Cleveland Indians (2013 Season)

It's cool that you got to witness a lot of their "golden era." They had some teams back then. The 90's were a ton of fun, but don't quite measure up.
Yup, it was a different time and they played an entirely different different type of baseball. Really miss those times when you can keep track of which players were on what teams and money did not rule everything. Games were much shorter which was also nicer.

Back for a sec on the Chief Wahoo topic, I just finished a survey from the Indians. A whole page was devoted to questions about the Chief, including how important you felt he was to the identity of the team and to Cleveland. Similar questions were asked about the block C and the script "Indians" logos.

I’m guessing you wouldn’t wear a “New York Jews” or “San Francisco Chinamen” cap

While most commenters on my anti-Chief Wahoo posts forcefully assert that “no one cares” about racially offensive logos like the one used by the Indians, The National Congress of American Indians (and many other Native American individuals and groups) does. To help raise awareness of how offensive Chief Wahoo is, the NCAI has created a poster to put the matter into pretty sharp relief:

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that it's "racially offensive". I can accept it might be something that needs to change going forward - particularly the logo - but it's not like the "Redskins".
As ethnically Irish, I don't take offense to Notre Dame's logo.

At the same time I grew up with the Indians - loved baseball as a kid; can't really be arsed watching it now. It's managed to be more boring than European football.
Somehow I can't imagine the franchise with another logo. What does it change to? Cleveland Interior Designers ? Insomniacs ? Inconsolable?

Ubaldo tidbit:

07:31 AM ET 10.25 | While the World Series rolls out of Boston and heads for St. Louis, baseball matters haven't ceased in North America. [The] business of the game never stops, which brings us to Ubaldo Jimenez and the Indians. The situation about to unfold follows a fairly logical path. The Indians will pick up his $8 million club option for 2014 after the completion of the World Series. After the way he pitched in the second half, especially in September, the decision was made for them. Jimenez and his agents will decline the option. ... There is no chance that the Indians offer Jimenez a multiyear deal. All thoughts of that were washed away when the Giants signed Tim Lincecum earlier this week to a two-year, $35 million deal. Jimenez and Lincecum, each 29, would have entered this winter's free agent class together.

So, it looks like he'll likely hit the FA market. Kudos to Shapironetti if they refuse to bite on a large, multi-year deal on a guy that was largely awful in his 2+ years here. He was spectacular over the last two months, there's no denying that. But, given his tenure here as a whole, and his rep as something of a headcase, giving him a big extension is too big of a risk. Somebody will give him a ridiculous 3+ year deal, and odds are he'll go back to the .500, 4.50+ ERA pitcher he was for most of the previous 3 seasons.

As an aside, the Giants are INSANE giving Lincecum that much money at this point. Aside from the perfect game earlier this season, he's been the west coast version of Ubaldo since 2010. Just crazy.

Plus this will give us money to hopefully sign Kazmir who got stronger as the season progressed.

he'll get 4 years, $60 million from some dumbass team. 2.5 years from now, that team will unload him for some big league chew just so long as the other team eats the remainder of his contract.

it will be interesting to see how much of this was ubaldo finally figuring things out, and how much was micky callaway saving his career. either way, that answer will be given in a different uniform.

I color Kazmir just as gone as Ubado. Kaz is one of those rare birds who will always stir some free agent interest: a decent left handed starter. Remember, even David Huff got starts with the Yankers last season. MLB is always looking for lefties. Kaz is only 29 and has a career .521 record as a starter; Ubado's career starting record is .522. I just don't see the Tribe matching a 3 year/$40+M contract that somebody will offer Kaz.

Nor should they. Kaz had some moments last year, but he also had a lot of duds.

I love minor league baseball.

The Sky Sox in Colorado Springs actually have a really strong following and their games are a blast to go to. The stadium is walking distance from our neighborhood, so we go to several games a year.
