Summary of Antonetti press conference this afternoon on firing of Manny Acta:

  • [Insert every manager firing cliche you ever heard (need new voice, disappointment, yada yada....) ]
  • [Insert every cliche you ever heard about "exciting young core of players for future"]
  • Tribe business as usual for next year
  • [yawn]

What's ridiculous is that management even managed to screw this up. If you wanted to get a look at how Alomar would handle this team them Acta should have been fired a month ago. Don't give a guy 6 freaking games to prove himself. How the hell did the FO fuck this up too?

Why the hell would Francona come here? Cheap owner, incompetent President/GM combo, below average talent in the majors, NOTHING in the minors, and the inability to bring in ANY (even bad) free agents. Sounds like a perfect match for a two-time World Season winner.

You may be right. But, What If Dolan really does not care whether Alomar is that successful? What If the goal is to appoint a manager who scores high popularity points with the fans so that they can keep/get the STO ratings up for another week and use that to try to maintain ad rates for next season? What If they were not getting the renewal rates for season tickets that they expected and needed something to use in their phone calls? (They moved the renewal date up nearly a month--to next week) In that case, they might be better off not giving Alomar a chance to screw it up before next season.

This move gives the Tribe the chance to rehash the same old spin they used when they fired Wedgie; they only have to flip the "slow start" problem Wedgie had for the "slow second half" problem that Acta had. They can still gab about the "exciting core group of young players" that Sandy will have the chance to work with. Antonetti already started that party line this afternoon with his press conference.

So, what you're saying is they should have kept Acta, shitcanned him at the break and hired Wedge back?

Acta gets fired and Shapiro and Antonetti still have their job...makes a lot of sense...its like telling an employee to build an atom bomb and only supplying this person with rocks, sticks, duct tape and a TI-83 calculator and then firing them when they fail....If Dolan wants to make any points with the fans, then these 2 turds we call as our front office needs to be flushed down the same toilet Acta just was...i love Sandy Alomar as a player..as a coach? can we please stop with these mediocre fucks who are the indians coaches? After Manuel its been downhill and its been on Shapiro and Dolan to fix that...open the checkbook and actually get someone who knows how to coach beyond shitty teams and the Columbus Clippers...Francora and Torre are all pipe dreams and will not happen without significant pay...so Sandy Alomar it is (possibly)...best of luck to him and the 2 monkeys he has as the GM and President and the zookeeper owner

Using your logic, the Tribe should keep Acta for the first half of the season and hire back Wedgie for the second half?

Actually, I don't believe that Acta did a horrible job. Considering what he had to work with, he got about as many wins as should have been expected.

It was a joke, I was solving the slow start/shitty second half problem.

Moving right along...

Earlier today, we informed Manny Acta he would not be returning as our manager for the 2013 season. Sandy Alomar will serve as interim manager for the balance of the season.

Sandy will manage the team for the balance of the season and will be a candidate for the position moving forward, but we intend to start the search process immediately. The rest of the coaching staff will remain intact through the end of the season.

Over the past three years, Manny has given a tremendous amount to our organization and community. He has brought a passion and energy to make us better every single day and has demonstrated an unparalleled work ethic. Unfortunately, our results on the field this season have fallen short of our expectations. We are disappointed that we were not able to win more consistently under his management, but at this point, we believe a new approach will offer us the best chance for success. A decision like the one we made today is never easy, and it is made all the more challenging when it involves a person as good as Manny. We wish Manny and his family well and are confident he will have success in the future.

Even with this disappointing season, I still believe we have a strong organization with a solid core. Shin-soo Choo, Lonnie Chisenhall, and our up-the-middle talent ? Carlos Santana, Jason Kipnis, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Michael Brantley ? give us a strong nucleus of position players. When combined with a deep bullpen, several veteran starters led by Justin Masterson, the projected return of Carlos Carrasco, and the emergence of Zach McAllister and Corey Kluber, we have many positives on which to build as we head into the offseason.

Still, we are not satisfied with how this season has unfolded and our disappointing record. Today's decision reflects that disappointment and our determination to get better as an organization. Accountability ultimately rests on me and our baseball operations department to improve our ball club, and we will work tirelessly in our efforts to do so.

Chris Antonetti

Season ticketholders received the above via email this evening. Notice that Ubaldo is not mentioned? Wonder why?

Terry Francona confirmed Friday that he has spoken with Indians general manager Chris Antonetti about the team's managerial vacancy.

Francona expects to interview for the job and some point and confirmed that his interest is genuine. "I wouldn't come in and interview if I wasn't," said Francona. Sandy Alomar, Jr. will serve as the interim manager of the Indians for the rest of the season and many see him as the favorite for the permanent gig.

Francona would be nuts to take this job...

They said on MLB Radio this afternoon that Francona was not getting any other offers and that he did not want to sit out another year. They also suggested that giving the job to Alomar for 6 games was in the nature of a lovely parting gift.

I still find it very hard to believe that the Indians will be willing to pay anything close to Francona's prior salary when he was with the Red Sox (reported to have been over $4M per year).

Even so. This franchise is in a nose dive with one of the worst front offices and owners in the league. I guess he must really want a challenge.

Or a paycheck?

There's something going on, because I can't imagine anybody with any other options looking at this job, team, farm system, front office, and ownership and saying "yeah, that looks like a good job"...unless they love a good challenge, or need the paycheck. He did play here one year (1988), maybe he likes the city...
