Drafting Days Over, Jeff Hafley Excited to Recruit Again

Jeff-Hafley.jpg

Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.

So said Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, and so may Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley also be saying now that he is once again on the college football recruiting trail.

Hafley has spent the last seven years in the NFL. As far removed from recruiting high schoolers as a football coach can get.

Before that, he spent 11 years in college, including five years at Pitt and one year at Rutgers.

Sometimes when a college coach leaves for the NFL it is because they don’t want to recruit anymore. The travel gets to them. The salesmanship may not be up their alley. It also takes them away from film study and, y’know, coaching.

It takes a certain kind of coach to handle the rigors and commitment of recruiting, which is why it is always a question mark when a coach comes from the NFL to a new college job.

How does a head coach know he is bringing in an outstanding recruiter if they haven’t had to do it in almost a decade?

It is an entirely different world, which is one of the reasons why Hafley wanted to come back to it.

Now, instead of having input on one or two draft picks in the NFL, he can set his sights on a number of different players and it is then up to him to go get them. Hafley has much more control now and he plans to make good use of it.

“I think [Ryan Day] expects me to go out and get the best players,” Hafley said on signing day. “That’s what I expect out of myself. When I was at Pitt, I did it for a long time. I recruited some really good players. Getting on the road, yeah, getting on airplanes and traveling, I had to get used to doing that again. I got a little tired going from city to city, but that’s exciting because we don’t have to draft them now, we get to go pick them, so I get more than one pick.

“Coach tells me you get two DB’s in this draft. I get more than two DB’s now. We get to go evaluate, we get to go pick them, and if we want them, we’d better work and get them, and that fires me up to give us a chance to do it. And I believe I have the experience with what I’ve learned over the last seven years to give a lot to offer these guys.”

He didn’t yell at everyone making noise during a football practice in an indoor facility. So he’s got that going for him. Right, Coach Orgeron?

Edit: In Coach O’s defense, there were less people in his practice facility and the noise was coming from something like 40 yards away so it was a lot tougher on him.

OK, we got a chicken-and-egg thing going.....for him to gather in the best CBs, he's gotta have tOSU current cluster of CBs do well. But before he can gather them in, he's gotta put forth his spiel to his targets. Then he has to get the current cluster of CBs back on the track that Coombs had them on. Kinda elementary, like turning your head back to the ball....From what we've heard from some former tOSU DBs, Hafley has done it on the pro level successfully, and apparently he did it at a major college level (aka Pitt), so he's got the experience, and the rep. Never mind, I believe I confused myself. Suffice to say, he's got some great 'clay' in Okudah, Wade, and Tyreke to mold. They are already in the pipeline. So, to conclude this rant, the table is set for Hafley to succeed. (Kinda like Day as HC). Here's hoping that tOSU D plays lights out this year, and they pick off at least one pass a game, and give up fewer than that for the season. Go Bucks! PS, the interest by the DBs is still great in tOSU, so all that's gotta happen is what many posters above have already opined, Just Do It! Go Bucks!

Football: Jeff Hafley takes Ryan Day’s defensive dream to heart

IMG_0652-23pyttc-530x353.jpg

Coming into his third season, Ohio State junior cornerback Jeffrey Okudah will have his third different cornerbacks coach, working under Greg Schiano and Taver Johnson in his first and second year, respectively. As one of the older guys in the cornerback room, he said not having that level of consistency with his position coach has been “unfortunate.”

But that did not stop head coach Ryan Day from talking up the new secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, a defensive backs specialist, who has spent his past six seasons in the NFL.

“Coach Day told us, when he hired him, that he’d be one of the best coaches we have ever had,” Okudah said. “So far, it seems like it’s been the case.”

In his first spring with the Buckeyes, Hafley has taken to heart the goals Day set for the defense in his introductory press conference: creating a high-energy, yet simple defense.

With that in mind, Hafley combined the cornerbacks and safeties into one cohesive room, a room that would speak the same language, and one that would more effectively communicate and understand what is going on in the pass defense.

Instead of mastering one single position, Hafley aims for his players to understand the bigger picture.

“I want to teach these guys how to play the game,” Hafley said. “I don’t want them to just be pigeonholed into one position. I want them to play football and learn different positions because I think it will help us and I think it will help them in the future.”

This is something Hafley has been integrating with Matt Barnes, the assistant secondary coach, neither of whom focuses on a single position.

“From one individual period to the next, I have the corners, then I have the safeties, and I’m back with the corners,” Barnes said. “We are just bouncing around, it’s really by drill how we want to set it up.”

So far, Hafley said this is something that his position group has bought into. He said the focus during the spring has primarily been on technique, learning the basics of the positions to create a fast yet sound secondary once fall comes.

Hafley feels as though the training and the drills now, even if defensive scheme is not the major part of it, help define the ceiling of his position group later.

“Spring is about creating a culture, playing with a great energy, and getting better at fundamentals and technique, which ultimately will win and lose you games,” Hafley said.

SKULL SESSION: JEFF HAFLEY AND BRIAN HARTLINE ARE TOP RECRUITERS, GUNNAR HOAK PREPS BY HIMSELF, AND THE SHEA PATTERSON TWEET WAS FAKE

BEST DAMN RECRUITERS IN THE LAND
. It looks like Ohio State's recruiting will be just fine under the new regime.

Brad Crawford of 247 Sports ranked the top-10 recruiters in college football for the 2020 class, and two different Buckeye assistants made the list – one on each side of the ball.

2. JEFF HAFLEY, CO-DC, OHIO STATE

Number of commits: 5

Avg. rating: 93.62

The skinny: The Buckeyes' strongest recruiter this cycle under first-year coach Ryan Day, Hafley is helping Ohio State solidify several positions of need with top-end talent. Cornerback Clark Phillips III (La Habra, Ca.) is the fourth-best player at his position nationally while three other Composite four-stars — Luke Wypler (Center), Cody Simon (OLB) and Lejond Cavazos (S) — each have early-impact potential in Columbus. The fifth commit under Hafley, three-star athlete Cameron Martinez, was pulled out of Michigan. As Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator, he'll be under the spotlight on gamedays this fall after the Buckeyes' disappointing campaign on that side of the football in 2018.

My first takeaway is that this is hilariously low for the guy who's hauling in the best wide receiver class I've ever seen. I'm not saying he should be No. 1, but he's currently behind a Notre Dame tight ends coach and another receivers coach at Texas A&M and uh, my glasses may be scarlet-tinted but I know who I'm picking there.

Second, remember when folks were worried about landing defensive prospects? I honestly didn't expect to see Hafley on this list, but given how the past few weeks have gone (and that I would personally sign up to play football for him after hearing him speak at a podium once) it makes sense. The dude hasn't even coached a game yet and my brain is already working out ways to keep him in Columbus longer than like, two years.

Have to admit I was a little skeptical about his hiring but he has been very impressive whenever he speaks and on the recruiting trail. He was obviously key in reeling Phillips and Ransom into the boat. My apologies to the Hafley family, which I know they appreciate.

Still think we could have done better for the other DC job/ main play caller than tun's 70 year old d-line coach though.
