Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

Baker Mayfield and post-hype Browns: Why big improvement should be expected in 2020

New staff, new team, new expectations for Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns entered the 2019 season with lofty expectations. They appeared to have their quarterback of the future in Baker Mayfield, they acquired star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. via trade and hired a new coach in Freddie Kitchens. The Browns couldn't even fully enjoy their first drive of the season, however, as kicker Austin Seibert missed the extra point after an eight-play, 73-yard touchdown drive. From that point, Cleveland's season went downhill.

The Tennessee Titans would go on to score 12 unanswered points in the first half of the season opener and 31 total points in the second half on their way to a 43-13 Week 1 win over the Browns. It was just the first of many blows Cleveland would suffer last season, as they finished with a disappointing 6-10 record. Kitchens was fired, Beckham Jr. didn't have the immediate impact many were expecting and Mayfield took a step backwards. After throwing for 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 14 games during his rookie season, the former No. 1 overall pick threw for 3,827 yards, 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 2019. Despite the sophomore slump, we all know Mayfield is gearing up for a bounce-back season in 2020.

Does anyone think that if Model had not moved the Browns to Baltimore, Belichick would still be their head coach and the Browns would have won 6 SuperBowls?

Just sayin': (If the Browns front office would have let Belichick handle the the major personnel decisions, i.e. trades and the draft) maybe not 6, but I'd think at least 2 or 3.

The 2020 Browns have a new front office regime and a new coaching staff. If that sounds familiar, it should. The only head coach to make it more than two seasons under the ownership of the Haslam family has been Hue Jackson, and he didn’t finish a third. John Dorsey was in charge of the roster for two years and three weeks, and the Browns added a bunch of talent during that time. But Dorsey was fired last December, in part because his coaching hire, Freddie Kitchens, flopped. The Browns had lots of hype entering last season but lost their final three games to finish 6-10.

Nick Chubb led the NFL in rushing until the season’s final week. Chubb has a chance to be even better with new coach Kevin Stefanski’s emphasis on a power run game. The Browns have added tight end Austin Hooper, fullback Andy Janovich and two new starting tackles, Jack Conklin and rookie Jedrick Wills Jr. On the other side of the ball, Myles Garrett has been fully reinstated and could chase the league’s sack title. The Browns are remaking their linebacking corps and safety group, and they’ll be counting on Garrett and Sheldon Richardson to help a talented defensive line make game-changing plays.

He's a top 5 pass rusher, does monster work setting a hard edge, crashing from the backside and blowing up mesh points. Kid was well on his way to smashing franchise records and contending for a sack title before the Rudolph incident.
.. and how they're structuring it here with the bonus, its basically giving him a pile of cash they wouldn't otherwise spend.. or didn't spend in the past depending how you want to look at carryover.
