Rivals (Free)

8/19

Ranked 7th in Rivals Preseason rankings.

And they have the toughest schedule in HS football.

#3 Don Bosco Prep
#15 Prattville
#29 Colerain
#61 St. Ignatius
#74 Trinity
#82 Moeller
#98 Elder

The only nonranked teams they play are Cathedral (IN), LaSalle, and St. Eds. Those teams are no slouches either.

That schedule is just crazy. The only plus is they only travel out of Ohio once, and that is to Trinity in Kentucky. The furthest game may be St. Eds. Outside of those 2 the rest are in Cincinnati.

A battle at the top

Nos. 1, 2 in area, they clash in opener tonight
By Tom Groeschen • [email protected] • August 22, 2008

St. Xavier and Colerain are the reigning behemoths of local high school football, and their ongoing testosterone war takes center stage in a season opener tonight.

The defending state champion Bombers (15-0 last year) will face the Cardinals (12-1) in a Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown game at UC's Nippert Stadium at 8:15 p.m. The programs have combined to win three of the past four Division I state titles (Colerain 2004, St. Xavier 2005 and '07).

St. Xavier is ranked No. 1 and Colerain No. 2 in the preseason Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll. Nationally, St. Xavier is rated No. 18 by USA Today.

Posted by mikedyer at 8/17/2009 3:01 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

St. Xavier football coach Steve Specht said in an e-mail this afternoon that senior QB Luke Massa has been effective in preseason workouts.

"Luke looks great," Specht said. "First time he's looked healthy since his sophomore year."

Massa missed the majority of last season due to injury, but says he is completely healthy for this fall.

Massa orally committed to UC earlier this summer.

Big win for St. X...game into the game ranked #25 in the nation, while Edler was ranked #3 heading into the game.

St. Xavier 17, Elder 7 | Cincinnati.com | The Cincinnati Enquirer

The past week was rough on Luke Massa and his St. Xavier football teammates, but Friday night was an absolute joyride.

Senior quarterback Massa guided a ball-control offense and the Bombers played their typically tough defense to beat Elder 17-7, before a sellout crowd of 8,000-plus at St. Xavier.

St. Xavier was upset 12-7 at Highlands (Ky.) last week, one of the most humbling defeats in recent Bombers history.

"Give Highlands credit, they beat us," Massa said. "We knew we were still one of the best teams in Ohio. We wanted to come out and prove that tonight."

Rivals High

When Cleveland St. Ignatius head coach Chuck Kyle was asked to coach the American team in this summer's International Federation of American Football's Junior World Championship, the first person he called was Cincinnati St. Xavier head coach Steve Specht.

The team they put together outscored opponents 174-3 and easily won a gold medal against youth football players from seven other countries.

The friendship is on hold this weekend.
