Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow still 'very optimistic' he'll play in 2021 opener after knee surgery

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow said he remains on track for the start of the 2021 season.

In an interview with "The Cris Collinsworth Podcast featuring Richard Sherman," Burrow said he is "ahead of schedule" following reconstructive knee surgery to repair injuries that ended his rookie season. He said he should be ready for the team's season opener.

"I'm expecting to be there on the first snap of 2021," Burrow said on the podcast, which was released on Tuesday.

Burrow's comments are believed to be his first public statements since January, one month after the surgery to repair the ACL and MCL ligaments in his left knee. Burrow suffered the injury in a loss to Washington on Nov. 22.

The former LSU standout and Heisman Trophy winner said he's roughly halfway through the recovery process and is "feeling really good" as he looks to make his return.

"I'm very optimistic about where I'm at and also where the team's at," Burrow said. "Rehab is going very, very well. Lifting is going very, very well. I'm in great shape. Legs feel good. Knee feels good."

Slater could be a good one, but I don't see him as a top 10 guy and more importantly, not a left tackle imo. We're already in a situation where we are likely moving Jonah Williams to RT or inside, and I don't believe Reiff is a LT (I could be wrong there though). I wouldn't be too mad if we took him, but only if Sewell is already gone and we move back some picks to take Slater.

THE CINCINNATI BENGALS CAN'T MISS WITH THE NO. 5 PICK IN THE NFL DRAFT, RIGHT?

The Cincinnati Bengals haven’t won a playoff game in 31 years, which is a long time in anyone’s book and an absolute eternity in the National Football League.

Given that the league’s very structure is set up to promote a certain level of parity and to assist teams that habitually struggle, it goes without saying that some fairly serious episodes of poor decision-making have contributed to the Bengals’ generational tale of woe.

But … we’ll say it anyway, if for no other reason than that heading into Thursday’s NFL Draft, Cincinnati appears to be in a position that’s impossible to screw up, yet plenty of people are wondering if they’ll manage to do so anyway.



"I think we're in a good spot in this draft to get one of the guys who is a premier talent," Bengals Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin told reporters. "Anybody we take with that fifth pick, the expectation is he's going to come in and help us win immediately and play a big role."

In a sense, the Bengals are holding a No. 1 or No. 2 pick for the price of the actual No. 5 in their possession, a lofty selection earned by a ho-hum 4-11-1 campaign marred by quarterback Joe Burrow’s ACL injury in Week 11.

If the Falcons go QB and throw the Bengals the choice of Pitts, Sewell and Chase...you have to take Pitts, right? how many TE's are 6-6, 240lbs and run a 4.44? if the choice is between Sewell and Chase, I'm in the Sewell camp. i know a lot of mocks have them taking Chase and then Leatherwood in rd2...I guess that would be 'ok'...so many options. all of them have big upsides.

The more research I've done on "hit rates" of first round picks for an OL vs skilled positions says you're crazy not to go OL if that is a need, and OL is most certainly our biggest need. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Pitts and am all for that pick if someone takes Sewell before us. But if Sewell is there, you gotta take him even as intriguing as Pitts is. I think there are some OTs like Leatherwood that could be there in the 2nd Round that could end up being solid pros, but are not instant starters or potential franchise players. Sewell is both of those things (or as close to a sure thing as you can get) and fulfills the biggest glaring hole the Bengals have...I just hope he is there when we pick. And if you plan on waiting until the 2nd Round for an OT, you risk other teams making a run on the position and not having the guy you thought was there.

Ok, so that said, if Sewell is there and we aren't going OL, then my clear preference is Pitts over Chase. I think Chase could end up a great WR in the league, but I don't think he really stands out head and shoulders above the other top WRs in this draft even if was Burrow's boy back at LSU.

and i am seeing some mock drafts now that have Leatherwood going to Baltimore now at the end of round 1. I agree with your assessment.

Yeah Leatherwood could very realistically go at the end of the first or beginning of the second before we pick in the second, so assuming he'd be there is not a safe assumption. There are some other OTs that should be there worth a high second round pick available, but you just can't guarantee it when you've seen a run on OTs early on plenty of times in the past. Fingers crossed we have secured Sewell come tomorrow night.

Well, this is why we will continue to be the bottom of the league. Take a WR when we don't need a WR and desperately need help protecting Burrow, but by all means just make sure it is Burrow's boy. Furthermore a dude that can't even put together an English sentence after a year of opting out is the one we pick. Bet Burrow will throw him the ball super well while his knee is broke in half again because they didn't draft Sewell to protect him. Good shit Bengals, hope our backup or 3rd string QB, or whoever is up after that, loves this great group of WRs we have now.

I will extra emphasize the above now that the other OTs I bet we thought might be there are not. Leatherwood? Gone. Darrisaw? Gone. Might as well pick another WR... just take Rondale Moore with the next pick because you've already fucked yourselves beyond repair. Then another WR in the 3rd...you get my point.

This franchise ignores what it takes to actually win. Will Chase be a good receiver? Probably. But does that matter in the grand scheme of winning a championship? No. I honestly just can't deal with this anymore when we have such fucking idiots at the helm.
