Chip off the old block; Another Bujnoch paves way for Panther runners

Austen Bujnoch can put a lifetime of football behind every block he throws for Elder, and he and his fellow offensive linemen led a dominant offense to a 38-19 rout of Middletown Saturday at the Crosstown Showdown at Nippert Stadium.
My whole life it's been football and learning how to play and everything," the 6-foot-5 senior said.
Austen's dad, Glenn Bujnoch, played offensive guard in the NFL from 1976 until 1984, including the first seven years of his career with the Bengals.
But long before his pro playing days, Glenn Bujnoch played football at Mount Carmel High School in Houston, where just about every high school has the same kind of intense following the Elder football program has.

Seventeen seconds into Friday night's game, Adam Brown felt confident enough to approach Bradley Glatthaar on the home sideline and make a bold statement.

Elder's current star running back was ready to one-up the Panthers' former standout on this night.

"I told him I was going for it, either the single-game touchdown record or the single-game rushing record," Brown said.

Brown gladly settled for placing his name next to Glatthaar's and three others' in Elder's record book as the junior rushed for five touchdowns in an easy 56-7 victory over Covington Catholic at the Pit.

Playing just the first half, Brown rushed for 177 yards on 10 carries as the city?s top-ranked team set the cruise control for the remainder of the regular season.

Tradition, prospects on display in Elder's win over Colerain - ESPN

Mark Miller knows the tradition is alive and is purple-clad. He felt the passion Friday afternoon, when Cincinnati's Elder High School staged an elaborate pep rally.

Alex Welch, a Notre Dame-bound tight end and teammate, agrees.

"Football is talked about every day around here; you can't escape it," he said.

The traditions found in the Cincinnati area span generations.

There's Opening Day of Major League Baseball with the Reds, the appetizing eats of Skyline Chili, Montgomery Inn Ribs and Glier's goetta, and riverboats on the Ohio River.

High school football might be in the hearts of Cincinnatians, with good reason: In any given year, there could be multiple nationally ranked teams and future pros within a 20-mile radius.

The tradition of Friday night lights gave way to a Sunday afternoon matinee at the nation's most storied high school stadium. Elder Stadium, or "The Pit," hosted the ESPN cameras, showcasing a taste of Cincinnati football.
