Colerain missing the playoffs?

Colerain Cardinals

In the most recent OHSAA computer polls, Cincy Colerain is rated #9 in their region, despite being #3 in the AP poll. Only the top 8 in each region make the playoffs. 3 of the teams ahead of them have 2 losses. I know it's possible to jump up in the rankings based on several factors (strength of schedule, opponents' records), but the defending state champs may need some help just to make the playoffs.

Anyone know more about the computer points and if they look like they'll get in with two weeks left to play?

One thing I know is that you don't want to be in a big conference. Big conference means that half the teams in the league loose each week cutting down on the points you garner from a league win. That's one reason why Moeller, St. X, Elder and LaSalle get in each year and why Dayton and GMC (Colerain, Princeton, Lakota, Hamilton, Middletown)teams get screwed.

Not to worry, Bucknut. Moeller will lose it's last 2 games to St Ed's and St. X. Colerain wins their last 2 and they're in, albeit close, but still in. If they win both , they should pass East and Lasalle, regardless of how those 2 finish.

sounds pretty easy there. conner stood out quite a bit last year. he has great footwork and had quite afew pancakes vs mckinley at the state game. he gave the mckinley defenders fits because he wa sa really effective downfield blocker.

Harbin overhaul?

Look for a possible offseason movement, led by some area Division I football coaches, to overhaul the always-controversial Harbin computer rating system for Ohio football playoff berths.

Scenarios such as this year, when La Salle -- which will finish 8-2 -- is biting its nails in hopes of getting into the playoffs, despite a fine year in which it's beaten both Elder and Moeller.
Or how about Colerain -- which will finish 9-1 -- wondering about whether it will host a home playoff game. You'd think the defending Division I-A state champion might merit better, but not under the current system.

All this because of the Harbin rating system, where you receive points for victories and also second-level points based on how your defeated opponents do.

Proposed changes? Area coaches are trying to remain anonymous for now, but some have suggested adding an extra week of playoffs so more teams can get in. Currently, only eight teams go from each region. Perhaps have a scenario where it's only a nine-game regular season, and 16 teams make the playoffs?

It's all speculative for now. Keep in mind, this is the time of year when the complaining about the Harbins gets loudest.

"It's getting ridiculous," one prominent Cincinnati coach says. "You're telling me a La Salle doesn't deserve to get in this year? There's no way they should have to be worrying. But that's what happens when your beaten opponents don't come through, or when people won't play you."

(And no, that wasn't La Salle coach Tom Grippa talking).

This is also a product of teams not wanting to play the big GCL South powers (Elder, La Salle, Moeller and St. Xavier) and GMC giant Colerain. Why play these teams when it is almost assuredly a loss, which means no Harbin points -- not to mention the physical pounding you take?

Stay tuned.

Hamilton at Colerain

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today at Colerain HS, 8801 Cheviot Road.
RECORDS: Hamilton 1-3 (0-1 GMC), Colerain 3-1 (1-0).

WHAT TO WATCH: Hamilton just took a 42-7 beating from Lakota West, not a good sign when the next opponent is Colerain. Hamilton was held to 44 total yards. Colerain comes off a 42-3 win over Lakota East, which was picked to finish No. 2 to Colerain in the GMC this year. Colerain QB Gary Pride (399 yards rushing this year) and RB Terrence Sherrer (340 yards rushing) are among Colerain's many offensive threats, with the defense led by LBs Tyler Moeller and Cobrani Mixon.

BOTTOM LINE: Colerain, No. 23 in the USA Today ratings, can pretty much name the score.

MIDDLETOWN - Hey, Ohio. Your defending state champion Colerain Cardinals are looking pretty nasty again.
Colerain, which has flown somewhat under the radar since losing to St. Xavier in its season opener, destroyed Middletown 68-14 on a cold, damp Senior Night at Middletown's Barnitz Stadium Friday, raising its season record to 8-1.
Junior fullback Trammell Williams rushed 22 times for a season-high 279 yards and four touchdowns for Colerain, which is ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer area Division I coaches' poll and No. 21 nationally by USA Today.
The Cardinals, who crushed Milford 76-0 last week, are gathering steam for another postseason run. Colerain's offense looked shaky in losing its season opener 7-0 to St. X, but the Cardinals' triple-option attack has averaged 53.5 points a game since then.
"I like where we are," Colerain coach Kerry Coombs said. "We're getting better every week, on both sides of the ball. I think we may be tough to beat."
It started early Friday with Williams, a 5-foot-10, 172-pound blend of speed and power who scored twice in the first six minutes. Williams is playing the fullback position formerly manned by Mister Simpson, who is now a freshman at the University of Michigan.
"It's easy for me, running behind a great senior line," Williams said. "We've got the best line in Ohio.
Colerain's offensive line, led by senior guards Connor Smith (Ohio State recruit) and Eric Ornella, continually opened big holes for Williams and Co. Colerain held a staggering 563-196 edge in total offense (532 yards rushing). Middletown was held to minus-29 yards rushing and got most of its yardage via passes late in the game vs. Colerain's reserve defense.
Williams also has taken center stage while the Cardinals' resident senior running backs, Terrence Sherrer (University of Minnesota recruit) and Kyle Lumpkin, have seen their carries dwindle.
"Terrence and Kyle have been very humble about it, and that's great," Coombs said. "They all just want to win, and I'm proud of them."
Backup running back Dwayne Curry, a junior, rushed 13 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns for Colerain. Most of Curry's work came late in the game.
Ron Johnson, in his first year as Middletown head coach, was duly impressed.
"They're what we aspire to be," Johnson said. "We're proud to be on the same field with Colerain, and it's good for our kids to see this. They're what we're all shooting for."
Friday's game extended Colerain's Greater Miami Conference winning streak to 43 games, dating to October 1999.
Next week, Colerain will try to wrap up at least a share of its sixth straight GMC title. The Cardinals will play Oak Hills at 6 p.m. at Paul Brown Stadium, with St. Xavier facing Moeller in the second game of a doubleheader.
Colerain scored the first four times it had the ball, good for a 28-0 lead by early in the second quarter.
It was 41-0 by halftime.
"You've got to make it a 15-round fight, and they knocked us out in the first round," Johnson said.
Colerain's attacking defense, led by Ohio State-bound Tyler Moeller and Michigan recruit Cobrani Mixon at linebackers, allowed virtually nothing. Middletown didn't advance past its own 43-yard line against Colerain's starting defense.
Coombs pulled all his offensive starters and most of his defensive regulars with 6:22 left in the third quarter, with Colerain up 48-0.

Colerain vs. Oak Hills

WHEN/WHERE: 6 p.m. today at Paul Brown Stadium.

RECORDS: Colerain 8-1 (6-0 GMC), Oak Hills 5-4 (3-3).

WHAT TO WATCH: Colerain has found its groove, as junior QB Gary Pride and junior RB Trammell Williams continue to develop. Pride has rushed for a team-high 890 yards and 13 TDs. Williams has rushed for 841 yards and 14 TDs. Colerain's defense is taking names as usual, holding Middletown to minus-29 yards rushing last week. Oak Hills is having a decent year but won't be able to match Colerain's speed and athleticism. Oak Hills lost 54-13 last week at Lakota West.

BOTTOM LINE: Colerain has won 43 straight GMC games dating to 1999, and tonight will clinch at least a share of its sixth straight league title.

The Colerain-Glen Este Division I playoff football game (Saturday, 7 p.m.) will remain at Glen Este, OHSAA assistant commissioner Bob Goldring said Monday.

"They earned the right to host as the higher seed, and have chosen to do so," Goldring said.

Glen Este is seeded No. 4, and Colerain, the defending state champion, is No. 5 in the regional pairings. Glen Este's stadium can seat only about 2,000 but, with standing room, will sell 6,000 tickets.

"The parking lot will open at 4 p.m. and the gates will open at 5 p.m., and we'll charge $2 to park on campus," Glen Este athletic director Dan Simmons said.

Colerain athletic director Dan Moody said his school is fine with that. "They have earned the right to host it," Moody said.
