I hope Bates plays to form despite the slap in the face, but we might want to start playing Hill this year bc we're going to have to start him the next year. I just don't like the idea of a disgruntled captain that we just told to go on his way somewhere else.

Good day 2 imo. Really like Taylor-Britt at CB, was one of the only bright spots on Nebraska's defense and could play right away. Zach Carter in the 3rd at DT is also a good pick, really like his game and it was a position of need. 3 picks on the defensive side of the ball to start off, I really like it...got positions of need and didn't reach to get them. Now in the 4th we took an OT from North Dakota State (Cordell Volson). Don't know anything about him except good size at 6'6 315 and he played both tackle positions, if nothing else it is the right position to draft there.

With the draft in the books, my reaction is we did good, but not great. Drafting 3 safeties seems a little ridiculous even considering that Taylor-Britt and Hill could play nickel. We needed an outside corner and didn't pick one. Taylor-Britt possibly could play that spot, but I don't think that is his natural position. Don't get me wrong, I like Hill and Taylor-Britt's upside and these are future moves to replace Bates and probably Hilton after this year. But taking those guys back to back I am not sure about. Tycen Anderson from Toledo at safety in the 5th I liked though, tremendous measurables and at least a special teams stalwart. If you don't know anything about Anderson, here is a pretty good read, seems like he is going to be a fan favorite in Cincy. 3 time team captain and also very smart, I just see him catching on with us for many reasons.

Looks like the staff wanted young speed at DB, Hill and Taylor-Britt ran 4.38 and Anderson ran a 4.36...I don't hate that, just has to pan out with instincts in coverage. Lou came out and said how fast the WRs in the league (especially AFC) are and you need guys with recovery speed on the back end, can't disagree with him there.

Zach Carter at DT was the right move imo, we needed a quick 3-tech DT to develop and Carter fits that bill imo...probably won't jump right in and play, but we don't need him to. Volson at OT in the 4th I really like after I did more research on him, he has a lot to work with and can play tackle or guard, love the versatility. The last pick in the 7th (I am assuming we traded away our 6th pick, didn't hear any word on that) was an edge rusher from Coastal Carolina. Reckon with that pick might as well try out a guy that could come in for pressure on 3rd downs.

What was this draft missing? To me it is clear: (1) a true outside CB; and (2) a pass catching TE somewhere in rounds 3-6 to replace CJ. The good news is that I don't see either of those issues affecting us this year...Apple came along pretty well and Hurst will be ok at TE. I would have liked to see us get an athletic TE at some point because I do think we are going to feel the void of not having Uzomah (locker room and passing game). With Chase, Higgins and Boyd, that void won't be huge imo, but someone like Ruckert, Likely, Kolar, etc. would have been a big boost.

All things considered though, the Bengals had a great offseason. I am beyond ecstatic with going to FA to address the OL issues rather than the draft, we got guys that are proven commodities and young enough to be with us for a long time if things pan out...after Ogbueih, Fisher, Michael Jordan, Bodine, etc. I really don't want to rely on the draft at that position, but getting young on the cheap at DB makes a whole lot of sense. Plus a DT with upside and another tackle to develop on the OL later on in the draft, I am mostly pleased given the good moves in FA.

So I guess Bates might not even play this year? I get driving at a new long term contract and being pissed at the franchise tag, but we need Bates bad this year. If he doesn't play, our defense is in trouble. I like the rooks we picked, but they're not ready to play this year. I'm my eyes, this is the only loose end we have left to tie up before the season.

Joe Burrow has no rust during first healthy spring camp, says Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan

As crazy as it sounds, this spring is Joe Burrow’s first in the NFL. His rookie season was plagued with COVID-19 as social distancing separated him from meaningful reps, and then he was still recovering from a torn ACL heading into his second season that ended with a trip to Super Bowl LVI. As if there was any doubt, Burrow looks as good as normal, according to OC Brian Callahan.

"Same old guy," the Bengals offensive coordinator said this week. "He's in great shape. He's healthy, which is a big step. Finally, we've got an offseason together. He looks normal. No lingering effects.

"For him, the rest part of it was a big deal, too, maybe not messing with his motion and things too much and I think it's going to pay off for him. He did a really nice job of getting away this offseason in the short amount that it was and working on things he wants to improve schematically.”
