Freddie Kitchens: 5 challenges facing him as head coach of the Cleveland Browns

HC: Freddie Kitchens
Special Asst to the HC: Jody Wright

OC: Todd Monken
QB: Ryan Lindley
RB: Stump Mitchell
WR: Adam Henry
OL/Associate HC: James Campen
TE: Vacant
OQC: Jim Dray
OQC: Tyler Tettleton

DC: Steve Wilks
DL: Tosh Lupoi
LB: Al Holcomb
DB: Vacant

ST: Mike Priefer
Asst ST: Vacant

It looked like DeWayne Walker was staying on to coach the DBs but that may not be the case now with Wilks probably getting to pick his guy. Chris Jones of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is reportedly accepting a defensive position with the Browns but it isn't clear what that role is yet. Joe Philbin reportedly interviewed and there was speculation it was for the open TE coach job.

Mary Kay, good Lord. Here are 5 real challenges that he has:

1. Overcoming the stigma and dealing with expectations simultaneously. The Browns have sucked forever and a month. Now it’s playoffs or bust. Good luck.

2. Game management. All of a sudden, you can’t have your dick buried in the playsheet all game. Timeouts? 4th and 1? FG or go? That’s all you now.

3. Use your weapons. Finally, there is something called talent on this offense. Trick is, there’s one ball, and Chubb, Duke, Landry, Njoku, Perriman, and whatever WR upgrade you make are all going to want it. A lot. How can you ground and pound with Chubb and still take advantage of Duke? Good problem to have.

4. Personnel upgrades. Yes, Dorsey is calling the shots, but I’m sure you will have input as to needs, and you need to focus on the whole team now. So, not only do you need to focus on the LT and WR upgrades, you need to worry about a second DT and what technique you want, OLBs being pass rush or coverage guys, secondary help at corner, and for fucks sake a kicker.

5. Jimmy Haslem. He will try to fuck your shit up. And he’ll fuck your shit up big time when Bonnie gets home. How you navigate an arrogant hayseed who thinks he’s a football guy will be important.

I see some sites are reporting that Walker is the DB coach but I am not sure either because there are reports that they are interviewing Joe Whitt, formerly of the Packers, who has some experience as a DB coach. Also have no idea where Jones is going to end up. Still do not see a TE coach being mentioned. Maybe Freddie can do that also:wink:

N'Keal Harry is a name you often see attached to the Browns at #17, although others argue that Marquise Brown or DK Metcalf are the best receivers in this class. Have also seen OT Greg Little, CB Deandre Baker and DT Christian Wilkins are some other names that make sense at #17. Kiper's latest mock has them taking DT Jeffrey Simmons from Mississippi State:

Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State

The surging Browns hit on their 2018 draft class, led by Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward and Nick Chubb. Can general manager John Dorsey do it again? My comp for Simmons is emerging Chiefs star Chris Jones, whom Dorsey picked in Round 2 when he was in Kansas City. Simmons is supremely athletic and already advanced in his technique as a pass-rusher. However, he will have to answer to NFL teams about his 2016 arrest during the pre-draft process.

I think I would address the defensive side of the ball instead of a WR or OT especially if they can re-sign Perriman in the off-season. I have also heard Dieken say that if they can get Robinson stronger in the weight room and get him re-signed that he could fill the bill at Lt. He also said that Hubbard needs to get a little stronger. The OL played pretty well this past season so depending upon who they sign in FA I am more concerned with the defensive side of the ball. Need a big DT, LB, and a couple more DBs.

Oh, I was listening to WKNR yesterday afternoon and they had Eric Metcalf on and they told him that he was related to DK Metcalf. Eric said that he had no idea if he was related or not.

Watched Marquise Brown in one game this year (vs WVU) and he crushed it. After that, I was intrigued so I looked to see how he fared against a team with a defense (Bama,) and he was non existent. Also not particularly in love with his blood connections to the most popular WR in the news these days.

I am big fan of how Robinson played (granted they had nowhere to go but up after Desmond Harrison's performance against the Ravens). Would definitely like to see them extend his contract another year or two and then continue to develop Harrison.

Agree with others that I would prefer to see them focus on defense at #17.

Greg made LT an area that doesn't require immediate upgrade, especially because he is a monster run blocker. Actually he has made Hubbard the more expendable of our tackles.

With Wilks running the defense the front 7 will take priority. Like me some Devin White and/or Wilkins from Clemson.

hahaha

FARMER'S FEARS WOULD prove to be well-founded. Haslam was losing faith and patience in Farmer, who told his deputies that the owner questioned his roster decisions so often that every move "became what he would like to see done." Haslam told other executives he didn't think Farmer was strategic enough in the draft -- an unfair charge, the scouting department felt, given Haslam's fingerprints on personnel decisions. On top of it all, Farmer was suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season because he had illegally texted team personnel on the sideline during a game in 2014, upset over the offensive playcalling. The Browns now were breaking the rules and losing, leading to even more public mocking. The outside anger was felt inside the building. Marketing executives wanted employees to see how fans were engaging with the Browns on social media, so they projected the Browns feed onto a giant wall at the facility. It was like broadcasting talk radio over the entire building, and one day in particular, it was worse than that. One of the marketing staffers entered a search for #dp -- for Dawg Pound. The problem was, that hashtag carried a few different meanings, one of which triggered an array of porn to be broadcast onto a wall for the entire office to see for more than 20 minutes, until a tech employee killed the feed.
