Cleaning a bad infestation of malware, virii, trojans, rootkits etc

Virus appears to be gone but there's still some things that I'm not liking. Ran hijack this and this is my log. I also got some kind of message saying there were a few things that it was denied access to and I have to run as administrator but when I right click the hijack this option there's no run as administrator option.

Windows crashed, probably has something to do with the virus I'd had. I did mess with the registry although it worked fine for two days afterward. I'm just finding out that Vista doesn't come with a recovery disk so I'm googling for solutions. This will be fun. If anyone has any suggestions let me know please, any help will be greatly appreciated :)

You can call Dell and they should be able to send you recovery disks for free. At least that's what they did for me. Just be sure to have the numbers from the PC tag that's on your comp. (usually located in the back or on the top of the tower)

Dude, I don't have a Dell, I have a Lenovo. They didn't give me a recovery disk and now I'm finding out that computers with Vista don't have a preinstalled system recovery option. It may be time for a new computer.

 I see what you did there. Yeah, that definitely sucks. Sounds worse than what was happening to my computer a few months back. Luckily, I nuked the computer clean, and restarted.

If you do end up getting your hands on a new recovery disk, I recommend going this route first, then recovery disk.

I have one of those somewhere, or at least had one. Maybe I'll go that route, just nuke the whole disk and reinstall windows. I doubt that the hard drive is fried, the computer isn't that old. I back up reguarly so it's no big deal if I lose my data. I can easily reinstall all the programs that I had. We'll see how it goes.

If you have an external hard drive, I'd recommend backing up all your important info on there. When you nuke the computer, you literally NUKE the computer.

It worked like a charm on mine, got rid of whatever leeching virus I had, and haven't had an issue since.

What I would do.. is buy Windows 7.. and start from scratch...
this is exactly what I had to do just a few months ago...

If you set Windows Update to 'remote control'/automatic update.. and updates come down the line (usually overnight)... you may try to do something or even sign on the next morning... and think the system froze.. where in reality a Windows update is running... but the system doesn't tell you a thing.. so you power off...

You interrupt a Windows update and for all practical purposes you have the equivalent to a disk crash without the hardware problem... you have to reinstall EVERYTHING from scratch...

Vista is on its last legs... so I bit the bullet and went to Windows 7... ya want to avoid being on the tail end of operating systems life cycle... and basically Windows 7 is Vista on steroids

I was thinking about doing, I think I'll go that route.

If you're going to completely NUKE a PC, I recommend completely wiping the hard drive before reinstalling the OS on it. I use Darik's Boot and Nuke (burned it to a CD) and I just run that after I copy any important files to an external. After I nuke the HD then I reinstall the operating system. You can find torrents online for any Windows OS, just download the .ISO and burn to a dvd as a bootable disc. Granted, you have to still use an authentic OS key which came with your PC.
