Zack Meisel had a great article today that broke down salary commitments for 2020. By his estimation, the Opening Day payroll, with just the existing players on the roster, should be at or around $102 million. Last year's payroll was $119.6 million. Assuming they're willing to spend to that number again, that means about $17 million with which to play in free agency.

Definitely think we could see some decent short term additions at 2B/3B (Ramirez has told the club he's willing to play either position next season) and/or the corner OF spots.

Here's Meisel's article ($) for reference - https://theathletic.com/1292272/201...-to-spend-and-if-so-how-should-they-spend-it/

Need a new co-owner and better attendance to help their bottom line.
This.

This has been one of the better teams in baseball over the last five years and they're still not drawing...

2019: 93-69, 1,738,642 (9th of 15)
2018: 91-71, 1,926,701 (9th of 15)
2017: 102-60, 2,048,138 (11th of 15) Best record in fucking baseball and finished 11th in the AL in attendance. Fuck off.
2016: 94-67, 1,591,667 (13th of 15) Went to the fucking WS and couldn't draw 20K a game.
2015: 81-80, 1,388,905 (14th of 15)

In the last five years, they've won three division titles, a pennant, averaged 92 wins a year (95 over the last four), have a likeable roster with several star players and have averaged 21,467 in attendance per game. This team hasn't finished in the top half of the league in attendance since 2002...17 years ago. Fan support sucks and the F.O. won't be allowed to really open up the checkbook and spend significantly until/unless that changes. They spent quite a bit following 2016, and while it resulted in a slight bump of butts in seats...it isn't enough.

The fucking Clowns, who have been awful for 20 years and will continue to be because that's what they're good at, still draw support. Cleveland is stupid.

I agree with all of this...except for the part about attendance being why they don’t spend money. It’s a convenient excuse for the Dolans to point to. But they make enough in TV revenue that they should be able to spend more...they just don’t.

And quite frankly, they have only themselves to blame for attendance issues anyway. Yes, 455 was a mirage born of a perfect storm of circumstances, not the least of which was that the Browns moved. But...trading back-to-back Cy Young winners (which in and of itself was enough to make people say fuck it), the hot piles of gutter trash they ran out from 2009-2012, paying Sizemore to flash his dick and not play and the corpse of Travis Hafner 5 years too long, trying to convince people that signing useless bums like David Dellucci were them trying to compete, and having the worst farm system in modern history for a time by running out double-Decker shitburgers like Martay Partay, Matt LaBusta, and Jeremy Sowers kinda turned people off. And frankly I don’t blame them. In 2 years Lindor and Ramirez will be gone, and they’ll be the Orioles.

It will be interesting to see who the Indians sign for the infield. I doubt they re-sign Kipnis because he has faded badly and he's going to be age 33 practically all of next season. Mandy Bell has said possible options would include Jonathan Schoop and Brock Holt at 2B and Mike Moustakas at 3B, all of which were significantly better players than Kipnis in terms of WAR last season. Schoop would probably be the best option of all the guys she lists in her column.

I think a big part of why they seem to be dead set against re-signing Puig is they are banking on Daniel Johnson to be a starter.

For the infield, I think the Tribe’s direction will be based on their current evaluation of Nolan Jones. Do they project him as an everyday 3B? If so, when will he be ready? If Jones is expected to play 3B in Cleveland in 2020 they’ll sign somebody like Juan Uribe, who was signed when Jose Ramirez was breaking at in 3B in 2016.
