Cincinnati Reds 2021 (because we have to, I guess)

I've got it! This year's title is in reference to The Wizard of Oz, though it'd be closer saying No Wizards in Oz.

Them bastards spent the last week tapping their little heals together praying they could just flash back home where it actually appears that a Major League team plays so far this year. Of course they've played a couple shit heals at home so take that or what it's worth.

Ok, let's get the cast of characters together!

David Bell - Scarecrow (No doubter. If he only had a brain)
Joey Votto - Cowardly Lion (He might actually be fixing his swing but his head case antics have to be the lion)
Jonathan India - Dorothy (He's too naive to realize he isn't in Kansas anymore. Poor bastard)

That's all I got for now, you all finish it out. LOL

Reds and clutch in the same sentence? It's definitely an April Fool's month this year. They keep this through May and I'll know it's real, not until then.

Some notable BABIP numbers to consider before buying a ticket on the hype train:

India: .382
Twinker: .462
Barnhart: .588!! (and a 36.4% K rate at the same time...holy shit!)
Stephenson: .467

  • Even though his BABIP is actually "unlucky", I don't think Naquin is going to keep up that .410 ISO (Mike Trout led MLB in 2019 with a .353 as a point of reference).
  • Regression is coming. Bigtime.
  • Votto and Suarez are the only "unlucky" one's of note. So about what any reasonable Reds fan would expect I would hope. Votto and Suarez will come on as this flotilla of guys having career April's start to crash back to earth.
Starting pitching looks like it should stay about where it's at.
team xFIP: 3.63 good for 10th in MLB
team actual era: 4.02 (14th in MLB)

Bullpen
xFIP: 4.31
ERA: 4.28 (20th)
so, looks like that's about where it should be

Defensively both catchers and Moustakas at 3B are all good. Farmer, Naquin, Senzel, Suarez, Votto and Castellanos are all slightly below average to dreadful in descending order.

So at this point the team that is currently tied with the Dodgers for most runs scored in MLB (88) is looking at an obvious offensive regression.
That same team is middle of the MLB road in Runs allowed at 61 (15th in MLB)
Terrible defense will continue it's work all season in eroding Run prevention.

When the offense craters or any of the pitchers get hurt it's a .500 team at best. At best. Good news for these sorry ass taint lickers is the rest of NL Central appears to be equally underwhelming so who knows.
