Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

I know there has been a lot of discussion around the drafting of Weeden and after having watched lower drafted QBs like Kaepernick and Foles perform I just question this pick even more.

Obviously Kaepernick has a solid team around him, but Foles not so much. You can tell Harbaugh knew what he was looking for when he traded up to get Kaepernick.

The new front office can't get here fast enough.

Totally agree, Weedens arm strength > colt mccoys noodle dick arm. Colt Mccoy will be a nice back up QB his whole career but if you can't decipher that Weeden is a better NFL qb then you are and idiot and you don't need stats to back it up ,use your own two eyes.
Here's what my eyes tell me: same (or arguably worse) stats, 3-8 record.

I'm not ready to give up on Weeden. But neither can I make the claim that he is a better QB than McCoy - that simply has not been proven or dis-proven at this point. And at 29, he just doesn't have the time to slowly evolve, he needs to start "getting it" now.

Did the kid sound football saavy? Or like he just watched Sportscenter for a minute and puked it all back up to you?

A subtle "tell" about a man good enough for one's daughter

Actually, he is pretty sharp for a 19 yr old. Die-hard NY Giants fan and he knows more that two players, present and past on the UGA football team. I give him credit, he does know the teams he loves very well. While he sees the world through SEC glasses, he is receptive to guidance and always striving for knowledge especially on our beloved Buckeyes!!

Aside from the boneheaded pick of Marecic, our FO did
Very well in the draft the past couple years.

I'll bite.

They aren't different at the QB position. At all. Sure Weeden has a stronger arm (I don't think the difference is that huge to be honest), he's also thrown a lot more interceptions and he's shown an annoying lack of accuracy in the red zone (especially on the fade routes).

The one year McCoy had a solid running game, the Browns won. Is McCoy going to lead the Browns to the Super Bowl? No, he won't. Neither will Weeden. The Browns issues weren't at the QB position and still aren't.

I had a discussion with my daughter's boyfriend about the McCoy / Weeden QB issue. I feel the Browns could have gotten as much production from McCoy, if not more. at the helm. It's not a knock on Weeden as a player, it's a knock on drafting a now 29 year old rookie who is not a major upgrade at a position of need. I'm not saying McCoy is the answer either but why pick a player that is not a long-term solution?

I have shared my thoughts on the Brown's 2012 draft and while there have been some nice surprises (WInn and Hughes have been great gets), other's not so much (Weeden and Schwartz).

IMO, if given the opportunity, I feel McCoy could be as good if not better than Weeden at this point.

mitchell schwartz has been nothing short of impressive as a rookie. why you continue to perpetuate this nonsense is baffling.

the browns issues are certainly scheme based. however, colt mccoy's inability to make NFL throws has for some reason quickly been forgotten.

It's kind of hard to make "NFL throws" when you're running for your life or on your back - just saying....and no one was worried about him making "NFL throws" when he had a good run with 4 wins in 6 weeks in 2010 either....

The Point still stands - the Browns had huge holes - much bigger at some positions than the QB position.

I agree with you Mike, the Browns have constantly tried to upgrade the QB position for years and it just doesn't seem to make a difference. This would lead most people, from a common sense standpoint, to conclude that there are other issues at play....coaching, Oline, receivers....hmmmmm

Right now, the biggest hole is the smoldering crater otherwise known as the Head Coach.

If they had someone who doesn't continually piss down his leg (Specifically the Colts, Cowboys and Bills games), they are probably 6-5 or 5-6 right now as sad as it sounds and 8-8 would be a definite possibility from this point. The AFC is horrifically bad once you get past Denver.

Once Shurmur is gone, it will be fun to guess who they are going to bring in. With Haslam's connections to the Squeelers you know we are going to be subjected to constant Bill Cowher rumors.

I wasn't a fan of drafting Weeden, but I do think he is an upgrade over McCoy. That might not be obvious this season, but I think he'll separate himself next year after he has an offseason to process everything that has been thrown at him this year. I like Colt, but he looks like a lifetime backup to me, which is why I wanted the Browns to hang onto him unless someone offers a nice trade for him.

Weeden's arm forces defenses to cover more of the field. I know Colt didn't have the weapons on the outside that Weeden does, but most of the completions in his first season went to TE's and RB's so defenses only had to cover around 20 yards of the field. Weeden does have Richardson, but Colt had Beast-Mode Hillis for his first season, which I would argue equals Rookie Richardson.

For the first time since the new team the Browns look to be a good destination for the new head coach. The defense is already good and a couple pieces away from being great. Weeden, Richardson, Gordon, Little, and Schwartz should all improve with the offseason. They just need to find the right coach who can work with what they have like Harbaugh did in San Fran. If so they could challenge for the division next year. Stick with Weeden and keep any eye out for the next Kaepernick or Foles over the next few drafts to develop as the long term answer at QB.
