From a football POV, you're right - not that the Browns have demonstrated a football POV of late - but this is the second time they've put out big bucks to an undersized, immature QB. Unlike the first one, this guy pissed off a solid group of Buckeyes/Browns fans. If he goes out and gives a Manzell performance the pay back will be significant.
Which means they'll be mad about what he did in Cincinnati, Baltimore, etc. Not Cleveland, particularly if it stacks up poorly with the rookie efforts in Buffalo or New Jersey.

Also they finally relinquished on their avoidance of drafting Buckeyes (and frankly may have reached a bit for Denzel).

I think Lattimore made Denzel quite a bit of money.

What in Otto Graham's name were the Browns thinking when they drafted an undersized QB whose antics in the 'shoe earned him a lifetime of hate? He'll have to be great from his first game on to keep the boo birds from shitting all over him.

He's a punk, but if he can play I don't give a shit. We should've beat him, but he's a competitor which brings me to my next point.

Concerns about his size are well founded. But I completely disagree with any comparisons to Manziel. This is a guy that fought from walk-on status to Heisman. He's got the attitude to go with it; but he's not a druggie that skips monday film breakdown to do coke in Vegas.
Everyone that did their homework on Aggie knew Evans was the real star... I don't worry about Baker's personality and drive. I do worry about his ability to succeed in the NFL as a QB from a physical standpoint.

Baker Mayfield apparently 'did not look ready to compete' for the Browns starting QB job

The Cleveland Browns are in the middle of their annual offseason hype parade, although this time around it feels like it might be worth watching, considering all of the impressive upgrades made by general manager John Dorsey this offseason. It starts with the quarterback position, where Baker Mayfield, drafted No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, is expected to push veteran Tyrod Taylor, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Bills.

Based on one report out of OTAs, that won't be the case, as Cleveland.com's Dan Labbe wrote from Browns OTAs and minicamp he doesn't see Mayfield as "ready to compete" for the starting job.

It's a small sample size, but Labbe believes the rookie is lagging behind Taylor.

"This is where I tell you that, based on the six practices of OTAs and minicamp that were open to the media, Mayfield, in my opinion, did not look ready to compete with Taylor for the No. 1 quarterback job," Labbe wrote.

Mayfield isn't a bust yet, but with the Brown's history of drafting QBs in the first round; I thought that they should of traded down or went for Chubb.

6 OTAs and a minicamp and he's already a bust and not ready to compete with an actual NFL-quality starter? TRAGEDY!!!

But in reality, no shit. He's a rookie. It's a good thing that he looks like a rookie. There's a natural progression to these things. Let it play out.

Wonderful news.

I hope his career dies on a vine in CLE.

Fuck this guy.

I don't put too much stock into OTA's. That said it's nice to hear good camp reports early on as opposed to your #1 overall struggling to grasp the fundamentals.

Meanwhile I'm paying close attention the OTA and camp reports out of the Cardinals....
