Cleveland Indians (official 2012 season)

Shapiro and Antonetti should thank Francona for saving their jobs. I like the hire, but I was all for a house cleaning. Not that any other President or GM is going to be much more successful with the tight purse strings of the Dolans. I think Francona will do a better job and has a lot more credibility with players and with MLB. That helps instantly IMO, but others are right, we need an upgrade at several key positions in order to compete next season or anytime in the near future.

Francona didn't have any success in Philadelphia with a roster that was probably a lot better than this one. I think Francona is a good manager for a good roster, but we need a Glen Mason clone for this roster, and I don't think Francona is it. I hope he does well, and I like the guy, but I don't know that he's a good fit here right now.

Center fielder Michael Brantley on Thursday underwent surgery for a sports hernia on the left side of his abdominal wall. Dr. William Meyers performed the operation in Philadelphia.
Brantley, coming off his best season in the big leagues, will need three to six weeks to recover. He'll begin physical therapy next week at his home in Florida and should be ready to start his off-season conditioning program in late November.
Dr. Meyers performed similar surgeries on Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore.
Brantley strained his left groin on Sept. 23 in a rundown between first and second against Kansas City, but that wasn't the primary reason for the surgery. He'd been experiencing pain in that are the entire second half.

Meanwhile, back at the wigwam there was some news of very little conseqence:

Dan Wheeler, Shelley Duncan and Luke Carlin, who spent time with the Indians this year, have opted for free agency.

Francona should have held out for the soon-to-be-vacant Reds job. That would have been the fit for all parties involved.

Agree there. Anybody thinking this shitshow of a roster was just a manager away from being competitive is fooling themselves. They're a shoe-in to lose 90+ again next year. Hell, they'll make a run at 100 if they deal Choo and Perez, IMO.

I refuse to start a new thread for this team and especially this one player.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Indians first baseman Matt LaPorta had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Wednesday. He's expected to need three to four months to recover, but should be ready when the Indians open the exhibition season in late February.
Dr. Thomas Byrd performed the surgery in Nashville, Tenn. He performed a debridement of LaPorta's left hip joint. At the end of the 2009 season, LaPorta had the same surgery on the same hip.
More Indians stink
