Cincinnati Reds (2017 official thread of moose knuckle)

With this donkeyshow almost over, I've been looking through the numbers. Just to confirm....these guys suck.

For 2018, maybe some signs of life.....I guess. Cozart is surely gone, but all the other losers except Storen & Feldman are back, I think.

Position players
LF: Duvall
CF: Hamilton
RF: Schebler
3B: Suarez
SS: Peraza?
2B: Gennett
1B: Gizmo
C: Barnhart

OBP will be a nightmare outside of Votto & Suarez (surprisingly a .369 to me). Gennett & Barnhart were both at .345, but can they replicate that? Schebler (.310), Hamilton (.300), Peraza (.295), and Duvall (.295) all suck at not making outs.

And how many guys will be better next year?
-Duvall - nope
-Hamilton - nope
Schebler - power numbers improved quite a bit this year, but OBP tanked. 30 HR and only 66 RBI? Jesus
Suarez - nope
-Peraza - doubtful. I haven't seen anything to think he can ever hit
-Gennett - fluke year, I'd be shocked if he replicated it
-Votto - has to start the downward trend sometime, but won't be getting much better
-Barnhart - doubtful

Something like this?
Hamilton
Suarez
Votto
Duvall
Gennett
Schebler
Barnhart
Peraza

Off the bench....Kivlehan sucks, Winker & Ervin have looked decent in limited time, but will be stuck behind these other bums. And if they get the chance, they'll suck, too. Alcantara? Sucks. Need another consummate professional role player to fill-in in the IF. Anyone seen Juan Castro lately?

Pitchers
Desclafani - probably dead - good if healthy
Castillo - looked really good this year
Finnegan - meh if healthy
Romano - okay for a rookie; can he get better?
Bailey - what is there to say? Even if healthy, who knows?
Stephenson - looked really good down the stretch; will revert
Garrett - looked good at the start but went full shitshow after

Cingrani - meh; looked decent for awhile...but not long
Lorenzen - meh; signs of being good followed by weeks of suckage
Peralta - meh
Iglesias - poor bastard stuck on this team
A whole bunch of other bums

The offense should be middle-of the road again. It all depends on starting pitching....if Desclafani and Castillo can prove to be a good 1-2 punch and you can get even 3 consistent pitchers out of the rest, then they just need to fill out the bullpen with a FA or two and the best of what they've seen this year.

If the starting pitching stays healthy, I think .500 is a reasonable goal.

But who the fuck cares?

my thoughts for 2018

offense = lots of power but the OBP consistency in the lineup needs to improve
defense = will probably still be one of the better def units in all of MLB. currently have #1 and #2 in all of baseball in OF assists
pitching = will it ever improve? injuries to too many guys

hoping for 80 wins

I'll be about as ready for '18 as I was for '17 (and '16 and '15 and....)

Another top 5 pick is locked in.

Wonder who the poor unfortunate bastard is going to be?
no clue. the frustration is real. they said they were in a rebuild but it was nothing more than a salary dump. They said the improvements would be noticeable. they lost 94 LAST year, too. The team still tries to present certain players as 'stars' (like Hamilton) who would be a 5th OF on most teams that are around .500. The young pitching may yield one capable starter out of the 47 they tried this year. that's not really a great ratio...if I were a diehard Red's fan right now, I'd seriously consider becoming an Indians fan.

Reds recent 1st Round Pitchers
2011: Robert Stephenson Demoted to AAA after putting up 61.2 IP at MLB level with a 6.86 ERA and 1.77 WHIP (total bust)
2012: Nick Travieso Last seen in AA, now injured, no stats for 2017 (bust)
2013: Michael Lorenzen Failed starter who has salvaged his career with a move to the pen where he has decent value (bust turned fungible bullpen asset)
2014: Nick Howard Still in fucking dayton with an MLB career ERA of 5.6 and WHIP of 1.9. I am going to go ahead and call this one a bust

Trades for pitching
Cueto to KC for Finnegan, Lamb and Reed. All 3 turned out to be total dog [Mark May]

Leake to SF for Keury Mella (who is currently getting ass hammered in AA)

Marlon Byrd to CWS for Stephen Johnson (getting Lucy'd in AAA to the tune of a 5+ ERA)

Chapman given to Yankees for a guy who fucking retired already and Rookie Davis, who probably should have.

Ohio professional sports folks. They are probably 30-40% of the reason this state is so crazy for Thee Ohio State Buckeyes.

as we look forward to another top 5 pick, worth remembering how well they have done recently with personnel decisions

The Red's pitching is so bad, I'm thinking that this guy could probably make the team:
