Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

IIRC they are saving 9.5M by cutting him. I bet they'll get more production out of that money with another player. Save the cap space to pay Mayfield and Garrett in a few years.

They didnt need to cut anyone to get capspace for that.
He was leading tackler... i appreciate he's not worth the big price tag but theyre not spending it on a replacement either.
Now that there's finally a QB... why arent they spending the cap? I dont expect to go into reserves necessarily... but they were 26mil under (and another 56mil in carryover) before releasing Collins.
The best time to strike is while your best players are on rookie contracts... not sitting around 3 years.

You realize free agency hasn’t even opened up yet, right? Maybe let that happen before you start bitching.

Read an article last night that the new DC likes to use 2 LB and an extra safety in the box. Good thing we have a certain SS that is better as an undersized OLB than playing in coverage. it's possible they realize they didn't need another high priced OLB that they wouldn't have a position for next season and would rather use that money one a DT or safety. I wouldn't be too fast at judging them for cutting Collins until you see what the defense looks like next year. It isn't like the defense set the world on fire last year once the takeaways dropped off. Use that 9M + some cap and give me Suh to man the middle.

The goal of the carryover cap isn't to blow it all now, but to make the 2nd contracts for guys like Mayfield and Garrett hurt less. If they blow it all now trying to win in the next 3 years those massive guaranteed contracts are going to hurt a lot more when it comes time to pay the good young players they are drafting. Better to use the cap wisely and spread the rollover over the next 10 years.

Suh would have to be at a pretty team friendly deal for me to sign him. But there are some very interesting interior players that might fall to day 2 should we go that route.

Jerry Tillery is somebody I'm really starting to like. Reminds me of Heyward a good bit.

It's less about Collins specifically and more about this team consistently being way under the cap.
Is he worth 9mil/yr (rising to 11 later)? Obviously not, but he was productive and no reason to expect theyre going to be close to the cap before or after.
If we're counting on gerbil making up his production, i expect even more missed tackles.

I already addressed the 2nd paragraph.

I have no idea how much the contracts are supposed to rise, but that's above the annual rate paid to most top LB signees last year.

top 2018 FAs per SBNation

$7.50 - 22.5 m 3 yr - Avery Williamson
$8.00 - 24.0 m 3 yr - Demario Davis*

$9.00 - 45.0 m 5 yr - Anthony Hitchens* **
$8.00 - 40.0 m 5 yr - Nigel Bradham
$8.00 - 24.0 m 3 yr - Zach Brown

* - Labeled after the season as one of the best FA signings
** - B/R called it one of the worst before the season

A similar 2019 prospect would be Jordan Hicks, which is estimated as a 7.5 m / 3 yr guy.
While Sportrac.com doesn’t have a projected contract for Hicks, they do note that players with similar production to Hicks (leading up to their current contracts) are Luke Kuechly, Wesley Woodyard, Jon Bostic, Cory Littleton and Avery Williamson. Since Littleton is on his rookie deal, I removed him from the equation. The other four have contracts that average out to 3.25 years, $24.7 million. Adjusted for a solid number, that comes out to 3 years, $22.8 million or $7.6 million per year, which is probably too high for the Eagles to afford.
