Cleveland Browns (2013 Season)

Grossi:

Why did Browns owner Jimmy Haslam feel the need to say, "Every decision we make is not going to be popular"?

And why did CEO Joe Banner say, "I understand that I?m going out on the limb."? The occasion was the introduction of Mike Lombardi as the team's VP of player personnel. The move was controversial and unpopular. Lombardi has been outside the NFL for five years and was not interviewed for any of five other NFL GM jobs this year. Lombardi worked with the old Browns (1987-95) in various capacities. He forged a friendship with Banner with the Philadelphia Eagles (1997-98). Some see the out-of-the-box hiring as a means of Banner maintaining control over all football operations.

Does this mean Gocong and JMJ as ILB??

I don't think so. D'Qwell should start inside although he wasn't that great there the last time they played 3-4. I think Sheard and Gocong are the current OLB's, with JMJ getting a look inside. JMJ seems like a pro-typical 4-3 linebacker to me though.

Their roster needs a lot of work at LB. I wouldn't be surprised to see them take multiple LB's in the draft.

On the flip-side, I think they have good talent that will translate in the front 3. Billy Winn will be good at DE, and counter to what a lot of people say, I think I'd put Rubin at the other DE. Let Phil Taylor eat up space inside. I think Rubin has a great body to handle gap penetration as a DE. He's a lot leaner than Phil, although not quite as explosive. Anyways, I think between Rubin and Taylor, you have 2 very good pieces already in place.

The thing that sucks about switching to the 3-4, is most college linebackers don't know how to play it. Looking at teams like Pittsburgh, they draft LB's with the intention of making them wait 3-4 years before they become productive. The Browns have enough talent on the roster to be competitive shortly, but unless they knock free agency out of the park, which is possible, this defense will struggle because of that singular position.

horton's 3-4 defense actually plays a lot of different fronts. they lined up like osu does quite a few times last year. so sheard would be in the simon spot, rubin in goeble's and taylor in hankins. they still need a stand up rush end, but rush end was a need regardless of front.

I figured Jackson at OLB because of a) his size. B) his unwillingness
To attack the ball carrier which will be a priority with our inside backers.

It kind of sucks because unless we land Werner, I can't think of another
Viable option for a rush end in the 1st round.

Damontre Moore
Jarvis Jones
Dion Jordan
Barkevious Mingo
Sam Montgomery
Ziggy Ansah

And quite frankly, all those guys would fit better as OLBs in a 34 front than Werner would.

Damontre Moorezero outside speed. Poor base and questionable moves
Jarvis Jones. depends on his medical tests
Dion Jordan. hell fucking no. You watch him at all??
Barkevious Mingo. undersized. Under productive. Huge risk
Sam Montgomery. vernon Gholston v2.0 unless he learns to use his hands
Ziggy Ansah. Ehhh.

And quite frankly, all those guys would fit better as OLBs in a 34 front than Werner would.

I beg to differ.

jackson's size lines up favorably with other ILB's in the 3-4 around the league. his being undersized is just wrong.

werner is probably the worst fit of the potential rush ends in the 1st round to play a 3-4.
