Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

I'd be happy to see Fickell become recruiting coordinator. Hire somebody with a good offensive midnset and preferably some nice recruiting connections to coach the TE's. Hell, let's demote Bollman to TE's coach (where he used to coach) and hire a competent OL coach.

I'd be perfectly happy with all of those scenarios.

Coach Conley is a very good friend of mine. I talked to him last night. There have been some problems between him and Coach T. for a while. It came to a head on Monday. Coach Conley felt it was time to leave. He will be missed here is South Florida.

BTW, he had NOTHING to do with Dujaan Morgan except for the fact that he stayed with the kid after the accident, and still wanted him to be a Buckeye. It was Coach T's call to revoke the offer.

Very interesting. I heard some things a few weeks ago from a non-Buckeye fan who has a connection (relative of a very reliable starter) inside the program regarding the coaching staff that I refused to acknowledge, just thinking he was trying to get under my skin, as he's a SEC guy. He said there were some problems among the coaching staff during bowl preparation but wouldn't tell me between which coaches, however, I doubt he knows since he doesn't really follow the team.

I'm sure helpinghand won't want to share any knowledge but any hints would be nice. :)

C: "I will be shocked if he doesn't land with another program."

Ditto. This has gotta be something to do with him and Tressel not getting along. Nobody goes from Recruting Coordinator at Ohio State to the Private Sector. Not even a small chance. Jennifer Aniston's husband would be more inclined to give her up for Roseanne Barr than anyone in their right mind would be to give up that job for a normal one.

Another red flag is that this offseason, we lost the two best coaches and holdovers from the Cooper regime: Spencer & Conley. Obviously, there must be some power struggle with Tress, because those two bleed Buckeye scarlet & have been with the program forever. I never pictured them leaving under any circumstances.

I'd look all over for the replacement, and not just within the program. Look how good Pete Carroll did hiring Norm Chow from outside of USC: they're gobbling up all the Offensive talent in the Nation. There must be another Norm Chow out there. We're in deep you-know-what if this isn't a great hire.

I can see how you might think that Conley's leaving could be some kind of problem with Cooper's assistants, but most people consider going from RB coach at OSU to RB coach for the Chicago Bears to be a career upgrade.

After reading as much as I could find on Conley's "resignation," I don't think there is any real mystery what happened here. Tressel simply did not renew his contract. That is, it was Tressel's decision, not Conley's. Contracts run from April 1 thru March 31, so on April 1 Conley was no longer under contract--that explains the April Fool's Day announcement. But one does not resign a position like his in order to "explore options." If this was Conley's decision, he would have announced his acceptance of a new position along with the "resignation."

So, if there is no mystery as to what happened, there certainly remains a big mystery as to why it happened. How did Tressel and Conley get cross-wise with each other? Anything related to the Morgan/Williams issues? Could it be Tressel's micro-management of recruiting whereas Conley thinks he's already demonstrated sufficient competence to be left alone. Maybe it's nothing more than two highly organized individuals (we might say "anal") who are organized differently, thereby causing friction.

We may never really know. These guys all play it close to the (sweater)vest, and they are certainly not going to start calling each other names.

Oh8ch: "How many on this board - if their bosses did not renew their contracts - would agree to work an additional month on a volunteer basis?"

If my boss were The Ohio State University, then the answer is 'yes.' Just about anyone else, 'no!'

My first thought was did the offer to Maurice Wells (who rumor said conley offered without talking to tressel, when normally all offers come from tress) have anything to do with it?

Tough to say how that will impact our recruiting this year. I do wish the best for Conley. He was very good at what he did.

Can you blame Spencer for heading to the NFL? Not many assistant coaches would turn down the NFL for a college job. I wouldn't read too much into Spencer leaving.

I think Jay Minton from Huber Heights Wayne might be a good candidate. He's a very pro-OSU guy, very respected among the Ohio HS coaches, has produced numerous D-I players, and on top of that has strong connections to South Florida, where he coached the Bellisari's in high school. Conley came to OSU straight from the high school ranks at Coffman I believe. That worked out pretty well.

Clarity,

It's kinda funny that you mentioned Tennessee as a place you didn't want BC to end up considering that they made a serious run at him a few years ago(as I'm sure your aware). I would imagine that they would be VERY interested in him.

Expanding on what helpinghand wrote, from what I've heard from people "in the know", JT has a reputation as being somewhat of a control freak. He seems to control all aspects pertaining to the team, when sometimes he should just trust his asst. coaches. Some examples of this are his reluctance to let anyone else run the offense(playcalling, game planning, subs, etc..), Dave Kennedy and the strength program, and now Bill Conley and recruiting. DK and BC were both considered top 5 if not top 3 in their position in college football when they resigned. I would like to see JT have a little more faith in his assts. and what their doing, and trust their judgements a little more. JMO

from today's Dispatch

Former OSU recruiting coordinator set to take job with upstart sports firm

The Dispatch has learned that Bill Conley, who resigned last week as Ohio State’s football recruiting coordinator, today is expected to be named vice president of MAX Sports, an athletic training, medicine and rehabilitation center under development in Dublin.

Former Ohio State chief team physician Dr. John Lombardo is among those involved in the project.

Last night, Conley would only confirm an announcement today concerning his future. He surprised many when he opted to leave OSU after a 17-year run as an assistant coach, the last 13 of which he served as recruiting coordinator.

He said at the time he wanted to try something a little different but still be associated with athletics.

He has agreed to stay with the Buckeyes through the spring game on April 24.

Yeah Bill has been good friends with Dr. Lombardo for some time now and were working together at The Ohio State for quite a few years so it doesn't seem that surprising that they were both kind of looking for a change. I believe that they are also going into business with former Strength and Conditioning coach from Upper Arlington High School Will Connery. I wish all these people the best of luck on their new endeavors.
