Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

If I were a defensive coordinator, primarily in charge of the secondary, and I had a recruiting class with Holmes, Okudah, Wade, Riep, Williamson, and Pryor ...... and I got Young, Wilson, and Tufele, on top of Cage and Garret, and I got Browning and Werner ........ I would be sticking around two more years to watch the devastation it would wreck.

The "silver bullets" nickname might have to give way to the "silver h-bombs" or something.

The NCAA might have to pass the "Schiano rule" or something.

Man earned his keep this year and last night. Hope Urban finds a way to keep him for a couple more years.
Did his job and did it well. With young guys no less. One reason I don't like to excuse the youth on offense. They are young, but they are talented just like the D young guys. Did I expect them to win it all with all of the youth, nope. Did I expect them to look like they had seen a football before last night on the offensive side of the ball and be competitive, YES. That was just beyond embarrassing considering 4 teams hung 30+ on that Defense from Clemson.

Venabals owed Warriner and Beck. End of story.

To Do List: Buckeye Safeties Coach Greg Schiano

GregSchianoWide.jpg

Replacing Malik Hooker is one of those things that might sound possible because, you know, all things are possible, but this one still seems like quite a stretch.

Of course, that's just one of the many things that safeties coach and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano has to take care of in preparation for the 2017 season. What else is on his list? We have some guesses.

1. Find a reasonable facsimile of Malik Hooker.

Yeah, this sounds like a long shot, but there is no doubt they'll be looking for somebody to step right in for one of Ohio State's best safeties ever. It might be asking a lot, but even if they only get to the warning track on this one, then that would still be pretty good. Is Hooker's reasonable facsimile Erick Smith? He's certainly due for his opportunity. Is it Jordan Fuller? He's got the athleticism. Even if they can't find someone similar, if they can at least get consistent play that can solidify the back end of the defense, that's a win. Replacing a pair of cornerbacks, however, makes this search a little more important than in years past. Plus, Urban Meyer hates it when an area on his team takes a step backward. Greg Schiano probably doesn't care for it much either.

2. Continue Damon Webb's steady rise.

You may still be judging Damon Webb's junior season based on the first half of the year where he certainly had some struggles in coverage, but he got better as the year went on -- or at least less noticeable. Remember, a year ago at this time he was still a cornerback, so these things take some time. Now that he is comfortable and has the hang of everything, it's time to put the finishing touches into the mix. Webb needs to go from solid starter to All-B1G this season. This is his final season in Columbus, which means that it should be his best. That's certainly Greg Schiano's goal.

Just wondering how long he stays here....

Re: Schiano’s already had a few opportunities to become a head coach. He’s in no rush. His twins, Matt and John, are promising football players who will be seniors this fall. He didn’t want to move the family again and have the boys go to a third high school in three years.

“My wife told me I remember the happiest you were was when you were the defensive coordinator coaching your kids at Miami,” he said.

Old article but FWIW his kids play at the Columbus Academy....

Re: Their sister, Katie, plays soccer and is an eighth-grader at Academy.

Let's hope he sticks around (at least) until Katie graduates from HS.....:slappy:

Food for thought......

When will Ohio State football enter the world of the $1 million assistant coach?
February 06, 2017

As a total staff, Ohio State paid just over $4.5 million to its assistant coaches in 2016, which was the seventh-highest total in the country according to USA Today's database. They're keeping up with the rest of the country there, but they weren't one of the 10 programs with at least one assistant coach who made $1 million or more last year.
.
.
.
Michigan didn't have any million-dollar assistants last year either, and now the Wolverines have three. They'll pay assistant head coach Pep Hamilton, offensive coordinator Tim Drevno and defensive coordinator Don Brown at least $1 million next season. Michigan is the first program to have three assistants make seven figures.
.
.
.
"It's gonna happen here one day," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told cleveland.com. "We're gonna do our best to make sure we compensate people based on market performance. Our market in the Big Ten has been pretty stable. This will change it. When will it have it's effect? I can't project. But it will eventually."
