I don't understand why, we're not sitting here being all, "Oh noes, all the guys are free agents that we can't afford" - you don't win the division by 8 games with smoke and mirrors. You don't sweep the Red Sox with it either. Now, they 'Ryan Merrited" the Jays for one game, and that was the long game gamble by Tito just so he could have a little smoke and a little mirror for the WS. But Again, that was because some jackass had to break Carrasco's hand and maybe Salazar rushed back.... But you go from nearly 0 post season experience to everyone on the roster who comes back has 15 games worth. That's a good thing. The Cubs lost in the NLCS last year.

There are no guarantees obviously, and we could pull a Royals on the injury front. You can suck and have everyone hurt, you just don't notice it so much because losing is losing. I'm not predicting a title next year or anything like that, but, my expectations will be higher than they were to start this year. (Those being, please keep me amused till the end of August and play some meaningful games in September so these kids at least know what that's like...)

Eh i'm just cautious about being optimistic, I thought "next year was the year" after 05 and 07, expected at least a playoff showing after 13 as well, that didnt work out too well. I hope they prove me wrong but i'm not holding my breath about it. Getting back to the playoffs is the hard part.

Things do look good in the pitching department and I don't think the rest of the division is very strong (though I can see KC bouncing back) so they do have that going for them if they can avoid injuries on the mound.

As @LordJeffBuck mentioned in the 2016 Indians thread, it will be interesting to see what they do with Gomes and his contract. I just do not see any buyers for him at the price that he is making.. It probably will be a good idea to keep both Perez and Gomes in case one, or both, get hurt.

When does next year start? Cleveland Indians face Chicago Cubs Feb. 26, 2017

There's always next year – and that isn't very far away. After a nail-biting World Series, the Indians have a spring training rematch scheduled against the Chicago Cubs on Feb. 26, 2017.

If Gomes is never the same defensively to go along with awful offensive play we are stuck with a wasted roster spot, unless they bite the bullet and cut him loose at some point. I doubt right now they will find anyone willing to take him, unless he's basically given away.

Declined the 2017 option on Coco. Not sure how I feel about that.

EDIT: If they can re-sign him for less, that's a good move.

I dunno if he fits in the plans for next year (And hey, most likely you can pick him up again if you need him as a waiver for a bag of chips and a fungo)

At any rate...

Picked up the option on Santana.

Thinking about making the 17.5 mill qualifying offer on Napoli (draft choice preservation, also, since he hit all his incentives he got 10 mill last year plus the 7 mill they paid for what's his balls from Atlanta to go away that they needed to do to get rid of Brohio and Bourn, its really not a budget add if he accepts it.)

Brantley can apparently begin Baseball activities of some kind in December... hopefully the timing is such that they can get a good feel for where he is.

And I think they'll have a talk with Rajai about coming back as well.
