Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

If true, this is a bigger loss than any of the other coaches who left this year. He was arguably one of the top 3 recruiting coordinators in the country and he had good relationships with folks in FLA.

Well there goes the last holdover from the Cooper staff.

All are officially gone now.

Personally I wonder if this was somehow planned that these coaches would move on in two to 3 years time.

Once again I just think this seems suspect, based on the timing.

Not a chance. Conley was here under Bruce as well, and Conley wouldn't drop this bomb the first day of spring practice if it was something orchestrated in advance.

This could have a much bigger impact on our recruiting than I would like. Conley was GREAT at his job, and was our biggest (if not only) recruiter in several big states (FLA for one). I'm hoping someone else can step in and fill his shoes, but I'm a pessimist by nature...

My guess is that Conley got tired of the job. I don't see it as anything more than that. His contract was up and he was ready to try something new. Even if there was something this past recruiting season that ticked him off I doubt it was anything more than the straw that yada yada yada. Tress knew he was thinking of leaving so this is not out of the blue and I'm sure he has made some plans. Conley will be tough to replace though. He did a great job for us for a long time. He deserves major kudos.

If true ...
Thank You,
Thank You,
Thank You,
Coach Conley!

I'm proud to call you a Buckeye and we as a community will never be able to thank you for the hard work an effort you've put in to making OSU the Best! Good luck in your future endeavors.

Conley resigns as Ohio St. recruiting coordinator
Posted: Thursday April 1, 2004 9:01PM; Updated: Thursday April 1, 2004 9:01PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach Bill Conley surprised many on Thursday when he announced he was resigning immediately to pursue other career opportunities.

"At first I thought it was a bad April Fool's joke," tight end Ryan Hamby said. "I thought I was going to be 40 years old and he'd still be around here."

Conley has spent the last 17 years in charge of Ohio State's recruiting. He has been credited with bringing in dozens of players who were All-Big Ten, All-American or went on to the NFL.

Conley will remain with the staff as a volunteer through the end of spring practice. The Buckeyes began spring workouts on Thursday.

Coach Jim Tressel said he found out about Conley's sudden decision on Wednesday. Asked if there was a rift between he and Conley, he said, "Heavens no!"

"We're going to miss him like crazy," Tressel added.

Conley told the players about his decision after they completed their first workout.

"This is the greatest experience I've ever had," Conley later told reporters, referring to his years as a coach. "The toughest part of this is leaving the players."

The 53-year-old Conley, a former walk-on football player at Ohio State under Woody Hayes, said he had made no decisions on what he would do next. Asked if it might be a job out of football coaching, he said, "Possibly."

"In life, certain times you make changes," he said. "There are times when you feel it's right to do something. I thought this was the right time."

Conley won two letters as an offensive guard at Ohio State before graduating in 1972. He was a successful high school coach with stops at London, Groveport and Middletown before joining Earle Bruce's staff as linebackers coach in 1984.

He left following the 1987 season when Bruce was fired, becoming the head coach at Dublin Coffman High School, then returned to Ohio State in 1991 as recruiting coordinator under John Cooper. He also coached defensive ends until 1997, when he took over responsibility for tight ends.

"It's something he's been working on and wrestling with for a few weeks," Tressel said. "Sometimes you reach a point where there are certain options available to you and you have to decide if you take them or press on. It's tough on us because he's outstanding at what he does. And he bleeds scarlet and gray and he loves the kids."

Tressel said he would not hire a replacement until later in the spring.

Coach Conley is a very good friend of mine. I talked to him last night. There have been some problems between him and Coach T. for a while. It came to a head on Monday. Coach Conley felt it was time to leave. He will be missed here is South Florida.

BTW, he had NOTHING to do with Dujuan Morgan except for the fact that he stayed with the kid after the accident, and still wanted him to be a Buckeye. It was Coach T's call to revoke the offer.

My thoughts exactly! I think with the hoop-la of the internet and recruits acting and feeling like they are a prized piece of meat, recruiting had to have gotten a lot more frustrating! I'm sure the pressure was starting to get extreme and he just plain got tired of it!

All I know is, the heat is on Tress. This will be the most important hire of his career. USC, LSU, Miami, etc. have all hired young, aggressive recruiters & have been closing the gap between us and them in this area the last few years. We gotta get a proven commodity, and someone with big time connections.

Obviously, this is a HUGE blow to the program, but we can get someone else to do the job.

All I know is, if I'm the 116 other D-1 schools right now, I've got Conley on my speed dial and my check book out.

Literally the first thing I did when I heard that Coop had been fired, was call a friend of mine who had a clue (at least more of a clue than I do), and asked if Conley would be staying. The answer I got was, "he hopes to". When JT was hired, I held my breath and asked the same question. The answer I got was "he plans to". The point of all of this is simply that I see/saw Conley as the most important 'assistant' by far. No exceptions.

His loss is huge. We need someone with national ties and connections, with Florida being an absolute. I honestly believe Conley is the best recruiting coordinator in the country. I will be shocked if he doesn't land with another program. I'd rather it not be someone I personally don't think much of (like Tennessee), but wherever he goes, including to the private sector, I wish him luck. He's done some amazing things here at OSU, and his presence and recruiting touch will be missed.

Anyway, I agree with Sloopy. This is a critical hire for Tress. Particularly in light of the fact that he's (edit: may be part of) [strike]at least part of[/strike] the reason Bill C. is moving on.

In the end, we're Ohio State. Not Wisconsin, NC State, or Washington (all good programs, but don't draw nation wide on name alone). By that I mean that nationally, the name and history alone does a pretty good job of selling the cow. That doesn't hurt. I don't know if we can get someone as gifted as Conley, but maybe we can find someone with a wider scope. Florida, California, hell - I'd like to raid Texas some more as well.

I'd be happy to see Fickell become recruiting coordinator. Hire somebody with a good offensive midnset and preferably some nice recruiting connections to coach the TE's. Hell, let's demote Bollman to TE's coach (where he used to coach) and hire a competent OL coach.
