It won't be a total F up because they nail it in trades.

Unfortunately they'll get more starting pitching and we'll just Groundhog day it for another decade
Starting pitching that will dominate for 5 2/3 innings until Tito pulls them every game to indulge his hoarder-like obsession with 500 relievers with a combined ERA of 5.50

Another depressing fact - Cesar Hernandez played very well this year, and in the playoffs, wants to remain in Cleveland and yet I think there is very, very little chance Dolan's pony up to resign him. The idea of having Lindor's and Santana's contracts leave the infield and replace with Chang and Jones probably creates wetness below the belt for him.

The depressing fact is that we will be lucky if covid doesn't destroy baseball as we know it.

I got scolded for saying this before (in a different way) but these next two off-seasons are gonna be fucked up. There is no guarantee we start next year with butts in seats, or at least full capacity butts. This is going to do deep harm to all but the biggest markets, and even they have big contracts to cover.

Indians waive Brad Hand...
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/indians-brad-hand-closer-waivers.html

Interesting decision to waive him. I would've figured they could have gotten something for him.
Cheap-ass Dolan strikes again. I am no fan of Brad Hand, but he was better than some of the other relievers on the team, and I doubt the Indians are going to try and sign a good reliever in his place.

Dolan acts like he is going bankrupt due to owning the Indians. Of course, Dolan isn't to be trusted, just another extraordinarily wealthy man trying to plead poverty in order to have a convenient excuse to make more money. Dolan is a terrible liar and con artist.

IF somebody claims Hand, which seems likely, the Indians save the $1M buyout Hand is owed if (when) the Indians don’t pick up his $10M option for 2021. If nobody claims Hand they’re stuck paying the $1M buyout and Hand is a free agent.

The Tribe obviously felt whatever Hand would bring in a trade was not worth $1M. Seems reasonable to believe that they’ve been shopping him for several weeks and didn’t like the market.

My prediction: Indians’ clearance sale has started. They’ll take the team payroll to Pirate level and it will stay there until COVID and the new CBA are finished. One year? 2 years? The rebuild will be slow and painful.

Yeah, I mean, this is what's going on. Clevinger was the start of it, and we see here that a million dollars matters to them.

I mean, I'm guessing they will go Yu Chang at 2B, Nolan Jones OF, Bobby Bradley at 1B... and find out if they can play. Obviously we will see what they get back from Lindor but their usual MO is to get a mix of MLB ready guys and some longer term dudes. I'm assuming they think Emmanuel Clase will not get suspended again so it will kind of be him and Karinchak at the back of the pen... maybe sign a veteran SS to wait for Tyler Freeman? I dunno, there will be some super value FA's out there... they're not the only ones looking to cut costs...

Sadly, this increases the chances of seeing Adam Cimber return. Awesome.

I think that'd be great. Chang and Bradley need an extended chance to show what they can do. However, it's the Indians, so we'll hear about how Jake Bauers' swing looks really good and "best shape of life" crap. Next, some has-been will come in on a minor league deal and get the 2B gig. In the OF, somehow Bradley Zimmer will grab a spot. Jones will get a look, but not until after Zimmer and some other minor league signee gets a shot to show how they can fail.

Right on target regarding Bauer. I always thought that Jones could play third base and that Ramirez best position was second base. That means they can move Chang to SS. All Zimmer can do is cover a lot of ground in the outfield. It will be interesting to see if Bradley ever hits the ball like they think he can. I do not even know why I am talking about baseball because it might be a long time before we ever see it again. I definitely do not see Spring training beginning in February or even March.

I would guess Naquin, DeShields and Zimmer are all non-tender candidates (not all of them, I just think its time to move on with one or two). I mean, really, Luplow probably keeps his platoon job, then Naylor in left and after that, who the fuck knows? I can't see them doing Naylor in Left and Reyes in Right (if they keep asking him to work on that) I mean, that's not optimal. So, who haven't we mentioned yet who sucks in the OF? Mercado, Daniel Johnson... I have a headache... at some point they're gonna have to say enough is enough....

May be first base for Naylor. Totally agree it is time to cut some of the deadwood.

Have no fear, David Delluci and Jack Hanahan V2.0s will appear to take the playing time away from the kids. And the Dolans will spend just...enough...money on them to say “welp, we had a payroll of X and still only won 68 games, so now we’re cutting to Y”.

I predict a multi-year pullback to a virtual AAA payroll.

Indians decline options on Brad Hand, Carlos Santana, Domingo Santana

The Cleveland Indians have declined contract options on Brad Hand, first baseman Carlos Santana and outfielder Domingo Santana for next season, moves that cut $30.75 million from the team's projected 2021 payroll.

The club exercised its $5.5 million option for catcher Roberto Perez, who has been exemplary in handling one of the American League's best pitching staffs.

Hand's option was worth $10 million, Carlos Santana's was for $17.5 million and Domingo Santana's $5 million for next season. The team will pay buyouts of $1 million to Hand, $500,000 to Carlos Santana and $250,000 to Domingo Santana. All three become free agents.

The fact that no one wanted Hand at 10M for free is a big statement towards how this off-season will go. Get ready for lots of non-tenders and FAs lingering until January.

I don't think it's that - it's more that teams knew the Indians weren't going to pick up his option so why trade anything for him when you can take your chances in FA with him? I mean we know there are only a handful of teams who can even pursue Hand so there wasn't like there was a line of legit competition behind him, he will likely get a one year around or more than what he was going to get anyways is my guess.

All I know is, I have for some reason supported the Dolan's, but the time has come. If you're too cheap to be an owner, sell the team, make your hundreds and hundreds of millions, and allow a waiting group of billionaires to come in and try their luck. Let someone buy the team and allow them to be the one that changes their name, a great dangling carrot for marketing. Will Cuban go after them, will Gilbert, there would be no shortage of names even in this economy.
