In a surprising development, OSU TEs coach/recruiting coordinator Bill Conley announced his resignation today.

In a bit of a stunning move (and one that many fans may wish is an April Fool's joke but isn't), <!--Default NodeId For Ohio State is 412,2003-->Ohio State recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach <!--Default NodeId For Bill Conley is 1192401,2004-->Bill Conley resigned today after 17 years of coaching at <!--Default For Ohio is to ignore-->Ohio State.

"This is the most difficult decision I have ever made in my professional career," Conley stated in a release. "But after 17 years as a coach and recruiting coordinator here at Ohio State, I feel it is time for me to step down and explore other options.

Conley is said to be pursuing options outside of football. He has had a long history with Ohio State.

"I have had the distinct pleasure of coaching under three outstanding head coaches in Earle Bruce, <!--Default For John Cooper is to ignore-->John Cooper and <!--Default For Jim Tressel is to ignore-->Jim Tressel, and I want to thank them for giving me the opportunity of coaching at the finest institution in America," he said. "I also had the privilege of playing here under coach Woody Hayes."

Conley is recognized as one of the nation's top recruiters. Stay tuned to Bucknuts.com for more on this developing story.

Ugh. That can't be good. Isn't this kind of a weird time to resign? But I guess Coach Conley's season (recruiting) did just end. Wonder who'll take up as recruiting coordinator. Fickell had some real success this past recruiting season.

ysubuck: This is probably the best time to resign, since the end of recruiting season is not even 2 months past and recruiting for the upcoming season isn't near full stride yet. If he had resigned immediately after recruiting season, many of the kids he had just recruited may have felt betrayed. Had he waited longer to resign, it would be closer to the recruiting season and would've hurt us worse. Resigning now also gives his replacement(s) plenty of time to get up to speed.

no joke- Conley was interviewed on local news in C-bus. He was pretty emotional saying that no matter what he does he will always be a Buckeye.

another positive about him leaving this year is that this will be a small recruiting class and it appears we already have plenty of candidates for those spots. My bet is that Fickell takes a bigger role in recruiting.

Best of luck to BC!

the pessimist in me says please dont let this be related to any inappropriate recruiting on his part.......i seriously doubt that is the case....i hope hes just burnt out...but i get worried nonetheless.....

I don't want to imply anything negative about Conley - he has a great rep and has brought in a lot of great kids. But 99% of what brings kids to OSU is still in place.

The timing of this is certainly interesting. It does not say he is leaving to pursue a specific opportunity or to immediately commence another opportunity, but to 'pursue' other opportunities. That kind of move is something you think about for a while and execute when you are ready - not drop a bomb on the first day of Spring Practice. Why on earth would you do this and become a 'volunteer' coaching for free rather than quit after spring practice ends in one month and get paid for it?

Let me also be the first to suggest that Bill Kurelic's recruiting 'expertise' just took a serious hit.
